Istanbul is one of the largest megacities, with a population of over 15 million. The large volume of water demand and increasing scarcity of clean water resources make long-term planning necessary for this city, as sustained water supply requires large-scale investment projects. Successful investment plans require accurate projections and forecasting for freshwater demand. This study considers different machine learning methods for freshwater demand forecasting for Istanbul. Using monthly consumption data provided by the municipality since 2009, we compare forecasting accuracies of ARIMA, Holt-Winters, Artificial Neural Networks, Recursive Neural Networks, Long-Short Term Memory, and Simple Recurrent Neural Network models. We find that the monthly freshwater demand of Istanbul is best predicted by Multi-Layer Perceptron and Seasonal ARIMA. From the predictive modeling perspective, this result is another indication of the combined usage of conventional forecasting models and novel machine learning techniques to achieve the highest forecasting accuracy.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132202510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Correlations among the metals and among gases were calculated. Considering all the data, the heavy metals with the highest correlation were Fe-Cu (0.93) and Mn-Zn (0.80). In order to determine whether the metal analysis results are at the level of pollution, the enrichment factor was calculated by taking the aluminum element as a reference. The elements that was seen enrichment in all stations are Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb. In addition, the ratios of the average enrichment factors to each other were calculated in order to determine the changes in the compared periods (summer-winter or months) at the stations. In the Aksaray station, where summer-winter comparison was made, the metals with the highest enrichment in winter were Pb and Ni. In order to see the effect of the quarantines applied periodically throughout the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic on the air pollution in Istanbul, the pollutant gas data shared by the IMM AQMC for 2019, 2020 and 2021 years were evaluated and seen that different situations at each station. In Kadıköy station, both the lowest CO and the highest NO and NOx (although they decreased significantly) emissions were determined in 2021.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126801043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Public transportation systems' priority transportation policies are developed by local governments to meet accessibility at the optimum level, minimize harmful environmental effects, and save time and cost. Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a planning approach adopted in many cities to reduce private vehicle use by developing public transit stations around high-density mixed land use and walkable environments. This study assesses the potential for TOD development at eleven stations of the T2 tram line on the Bursa-Istanbul road, using the 6Ds of built environment variables as indicators and GIS methods and applications to measure all spatial indicators. TOD indexes were examined for each station to identify potential improvement strategies, and each station was classified as having a high, medium, or low TOD index. By understanding the specific strategies for different TOD indices, this article aims to support development areas to improve local urban development towards higher TOD levels.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130219599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Model results were calibrated with four buoy measurements by tuning physical model parameters. Wave simulations showed a strong sensitivity to the whitecapping parameter (Cds). Calibrated MIKE 21 SW model run to validate at two buoy measurements. Considering the statistical error measures: (i) ERA-I predicted lower significant wave heights and wave periods than ERA5 and CFSR, (ii) statistical error measures (bias, RMSE, and SI) obtained with CFSR were calculated slightly higher than those obtained using ERA5 (iii) ERA5 performed slightly better in the hindcast of Eastern Mediterranean wave properties than ERA-I. As a result of all evaluations, the highest correlation coefficient (R), relatively low statistical error measures, and slightly better accuracy were provided by the model settings forced with ERA5 wind fields.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127108970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, the maritime sector, which provides the transfer of 90% of global trade, has become the center of attention with its ships boasting huge machinery and has also been a subject of exhaust emission studies. The fact that approximately 70% of ship emissions occur in coastal areas requires more scrutiny of ships operating in these areas. Providing docking and departing services for ports, having small hull sizes compared to other ships but featuring big machinery in terms of power output (kW), port tugboats are a serious source of emissions. As a first in this literature, the present study aimed to make a 3-month emission inventory of port tugs in Izmit Bay, where Turkey’s largest shipping activities take place, and to compare it with emission studies for other ships. In the study period, port tugs’ emissions of CO2, NOX, SOX, VOC, PM, CO were calculated to be 7,398.88 tonnes, 121.09 tonnes, 66.43 tonnes, 2.13 tonnes, 4.27 tonnes, and 5.77 tonnes, respectively. This suggests that port tugs have a significant place among ship types in terms of producing exhaust emissions.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132319772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Golden Horn Estuary’s water was used as a system water. The test system was operated continuously for 504 h and natural biofilm formation was ensured. The physicochemical properties of system water were measured each sampling time. Bacterial attachment was observed on all plastic surfaces even within the first hours. Also, macroscopic images proved that the biofilm layer formed and flourished on all plastic surfaces over time. After 504 h, the levels of AHB on the plastic coupons were detected as 1.4×105, 1.2×105 and 1.8×105 cells cm−2 for PE, PP and PS, respectively. To investigate the number of bacterial cells in early-stage of biofilm formation on plastic surfaces will create an important basis for future research in terms of evaluating the effects of microplastics on the environment and human health.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"471 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125096626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key moment in the history of mankind has been urbanization, and there is no doubt that the world is rapidly urbanizing, which is causing temperature changes. The relationship between climate change and rapid urbanization in Nguru Local Government Area, Yobe State, Nigeria, is investigated in this paper. The study used remote sensing data to reveal the extent of urban microclimate change trends over the next two decades (2001–2021). Thus, the microclimate temperature increased by nearly +5.32 °C in 2021 (39.39°C) compared to 34.07°C in 2001. Furthermore, the minimum temperature in 2001 was 22.33 °C, while that of 2021 was 23.36 ℃. The built-up area increased by 556.73%, from 446 hectares in 2001 to 2,483 hectares in 2021. Accelerated urbanization and the city's blue and green facilities, which are not preserved or safeguarded due to a poor planning system, are to blame for these modifications to the urban climate and design. The study aimed to determine the relationship between urbanization and urban heat islands in Nguru local government area, Yobe State, Nigeria. The picture of the situation in Nguru sheds light on the enormous challenges that cities in developing countries encounter in dealing with local and global climate change-related risks. Indeed, this situation necessitates an integrated strategy to address climate change both within and outside of cities. Policymakers must increase spending on urban planning, fund, adaptation of approaches through urban planning, and strengthen urban planning institutions.","PeriodicalId":176110,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Environment and Geoinformatics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123976782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
