This approach allows independent ESs to exchange their knowledge in the rule level rather than in the system level. The Functional Diagram is developed to capture knowledge in ESs in terms of derivation relationships and restrictive dependencies among entities. Another essential system component of our approach is a powerful global knowledge manipulation language with high-level semantics, which allows the user to formulate highly-sophisticated inquiries. The associated global query processing mechanism allows independent ESs to function as parts of one system in deriving the best global answer despite the incompatibilities in their inferencing mechanisms and interpretation schemes. One advantage of this approach is that rules and constraints can in effect be shared among heterogeneous ESs.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"9 4 Pt 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115646654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper discusses our research in developing the concept of an Intelligent Authoring/Instructional System(IA/IS) that can be used as an intelligent courseware development environment as well as an intelligent tutoring system. The goal of our research is to integrate the contributions of the content expert, the instructional design expert, and the course-ware developer into one system that will be used by both authors and students. We discuss how artificial intelligence techniques associated with case-based planning can improve the management of the instructional interaction between the Instructional System and the student.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116775728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system has many features of an intelligent tutoring system. Its origininality lies in the patient modelling method used to closely represent the patients' impairments. The patient model provide a means to adapt the rehabilitation sessions to a particular patient. The tests used to diagnose the patient's impairments and then to train him in order to make him avoid his troubles are generated and not retrieved from some knowledge base. This insures the flexibility such a system needs. Finally an expert system is used to schedule the tests during a session.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128981530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We call our extension “PROLoop” (Yet another PROLOG-based Language for Object-Oriented Programming). PROLoop is the essential component of a PROLOG-based environment (“PROViro”) to develop knowledge and rule-based expert systems. PROViro consists of a series of pragmatic components as to testing (PROTest), knowledge version control (PROVers), self actualization of the documentation (PROSelf), etc. The potential of PROLoop stems from its simplicity. This simplicity makes PROLoop easy to use and to extend, allows to achieve a high degree of reliability of PROLoop programs, increases their maintainability, etc. Because of its artlessness, PROLoop is also a good example for understanding and teaching object-oriented programming. Nevertheless, PROLoop possesses sufficient expression power which we demonstrate by including non-trivial examples produced in a real project.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124209913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, we will introduce the technical modeling approach and the technical model as the basic concepts for an integrated engineering system. Then, we investigate the notion of “technical dependencies”, that can be characterized by the term technical constraints. They restrict the design process in such a way that they guarantee the design of a consistent part fulfilling all desired functional specifications. To show the variety of these constraints, we give an example taken from the area of shaft design. Special emphasis will be given to the modeling of the technical object structure and the organization of the constraints by means to be provided by Knowledge Base Management Systems. Further, we will point out the extensibility of our approach in order to add new technical elements or operations.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121859363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Silverstein, Peggy Sun","doi":"10.1145/98894.99147","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/98894.99147","url":null,"abstract":"There are many knowledge-based systems out in industry being used to solve problems in the domains of design, planning, and scheduling. These applications have largely been developed disjointly, with no provisions for integration or information sharing. From the manufacturing point of view, several key domains consisting of design, tooling, cost analysis are considered phases of a product's life cycle. The goal of concurrent engineering is to work out manufacturing issues by considering information from different sources in parallel. Therefore, it is logical that these different knowledge-based applications should be integrated into one system. A constraint management system can help in the task of integration by providing a standard way of representing and operating on constraints that impact the problem-solving processes of several knowledge-based applications. This paper describes a constraint management system that we have developed and how it has been used to create a knowledge-based application for circuit layout design.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132519980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The waste water consists of several contaminants(compounds or chemicals) that need to be removed during the treatment process. A treatability database has been developed containing the treatability of various compounds through different types of treatment processes. Normally several chemicals appear together and we may need to use two or more treatment processes together to meet the treatment objectives. The waste water treatment system consists of two phases. In the initial phase an inductive learning algorithm ID3 is used to extract the knowledge rules from the database. These rules are represented together to identify the effect of an individual treatment process on several compounds at various concentrations. The final phase has been formulated as a planning problem. This phase has been designed as a heuristic search problem to generate the sequence of technologies satisfying the necessary constraints.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"1975 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130218254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A few versions of both programs are implemented in Franz Lisp and are running on VAX 11/780. Both programs' main task is to automate knowledge acquisition for expert systems. Hence, they produce rules in the minimal discriminant form. The main problem addressed in the paper is the selection of the best mechanism for determining coverings, the minimal sets of relevant attributes. Four different methods, based on indiscernibility relation, partition, characteristic set and lower boundary are compared. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results of multiple running of many sets of examples, with variable number of examples and with variable number of attributes are taken into account. As a result the partition method is determined to be the most efficient way to compute coverings.","PeriodicalId":175812,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 3rd international conference on Industrial and engineering applications of artificial intelligence and expert systems - Volume 2","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130258990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
