This introductory tutorial discusses the basic ideas and techniques used to obtain such random variates. The two main points addressed are how appropriate distributions should be selected to model different quantities like arrival and service times, and how the variate values should actually be generated from the selected distributions.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130528249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It supports an evolutionary design approach for complex, distributed systems such that an initial simulation model of the proposed design is iteratively refined and elaborated into an implemented system. It also supports hybrid simulation of physical modules and simulation models to facilitate rapid prototyping of complex, distributed systems. The paper describes the use of parallel hybrid models in system design, and discusses their execution issues including cyclic dependency, event causality, and real-time constraints.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130643699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This gives it a claim to be universal for formalisms describing Discrete Event Dynamic Systems (DEDS). This gives that any other formalism such as Petri nets, which have become very popular for DEDS control can be embedded in it. Moreover, DEVS extends to the continuous case thus facilitating combined discrete/continuous modelling. The universality of DEVS is significant because it has been implemented in a variety of simulation environments, as extensions of diverse underlying Object-Oriented languages such as CLOS and C++. This gives it not only the power of formal rigor but also the practical capability of application to real world complex systems. The DEVS formalism has associated with it a characteristic abstract simulation engine architecture that can be realized in diverse sequential and parallel/distributed platforms. It is especially suitable for the simulation study of complex technical and natural systems with intelligent components and for long term model development capability acquired through systematic reusability. This tutorial will present the basic concepts of the DEVS formalism and its associated simulation methodology. These concepts will be illustrated in the context of large scale ecosystems modelling.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127903101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

John Carson, Kenneth Musselman, and Onur Ulgen are consultants, while Jerry Fox/Stephen Halladin are major users of simulation at a company that very extensively employs this technology. The questions discussed in this article were chosen by the discussants and myself based on our collective years of simulation modeling experience as being both important and of general interest. One of the questions-- how to determine the level of model detail--is, perhaps, the single most difficult methodological issue confronting an analyst trying to model a large, complex system. If there is not enough detail in the model, then it will probably be invalid and produce erroneous results. On the other hand, an overly detailed model may result in missed deadlines and in excessive computer execution time or memory requirements. Two additional questions address the ingredients for overall project success and how to collect good information/data on the system of interest. Finally, the discussants give their views on where the field of simulation modeling is headed in the next three years.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125494417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this system is to support training effectiveness research involving combat skills. Currently, this simulation system provides the laboratory with most of the air combat simulation capabilities found in more expensive full mission simulators. This paper describes the training needs that lead to the development of this system and summaries the results of two operational training utility evaluations. The first of these evaluations used engineering research simulators at McDonnell Aircraft while the second used the laboratory's local area, distributed simulation network. Participants in both evaluations were mission ready pilots and air weapons controllers. Results of both evaluations show that pilots and controllers perceive similar training benefits in each simulation environment.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122321249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To the best of our knowledge, the few existing systems which adopt a process-view strictly use message-passing to effect process-interaction in distributed-memory settings. As a result, these systems avoid scenarios in which processes access passive but shared components. This can restrict the manner in which a system is modelled and hinder the phase of distributed model construction. In this paper, we propose an approach which utilizes mobile processes in distributed-memory simulation systems. Mobile processes can move around the system at will, with easy access to remote system components. The approach basically entails the migration of a requesting process with its timestamp to the remote site hosting the requested passive object. Major advantages of this approach include one-time transmission, fixed communication topology, and increased locality of reference. Early results based on lightweight processes show that the mobile process paradigm can be as efficient as the message-passing paradigm.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126875830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is probably of special importance for small and medium size firms in engineering and construction. We conclude that such stochastic and dynamic simulation cannot be done in a spreadsheet, but that a special language of discrete-event simulation, like GPSS, is the most suitable way of doing this. We give examples of how this can affect the teaching of finance at business schools. Finally we present a very simple program that illustrates how cash flow forecasting can be done using micro-GPSS, an easy-to-learn version of GPSS.","PeriodicalId":177234,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1993 Winter Simulation Conference - (WSC '93)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133267452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
