In this paper, we incorporate three-dimensional (3D) beamforming techniques to enable 3D spatial multiplexing of millimeter-wave communications in large cubicle office environments where there exists serious signal blockage problem. With 3D beamforming, a wireless link can be established by reflecting a focused beam off a metal-coated ceiling towards the receiver. By modeling the antenna beam with a rectangle-cone-shaped radiation pattern, we derive the “effective coverage district” of both the transmitter and the receiver to calculate interferences between different flows when they operate concurrently. We propose a heuristical concurrent transmission scheduling scheme to exploit the 3D spatial multiplexing for achieving high network throughput while maintaining good fairness among different network nodes. Extensive simulations are conducted under different network density conditions and with different background noise levels to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed scheduling scheduling scheme for the 3D beamforming 60 GHz network.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"17 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120920341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonetheless, these systems pose a huge threat if the operational cyber security is not handled properly, especially for the unmanned aerial vehicle systems (UAVS), which can cause catastrophic damages. Therefore, it is important to check the impact of various attack attempts on the UAV system. The most economical and insightful way to do this is to simulate operational scenarios of UAVs in advance. In this paper, we introduce UAVSim, a simulation testbed for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks cyber security analysis. The testbed allows users to easily experiment by adjusting different parameters for the networks, hosts and attacks. In addition, each UAV host works on well-defined mobility framework and radio propagation models, which resembles real-world scenarios. Based on the experiments performed in UAVSim, we evaluate the impact of Jamming attacks against UAV networks and report the results to demonstrate the necessity and usefulness of the testbed.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121153565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An inherent feature of ACB is the use of cooperative data processing and computing among network devices for the purposes of improving the related system robustness and dependability. In fact, as much as they may be differentiated, both ad-hoc and mesh networks share certain common aspects allowing for the application of the assumed scenario in the case of each of them. This approach aims to guarantee certain level of unification in terms of standardisation and validation, especially that the scenario is very demanding due to the existence of numerous walls impeding the quality of data transmission and, thus, calling for ACB as a remedy.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115263495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By introducing the concept of game theory, this paper proposes a handoff mechanism that comprises two phases. In the first phase, a modified Dutch auction (MDA) is used to sift the candidate femtocell base stations (FBSs) from the neighboring FBSs of the MUE. If the number of candidate FBSs is greater than one, the second phase is initiated. In the second phase, each candidate FBS determines if it wants to accept the handoff request of the MUE by executing a stochastic election process (SEP). In SEP, in order to balance the load of FBSs, an FBS with light load is with higher probability to accept the handoff request. Simulation results show that the loads of FBSs are balanced by employing the proposed game based handoff mechanism in the two-tier femtocell networks.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"455 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115959122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the near future, with the rapid development of hardware and chipset functionality, devices with CR capability will offer promising opportunities within future mobile networks. The new routing protocol exploits the transfer of CR performance data from the Physical/MAC layers up to Network layer as contributing factors within the route selection algorithm. A newly defined node mobility factor is considered together with the physical layer sub-channel real-time conditions when the route needs to be selected. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated via simulations and the results confirm its favorable operation within CR MANET environments compared to AODV and DSR.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121201075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to reduce such casualties, collisions warning systems has been studied extensively. These systems are built by taking the driver reaction times into account. However, most of the existing literature focuses on characterizing how driver reaction times vary across an entire population. Therefore, many of the warnings that are given turn out to be false alarms. A false alarm occurs whenever a warning is sent, but it is not needed. This would nagate any safety benefit of the system, and could even reduce the overall safety if warnings become a distraction. In this paper, we propose our solution to address the described problem; First, we briefly describe our method for estimating the distribution of brake response times for a particular driver using data from a Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) system. Then, we investigate how brake response times of individual drivers can be used in collision warning algorithms to reduce false alarm rates while still maintaining a high level of safety. This will yield a system that is overall more reliable and trustworthy for drivers, which could lead to wider adoption and applicability for V2V/V2I communication systems. Moreover, we show how false alarm rate varies with respect to probability of accident. Our simulation results show that by individualizing collision warnings the number of false alarms can be reduced more than 50%. Then, we conclude safety applications could potentially take full advantage of being customized to an individual's characteristics.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122670810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This impact is dependent on the level of burstiness of the multimedia traffic. This paper proposes eMTCP-BT, a novel energy-efficiency-oriented offloading scheme for multipath TCP (MPTCP) deliveries which considers traffic burstiness level in its decision making process. Mobile applications traffic is categorized according to its burstiness level, including some most widely-used services such as Voice over IP (VoIP) service, video streaming, large file downloading and web browsing. eMTCP-BT increases the energy efficiency of the multipath TCP content deliveries by performing an innovative distribution of the overall traffic for its delivery via the available wireless network interfaces (and paths) based on the traffic burstiness level. Real traffic trace-based simulation experiments have been conducted involving a mobile device receiving traffic over the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and IEEE 802.11 interfaces. Result analysis demonstrates how eMTCP-BT outperforms both eMTCP and the original MPTCP in terms of energy efficiency by up to 91.68%.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122720255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In specific, to calculate the energy consumption rate, one node's sampling rate is coupled with some other nodes. Moreover, because the energy consumption rate is constrained by the energy harvesting rate and current battery level to avoid depletion or overcharge of the battery, it is also coupled across the time horizon. In this paper, we will globally optimize the network utility. By dual decomposition, we decouple it into separable subproblems, which can be distributively solved without the need to coordinate with other nodes or time horizon. We then propose a distributed algorithm in the context of joint rate and battery control, which converges to the globally optimal solution. Numerical results, based on the real solar data, demonstrate that the proposed algorithm always achieves higher network utility than existing approaches.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127569118","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimum solution to this problem is derived for a zero-forcing (ZF) and a minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) equalizer, respectively. It is shown that the required powers for a given data rate can be analytically determined for the ZF equalizer, whereas a numerical solution is provided for MMSE equalization. The optimum approach to the joint optimization problem requires far too much computational complexity for an actual implementation and therefore two suboptimal algorithms with reduced complexity are proposed. Numerical results are presented that show that the reduced-complexity algorithms perform close to the optimum scheme.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132607405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the feasibility of using D2D communication to enhance the uplink communication for vehicular user equipment (VUE) devices. D2D communication allows fast data exchange among VUE devices, and therefore, a number of VUE devices can cooperate with each other and send data to the base station (BS) together. We employ a generalized co-phasing technique for the cooperation with perterminal power constraint, and compare the energy efficiency of single user direct transmission, and cooperative transmission participated by various number of VUE devices. As the public transportation vehicle moves away from the BS and for large vehicular penetration loss, less energy is required to send the same amount of data of each active VUE in the cooperative transmission than the individual VUE-to-BS communications. Hence VUE devices in well isolated vehicles, especially those ones with limited battery lives, can save energy because of the enhanced uplink communications.","PeriodicalId":174992,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Globecom Workshops (GC Wkshps)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132642980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
