Multiple-frequency bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) appears to be a useful and appropriate technique for assessing hydration status and body composition in hemodialysis patients.The aims of this study were to determine the pre and post hemodialysis hydration status of the pediatric hemodialysis patients by BIS and compare the dry weight determined by BIS to established by clinically. Material and Methods: Body Composition Monitor (BCM; Fresenius Medical Care, Germany) was performed in 13 pediatric hemodialysis patients in a single center. Patients were measured at the midweek session, once immediately before and once 30 minutes after dialysis. Pre-and post-HD weights, blood pressures, were collected on the day of the BCM measurements. Results: Seven (53.8%) of the 13 patients were male and 6 (46.2%) were female. The mean age ranged from 11.92 ± 3.13 (5.7-16) years and duration time ranged from 7 to 54 months, and the median duration of dialysis was 11 months. Dry weights which was determined clinically were higher than those calculated by BCM. A significant difference was found between mean values (34,71 ± 12,68 versus 33,71 ± 12,16 kg, Δ: 1 ± 1,51, p = 0.035). There was a high positive correlation between dry weights measured by BCM and dry weight established by nephrologists (r = 0.993, p <0.001). Conclusion: In assessing dry weight, BCM appears to be a quick and easy-to-use tool that can assist the clinician in hemodialysis treatment and optimizing patient outcomes.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"97 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88311335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Telomerase catalyzes DNA synthesis, which is necessary to maintain telomere length and stabilize the genome to allow continued cell proliferation. In this study, we explored the effects of TPN administration on telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) expression in various tissue and serum telomerase level. Material and Methods: In this study a number of 42 same-aged albino, equal number of male and female, new zealand rabbits were use, divided in to three groups. Group 1 rabbits received TPN for 10 days via a central venous catheter. Group 2 received 50 mL/ kg/day physiological saline via a central venous catheter. Group 3 served as the control group. The rabbits were sacrificed after 10 days, and serum telomerase levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TERT expression in gonadal, liver, jejunum, and skin tissues were determined immunohistochemically. Blood samples were obtained before and after TPN and saline administration in the TPN and serum saline groups, respectively, and at the end of the experiment in the control group. Results: Telomerase expression in liver, gonads and serum level of TPN group was significantly higher than control and serum saline groups. Conclusion: TPN may be a positive effect in liver and gonadal telomer kinetic. However, we think that TPN increases DNA damage throughout the body.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"72 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84149748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When considering physiological hemodynamic processes during sleep, togetherness of HT and OSAS become an important clinical picture. To investigate the frequency of hypertension in ‘Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome’ (OSAS) patients applied to sleep laboratory. Study Design: Retrospective clinical study. Material and Methods: The test protocol consisted of the PSG recording and diagnosis. Sleep stages and respiratory events observed during sleep were evaluated according to “American Academy of Sleep Medicine” (AASM). The blood pressure measured manually by a sphygmomanometer and the measurements occur 3 times on the left arm. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 23.0 statistical software package. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median, min-max). Results: Blood pressure measurements of 336 patients were evaluated. 98 (48 male, 50 female) of 336 OSAS patients were diagnosed as hypertension (29%). Hypertensive male patients had 3.3 times increased risk to be diagnosed as severe OSAS than female patients (OR=3,30; 95% CI=1,436-7,585). Together with this, hypertension frequency was found as 29% in patients with sleep disordered breathing. Conclusion: Finally; although hypertension and OSAS seem to be distinct clinical pictures, co-existence of these two disorders has been increased. Frequency of hypertension increases with increasing severity of OSAS. Hypertensive patients have increased risk for developing OSAS.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"25 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76153253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas, complication rate of the peptic ulcer, such as perforations or bleedings have not reduced significantly yet. The aim of the current study is to analysis the surgical treatment outcomes of our experience in 86 patients with peptic ulcer perforation. Material and methods: Between January 2012 and December 2017, 86 patients who were operated emergently for perforated peptic ulcer disease with GrahamÂ’s omental patch procedure in our hospital were included in this study. Demographic, clinical data, diagnostic studies, surgical procedures, operative findings, postoperative complications and patient follow-up were analyzed. Results: The mean age was (41.57±16.09) years. Out of 86 cases there were 65 (75.6%) male patients and 21 (24.4%) female patients. The mean operation time was 66.98±18.61 minutes. The mean hospital stay period was 7.95±2.02. In three months follow- up period, endoscopy was done to all of these patients and peptic ulcer disease was not seen in any of them. Conclusion: Our findings revealed that GrahamÂ’s omental patch repair is still a useful method for perforated peptic ulcer disease. Low complication rates, low duration of hospital stay and also low postoperative morbidity can be achieved with good preoperative and postoperative supportive care in open surgery for peptic ulcer perforation.
