Efficiency is the key to building any worthwhile vehicle, but it is especially important when fabricating a car with limited range like an EV. Our progress in converting a 1973 Porsche 914 from conventional gasoline power to an all electric drive and the decision making process involved in its construction are described. Our goal is to create a moving test bed that is fully upgradeable as well as to outfit the fastest, most efficient electric car possible using lead acid batteries. It will serve as a rolling classroom, not only for those building the initial car but also for future students who will eventually modify and advance its design. The main calculations involved were deciding the tradeoffs between components as they affect overall efficiency. The choices included which controller to use, how to power the accessory system, how to route the power cables and which batteries to install, among several other things.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127211251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first-year course ME 302, titled “Introduction to Engineering Design and Graphics,” was derived from a traditional Engineering Graphics course with added material that focuses on the engineering design process. The graphics component is based on a computer modeling educational paradigm that includes 2-D computer sketching, 3-D solid modeling of parts, assembly modeling, and the projection of an engineering drawing directly from the 3-D model. Other applications of the paradigm include kinematics animation, finite element analysis, and generation of a rapid prototype directly from the 3-D data base. In order to motivate the freshmen students in the area of engineering design, we have instituted a team project based on the concept of reverse engineering. Reverse engineering is the dissection of a common mechanical assembly into its individual parts, and then studying the geometry and design function of each part. The team activities in the reverse engineering project have been carefully scheduled by our group so that the teams systematically accomplish various phases of the project over the duration of the course, with intermediate due dates for major tasks. The student teams select a mechanical assembly, dissect it into individual parts, make measurements and sketches, build 3-D solid models, apply the solid models to various analyses, and make rapid prototypes. The whole project is eventually documented with sketches, 3-D model printouts, design analysis reports, prototypes, and final drawings.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134347508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interior of a vehicle can reach an extremely uncomfortable temperature after being left in the sun especially in the southern region of the United States. At such times, when a driver returns to his or her vehicle, they must sometimes cool it off themselves by venting the hot air; otherwise the interior components like the steering wheel or leather seats will be too hot to touch and could be distracting leading to lose control of the car. CATS was designed to provide an automatic system which helps in cooling the car. The driver is able to program the CATS by setting a desired cooling time before entering the vehicle. CATS is controlled using a cell phone or a web enabled system. Where CATS differs from other remote starter systems is the ability to start the car from anywhere by using a cellular telephone (or land line) or a web-based interface. The pager will turn the system ON depending on the car’s temperature. The interfacing of the pager with the system is explained in the following sections. The system when turned ON sets the ignition to ON position and starts the air condition to decrease the temperature in the car. It hence, proves to be quite helpful and efficient in many ways. The CATS was implemented in a 1995 Ford Escort and its functionality tested successfully. The Cellular Automatic Temperature System for Vehicles is currently under review by the office of Intellectual Property Management at the University of Houston for a potential patent.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134356124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Green construction is the latest practice that the engineers and the architects are working on around the globe in order to increase efficiency using resources such as energy, water, and materials available from nature to a maximum advantage. This should reduce the impact on human health and the environment during the building’s lifecycle, through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. The objective of the study is to emphasize the green construction phenomenon in order to educate and raise the methodology of green construction in the entire world. All types of facilities from small houses to large infrastructure projects and also commercial buildings, apartments, factories, entertainment facilities, and roads will be considered.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134571784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phantom loads consume a large amount of wasted energy in the United States. Some research has shown that typical household phantom loads draw about 65 W, or 569 kWh per year, which amounts to an estimated 5-10% of a household’s expected energy usage 1 . Several of the highest energy offenders are located in centralized areas in a home including the home office, kitchen, and entertainment centers. An entertainment center can consist of, but is not limited to, a plasma television, VCR, DVD player, CD player, stereo receiver, and numerous gaming consoles. This centralized hub presents an opportunity to eliminate or minimize a significant number of phantom loads with minimal cost of inconvenience for the end user. The authors have designed a phantom load controller that can activate a series of outlets feeding the entire entertainment center by intercepting any infrared power-on request. Furthermore, the controller automatically senses when the components of the entertainment center are all in standby mode and turns them completely off. The controller itself consumes less than one watt.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129401217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes an effort to develop future leaders. National statistics show that the number of people who choose to work in STEM areas is not keeping pace with the number of positions open. To make matters worse, the population sectors growing at the fastest pace are the populations that have some of the lowest representation in STEM disciplines. There are a number of efforts underway to reverse these statistics and one of these efforts is the NASA Administrator Fellowship Program (NAFP). The NAFP focuses on building faculty strength at HBCU/MI to: (1) increase quality and quantity of graduates, (2) help place faculty who understand the uniqueness of HBCU/MIs in key positions of leadership and (3) create a presence of NASA at the HBCU/MI universities. This paper describes one effort to develop leadership tools that focus on the application of decision and ethical theories to the art of leadership. The paper describes an effort to teach ethical decision making and presents some highlights of the program with a limited amount of assessment analysis.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115564721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of the staff development was to enrich teacher content knowledge of engineering, physics, and mathematics concepts through discussion and activity. The participants represented several local public and private schools. Projects included: the construction and launch of model rockets and prediction of their maximum height; building small electric motors; a brief discussion of internal combustion engines; team design, construction and testing of model trebuchets; a team heat transfer minimization design, construction and test exercise using recycled materials not specifically designed to be used for insulation; and a team wind chime design, construction and test exercise. As a group, the teachers brainstormed ways that these projects could be used at their schools after each project. Preliminary results indicate that the workshop was very successful, and some of the projects are being employed in classrooms.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124637828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A lot of effort is being made to switch to renewable sources of energy and use it to power the grid. Extensive investment and research is being made and we can expect a complete change in paradigm over the next decade. But immediate strategies are required now to bring down our energy consumption and meet the current needs. In the United States the federal agencies were required to reduce building energy consumption per square foot by 30% in 2005 and 35% in 2010, both relative to 1985. This executive order was passed after detailed analysis and studies carried out by Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) to identify costeffective energy efficiency measures that should be implemented in these structures. This paper has conducted a study on a high rise residential construction in the metropolitan city of Mumbai in India. The energy consuming appliances and fixtures in a typical residential unit in the city are identified and then replaced with the accessible technologies using renewable energy and energy efficient fixtures. The study has targeted changes that can be carried out by a single homeowner for his/her apartment in a multistoried building. A comparison between the existing energy consumption and that computed with the modifications presents a clearer picture as to whether 30% efficiency can be achieved in an existing residential building in the heart of Mumbai, India. The results further open up the different paths that can be adopted by the government for establishing benchmarks for increasing energy efficiency of high rise residential constructions by merely educating homeowners and the end users.","PeriodicalId":175579,"journal":{"name":"2009 GSW Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128459507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
