Materials and Methods: 60 adult male Wistar Albino rats were randomly assigned to 5 main groups (Control, Fractured Mandible (FM), FM + GSE, FM + LLLT, FM + LLLT + GSE), and then these groups were divided into two groups of 7 and 21 days (n = 6). A vertical fracture line passing through the molar teeth was formed in the right mandibles of all subjects except for these in the control group, and the fracture was internally fixed with a four-hole microplate and four micro-screws. Malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities were analyzed to determine the changes caused by GSE and LLLT administration in rat liver tissues in fractured mandibles. Results: It was determined that MDA and SOD levels in FM group and GSH and CAT activity levels in FM + GSE group and MDA levels in FM + LLLT group and GSH and CAT levels in FM + GSE + LLLT group increased statistically significantly to the control group on days 7 and 21. Conclusion: Biochemical parameters were investigated on the 7th and the 21st days, and it was determined that the oxidative damage caused by mandibular defects could be eliminated substantially in the rat liver especially with the administration of grapeseed that has antioxidant capacity.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"41 1","pages":"127-133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82380835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this study was to investigate the levels of total glutathione, which plays a central role in cellular antioxidant defense, in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and plasma of individuals with gingivitis and periodontally healthy. Materials and Methods: Fifteen periodontally healthy subjects and 15 individuals with gingivitis were enrolled in the study. Samples of GCF, plasma, and clinical measurements were attained before and one month after non-surgical periodontal therapy. GCF and plasma levels of total glutathione were analyzed using spectrophotometric assay. Results: It was found that the levels of total glutathione in GCF were lower in gingivitis group than those in the periodontally healthy group (P<0.05), while there was no statistical difference in the plasma levels of total glutathione between gingivitis and periodontally healthy groups (P>0.05). Also, a statistically significant rise in GCF and plasma total glutathione levels in gingivitis group was found after periodontal therapy compared to baseline (P<0.05). Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between total glutathione and gingival index (P<0.05). Conclusion: Findings of this study showed that GCF and plasma levels of total glutathione could be influenced by gingival inflammation. In addition, it was revealed that the importance of periodontal therapy in the patients with gingivitis.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"18 1","pages":"162-166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88910585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 9-month-old girl underwent central venous catheterization via the right subclavian vein. Catheter tip was evaluated mistakenly as in the right atrium by plain radiography. The catheter was retracted 2 cm and 1/3 normal saline infusion was initiated at 15 ml/hr. The patient became hypoxemic at the 20th hour of fluid infusion. On radiography, the right lung was completely opaque and the catheter tip was positioned in the right lung. Bedside sonography revealed a massive pleural effusion in the right lung and the catheter tip in the right pleural space. The catheter was removed and the pleural effusion was drained via chest tube. The location of the catheter tip should be determined by an accurate technique before infusing fluid. Plain radiography can be misleading for the detection of malposition.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"21 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86408113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is one of the common complications, which is seen in many patients admitted to pediatric intensive care unit for long-term, and received multiple drug support. Pain, erythema and swelling can be observed when vesicant agents leak to extra-vascular space. Irritant agents can cause burning sensation and pain when extravasation occurs or by leading irritation at vessel wall before or at onset of extravasation. It may lead inflammation which can progress to phlebitis without necrosis (1-6). Here, we presented extravasation from total parenteral nutrition solution in an infant with mitochondrial disorder with poor general status who had been followed in pediatric intensive care unit. We achieved recovery without sequel in this patient by local heparinoid treatment.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"6 1","pages":"1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84756884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, medical error cases decided by the Supreme Court were examined. Materials-Methods: The work is retrospective, descriptive and analytical, and it is limited to civil court decisions on a suit for error. Sixty court decisions that were randomly selected in the study were obtained via www.yargitay.gov.tr and www.kazanci.com.tr. The decisions were examined in detail by researchers. Results: According to the research result, it is understood that the medical errors mostly occur in gynecology and obstetrics and general surgery branches. Treatment errors are the most important cause of medical errors. Material and moral damage ranks first, and death ranks the second due to medical errors. It has been revealed that the predominant responsibilities of medical errors are on physicians in large part. The two most common causes of medical errors are the choice of the wrong treatment method and surgical errors. Conclusion: In the light of the analyzes, it is seen that medical errors are largely human-induced factors. Therefore, establishing mechanism to minimize medical errors, increasing the level of awareness of medical staff about medical errors, to minimize wrong treatment method and surgical errors thought to be effective strategies to prevent medical errors.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"4 1","pages":"443-449"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78955420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it has been generally recommended, conflicting results have been reported in literature. The aim of this study is to obtain the current results regarding laparoscopic surgery for CA. Material and Methods: Patients who underwent surgery for acute appendicitis between July 2009 and January 2011 in Dr Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Appendicitis was considered as CA when there were one of the following criteria; existence of accompanying intra-abdominal abscess, peritonitis, gangrene or perforation confirmed by a histopathological examination. The patients with CA were divided into two groups, laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) group and open appendectomy (OA) group. Demographics, perioperative findings and postoperative course were compared. Results: 846 patients with the diagnosis of appendicitis underwent surgery at our center. Of these, 124 cases were complicated appendicitis. Eighty-five (68.5%) and 39 (31.5%) patients underwent to LA and OA, respectively. The mean ages in two groups were compatible (p=0.224). The mean body mass index was significantly higher in LA group. Presence of accompanying abscess and use of intra-abdominal drain were similar in both groups (p>0.05). Duration of operation was significantly higher in LA group (76.133.7 vs 57.8 22.5) (p=0.001). Although postoperative intra-abdominal abscess formation was slightly higher in LA groups (7 cases vs 1 case), there was no difference in postoperative complication between two groups. Length of hospitalization was also not different in both groups. Time to oral feeding was significantly earlier in LA group. Conclusion: Laparoscopy in complicated appendicitis can be the first choice with no increase in postoperative complications. However, the longer operation time is still a problem for laparoscopic technique despite increasing experience. According to us, future studies should be focused on this problem.","PeriodicalId":17427,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center","volume":"137 1","pages":"10-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85531637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
