Its failings in the real world became obvious to all\u0000following the global financial crisis. The root of the problem is the theory of human\u0000behavior represented by “homo economicus”. The idea that short-sighted greed is\u0000“rational” is sheer folly. The theory is maintained in face of overwhelming empirical\u0000evidence to the contrary only because it serves the ideological interests of the rich and\u0000powerful capitalist classes. The philosophy of wealth maximization has led to the\u0000destruction of families, societies, economies, environment, fauna, and flora, as all are\u0000ruthlessly exploited for the creation and maximization of profits. Islamic teachings\u0000created a revolution in world history by promoting a society based on cooperation,\u0000generosity, and social responsibility. These ideas, completely missing from modern\u0000economics, have the same revolutionary potential today. The challenge for the\u0000Muslims today is to demonstrate this potential by translating these ideas into reality.

Beginning in the seventeenth century, European countries (and their overseas extensions) began to grow extremely wealthy. Since World War II, enrichment has spread around the world with the “Asian Tigers” of Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea becoming wealthy and with Chinese and Indian per capita income growing rapidly in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Extensive research has emphasized the material and later the institutional underpinnings of economic growth, but McCloskey (2006, 2010, 2016) argues that changes in how we think, speak, and write about entrepreneurs and innovators explains what she calls the Great Enrichment. In this essay, we explore some of the “materialist” hypotheses for economic growth and explain how changing ideas about entrepreneurship led to modern prosperity.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, “informed consent” emerged as a particular way to operationalize respect in medical and behavioral research contexts. Today, informed consent has been challenged by increasingly advanced networked information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the massive amounts of data they produce—challenges that have led many researchers and private companies to abandon informed consent as untenable or infeasible online.Against any easy dismissal, we aim to recover insights from the history of informed consent as it developed from the late 19th century to today. With a particular focus on the United States policy context, we show how informed consent is not a fixed or monolithic concept that should be abandoned in view of new data-intensive and technological practices, but rather it is a mechanism that has always been fluid—it has constantly evolved alongside the specific contexts and practices it is intended to regulate. Building on this insight, we articulate some specific challenges and lessons from the history of informed consent that stand to benefit current discussions of informed consent and research ethics in the context of data science and Internet industry research.

Instead of witnessing the birth of more pluralistic societies and stronger governance systems, the past years have brought the Arab region only renewed authoritarianism, conflict, and yet weaker state systems. The regional governance deficit is creating a striking underperformance of most Arab governments in political and socioeconomic development terms. To limit the damage of this downward trend, Arab governments must adopt a 2030 Vision of governance reforms to increase political participation and political freedoms, to ratify and implement international human rights conventions and transitional justice measures, adopt population policies that reflect the region’s changing demographic realities, reduce poverty through economic reform and combat corruption. The 2030 Vision will ensure the region enjoys a new era of inclusive, accountable and effective governance and the consequent benefits for sustainable development.

Indeed there is a discordant mix of economic consciousness, or conflict between tradition and modernity which has inhibited the impact on economic growth and development. What then has destabilized these innocent states of Africa? Where are the spirits of peace and wisdom? Wole Soyinka’s god of lyrics and idiomatic expression is present in African literature but not economics. Islamic finance certainly has some empirical solutions to offer on issues of human wellbeing (falah) and communal good life (hayya al tayyibah) but not yet in coherent guise; and the Christian missionaries have exposed Africans to Western education. Why then would the iroko tree near the reverend father’s house be cut down due to some extreme beliefs? How can one imagine an Africa that finds purposefully accommodating an integral mix of perceptions – of their own indigenous believes, Islamic affiliations and Westernized Christian ideologies? The African World System purportedly addresses development matters and unequal opportunities across nations while accommodating both political and also intellectual issues where theory and practice are interwoven. Many previous socio-economic theories are unfavourable to African development even though they worked in the North and West, at least to some point – before the melt down of neo-classical economic activities. With all these challenges, Africa still contends with the forces of the triple heritage and this piece illustrate a practical economic application of such.

It is argued that the crisis emanated largely from the wasteful use of investible funds both in the private and public sectors. The authors contend that only a substantial trend increase in quality public and private investments can produce the sustained economic growth necessary to alleviate the very high levels of unemployment and non-performing loans currently afflicting the economy. Subsequent to an analysis of the factors affecting investment performance, policies are proposed for raising productive investments. These should focus on building a capability to source funds and competently appraise and select investment projects, and also to restructure debt-laden, but potentially profitable enterprises. It is proposed that an institution with expertise in project financing, such as a National Development Finance Agency, be established to disentangle the complex web of the outstanding loans of enterprises and ascertain their viability and repayment capability. Furthermore, through a conversion of debt to equity and by attracting new funds this institution should facilitate potentially viable enterprises to undertake investments. In addition the institution should play a key role in the appraisal and financing of major developmental public sector projects and Public Private Partnerships.

This is particularly striking when compared to science, which has been strenuously brought into public view for decades. The academic work done around science engagement provides a starting point for our questions here. Who is the imagined public for economics? How are they to know about economics? What is the economics that is made when it is made public? By looking at museums, books, newspapers, movies and documentaries, and through an in-depth look at blogs, we describe a public that is presumed ignorant but interested, a knowledge that is communicated from the top down, and an economics that is technical, secretive and macro-focused.

There are contradictory results both in studies of different countries and within countries. Such a variety of results makes it impossible to transfer the findings from one academic system to another, and in Russia this problem has been under explored. This paper focuses on the relationship between inbreeding and publication activity among Russian faculty members. The results, using Russian data from the Changing Academic Profession survey, showed no substantial effect of academic inbreeding on research productivity. Inbred and non-inbred faculty members do not differ substantially in terms of the probability of having publications, or how many, although for inbreds such probability is slightly higher. These results are robust for different operationalizations of inbreeding and measures of publication activity. However the absence of significant differences in the number of publications may not mean the absence of a difference in their quality. The possible explanations and limitations of the standard measures of research productivity are discussed.

The key insight of this paper is that the reason a small open economy uses trade protections is not because of the existence of search frictions in the labor markets, but the real motivation is from labor market inefficiency. I show that the restricted parameter space considered in Costinot (2009) generates an equilibrium with inefficiently high unemployment compared to the constrained-efficient level of unemployment, and thus trade protections can improve welfare. In the more general parameter space considered in this paper, despite the existence of search frictions in a labor market, free trade can be optimal if the labor market is efficient. In addition, unemployment can be inefficiently low and import subsidies are preferable. The result holds true for standard matching functions.
