If we agree that maps depict time over a limited arc, never in the same way, one arrives at a quandary of loose social constructionism or relativism for their study. Conceptually as tools, however, maps are not reducible to calendars or clocks, atlases or almanacs. Maps show traffic and movement, change over time. They do not fix a person or a country’s identity, or move time forward in a story of progress, mastery or conquest. Nor are they modern: maps are not all drawn to scale or with grids, not in the same manner. Time is a part of history, but history is just one variable. Time maps are constructs that represent the unstable; time can precede space; time can be out of place. Hence the nature of the book’s inquiry into symbolic design and representation. The aim of this beautifully produced volume, based on a 2017 conference at Stanford University’s David RumseyMap Center, is to offer a fresh digital-age approach to buried space-time propositions, assumptions, and frames for specific moments and cultures. Readers explore visually saturated “wheres” in which maps are temporal idioms, metaphors, and representations of an era and a place produced. The book curates time rhythms, often against the grain. Can one do serious forensic study of time in maps, without nostalgia for the artefact? Rather than separating an analog age from a twenty-first","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"33 1","pages":"169 - 171"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46632777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of her distinguishing features was new habits of consumption. Outside of Europe and the United States, these new forms of consumption were tied to new forms of education. Missionary education played a significant role in the process of this education, promoting competition among other schools, and creating a discourse about women in the press. In turn, missionary women were also profoundly affected by these encounters.","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"631 - 653"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42955231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That big fancy terms sprout up occasionally does not help either. In this regard, this well-organized symposium volume is a timely contribution to the field of world history. Instead of proposing yet another all-encompassing mega-framework that aims at organizing every era obsessively, the book presents several approaches and examples to study the “itineraries” of materials, practices, and knowledge while engaging other existing analytical categories. The first part (chapters 1 and 2) offers a methodological summary and a historical overview of Eurasian routes, while the rest three parts (chapters 3–12) include case studies, mainly of the early modern period, showing how “itineraries” can help connect a wide variety of topics from science and economy to arts and philosophy. The flexibility of the term “itineraries,” though, might be the same reason that this advantage seems less evident in the well-written but dense overview (part I). As editor Pamela H. Smith puts it, this volume “illuminate[s] how knowledge systems, epistemologies, objects, texts, materials, and practices that might appear to be stable or ‘natural’ are, in fact, agglomerations accreted and transformed over time and space”","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"717 - 719"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43035079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At one level, there is forceful articulation of the Mughals as preeminent political force with vast dominions, high culture, sophisticated administrative apparatus, and powerful military. However, it is somewhat ironical that when the focus veers to the maritime space, the consensus seems to hold that the Mughals were largely indifferent to maritime developments. But it is important to point out that the foundation of Mughal empire rested on the maintenance of strong army and robust economy which, in their context, entailed regular supplies of superior breeds of horses and bullion, respectively, from abroad because of their lack of local availability. So, the present article, by focusing on the supplies of bullion and its strategic utilities, argues that the Mughal reliance on the maritime routes to secure these supplies worked to transform their perception of the maritime space from indifference to proactive engagement.","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"559 - 578"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49190536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Antonello’s epilogue reminds us that Antarctica “was not, and is not, a timeless and unchanging region . . . It was invested with new meanings over the 1960s and 1970s, and . . . was thus a very different assemblage of concepts, ideas, histories, sciences, and material things in 1980 than in 1959” (p. 170). He covers a great deal of detail with clarity and concision, and a particular strength of his book is that, while the analysis is never simple, the thread of it is never lost. The Greening of Antarctica will be of obvious interest to any scholar interested in polar studies, but should also appeal to specialists interested in environmental history, diplomatic history, the history of science, and the crafting of cooperative conservationist regimes.","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"730 - 733"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46033680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

British East India Company encroachment in Asia inspired mission societies in Europe and mission boards in America to increase their efforts in the spread of Christianity. Both groups desired extended access to markets and souls, and yet, the assumptions that made these two endeavors seem compatible often proved untenable, and merchants and missionaries considered the other potentially disruptive to their own agenda. British missionary Robert Morrison incorporated disguise and deniability to settle and remain in Guangzhou. These efforts helped him use the otherwise distasteful merchant community to allow him to proselytize. The British East India Company, equally uneasy over missionary work, also hid their relationship to Morrison. Merchants and missionaries needed and used one another; disguise and plausible deniability facilitated their symbiosis.","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"581 - 600"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47257552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book wrongly asserts that rice is now “considered a food for poor people” in China (p. 124). Per capita rice consumption has declined with rising incomes; it is not stigmatized. In a section on Nigeria, the author asserts that the country’s ethnic diversity and “distinct food preferences” held back “the increase of crop yields based on the principles of the Green Revolution” without providing any hint as to why this would be the case (p. 136). Hurt concludes that the Green Revolution was a success in increasing food production—the only definition of success accepted by Norman Borlaug and other key proponents of the Green Revolution— but not in fighting hunger. What was the point, then? And was it really a success if, in the long term, these technologies left rural communities with exhausted aquifers, saline soil, toxic exposure to pesticides, and chemical-resistant pests, as Hurt documents in the conclusion? This book leaves ample room for new scholarship on the legacies and politics of the Green Revolution around the world.","PeriodicalId":17466,"journal":{"name":"Journal of World History","volume":"32 1","pages":"727 - 730"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2021-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42198318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
