In the market, there are commercial systems carrying out pre-analytical tests on biological specimens. An example is provided by the WASPLab, by COPAN Italia S.p.A., which monitors bacterial growth on Petri dishes that contain the samples, by taking and processing images of one dish at a time in a completely automated way. In this paper, we propose a newly monitoring sensor system for all the Petri dishes at the same time for the detection of bacterial growth with the aim of integrating it directly in the WASPLab. It could permit to obtain quantitative information about bacterial activity in real time directly inside the incubator, offering a more rapid and complete diagnosis response and avoiding the movement of the samples. In addition, the user can set measurement parameters according to his/her needs. This allows the system reaching a great level of flexibility. We tested our solution in two ways. First, we analyzed the behavior of the proposed solution comparing the output signals with the data obtained using an impedance analyzer (HP4194A) as reference. We obtained an average deviation equal to 0.768 Ω in magnitude and 0.059 ° in phase angle. Second, we carried out a 24-hour test to monitor the activity of Staphylococcus Aureus AT C 6538 in a climate chamber. We found that our system succeeded in observing bacterial growth, with an early detection time of 4 hours. Research is undergoing to integrate the proposed system in the WASPLab.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125678857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present the design and the experimental results of a self-contained long range capacitive sensor front-end that is based on phase modulation and is suitable for indoor human localization. The changes in reactance due to the changes in the sensor capacitance modulate the phase of a carrier frequency, which is then demodulated using a XOR gate as quadrature detector. A phase modulated carrier is both less susceptible to noise and easier to filter. The experimental results show a very good sensor sensitivity up to 150 cm for a 16 cm square sensor plate, very low noise and good measurement stability.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125404908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These patients suffer from blood-pressure regulation failure resulting in hypo-perfusion of the brain, which might lead to significant injuries due to falls. Detection of the onset of blood-pressure regulation failure enables the patient to start counter-measures and, hence, avoid hypo-perfusion of the brain. Monitoring of blood-pressure (BP) changes is key to develop an early alert solution. Several setups have been tested for this purpose using vascular unloading and pulse arrival time (PAT). The aim of this study was to do an initial investigation of using the electrocardiography (ECG) signal and accelerometry (ACC) signals acquired from the carotid to reliably infer pulse presence and pulse absence. A classifier using a correlation feature derived from the ECG and the ACC signals was conceptualized and implemented. The algorithm performance was tested with data acquired during scheduled head-up tilt table tests of 8 syncope patients. This is an essential step towards PAT inference as a BP surrogate.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122829083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By adding data from physiological measures, such as cerebral activity, skin conductance, heart rate and gaze position, more accurate information about cognitive engagement and emotional responses to a given task could be provided. This study aims to evaluate participants' emotional (arousal, valence) and cognitive (memorization effort, attention, pleasantness) responses toward two videos, through the integration of above cited measures. Our findings show that the two tested videos produce two different unconscious reactions (one video causes a significantly higher increase in heart rate and the other one requires higher memorization effort), while producing similar conscious responses (no statistically significant differences were found by analyzing questionnaires' answers). Further, eye tracking device provided a way to investigate reasons behind these differences. The results show that the integration of self-reported and biological measures with eye tracking data could effectively help to understand emotional and cognitive responses during video observation.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132799300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among them, we propose an approach for the simulation of dynamic scalar magnetization processes based on the solution of the diffusion equation. This model will be used for the estimation and prediction of the magnetic losses in a sample of Non-Oriented (NO) iron-silicon steel with pulse width modulation (PWM) excitations, in the typical frequency range of interest for automotive. Comparative analysis with measurements using a Single Sheet Tester (SST) is reported.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114743525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases IoT objects are battery powered and need to be energy efficient as the most important requirement in order to reduce battery replacement costs. Conversely, WiFi is still the predominant wireless technology, deployed in almost all everyday life environments and thus the easiest network type on top of which build an IoT ecosystem. In this paper we analyze the energy efficiency of constrained devices using WiFi, which is certainly a widely accepted technology, although not specifically designed for constrained devices. To perform our test, we use the ESP-12 SoC, which gained interest recently due to its low cost and capabilities. We test its performance by studying the battery duration of such device under different connectivity conditions, varying its authentication policy, its battery type and its duty cycle. We report results from laboratory tests and show that such devices can be an efficient compromise for low-cost low-energy scenarios using WiFi.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115244449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A good number of devices have been created or are under development, to let people suffering from blindness regain their sight, or at least the capability to recognize objects or to orient autonomously in space. Some devices were already developed to communicate the colors of the world to the user. We believe that, despite the physiological effects of colored lights are controversial, the re-visualization of colors could represent a major improvement for blind people, with beneficial effects on mood or manic-depressive states. The aim of this paper is to present a portable device acted to sense colors and to return them as a tactile stimulus to the user, following the haptics paradigm. The device was tested on 30 people (15 men, 15 women) with various age. The device was tested on primary colors (Red, Green, and Blue) and mixed colors with isoluminance. The results obtained are promising, with an overall accuracy in the detection of primary colors of 96.67% and mixed colors with 86.67%.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126105981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) exploit large scale service providers to vastly reduce costs and gather Big Data. However, cloud-based services still face various issues related to: high bandwidth requirements, unpredictable delays, and security and safety concerns. These issues are critical to health-care and Active and Assisted Living (AAL) where a correct and timely reaction can result in saving a life or drastically reducing a disability (e.g. after a stroke). In this scenario, we present a flexible multi-level architecture using the fog approach, a computing paradigm in which heterogeneous devices at the edge of the network collect data, compute a task with minimal latency, and produce physical actions meaningful for the user, leveraging upon context and location awareness. In this paper, we envision also an edge node built upon Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. The hardware of a FPGA node can be reconfigured to produce maximum performance in tasks, to guarantee a minimal delay, or the capacity to scale on the number of devices connected, with a minimal power consumption. We present two case studies for assistive smart ambients and health applications designed on our Fog architecture.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128929505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Miogen Lab has been able to collect a large amount of data on patients affected by FSHD and their relatives over the years, also extending the research to their ancestors. Collected data include molecular analysis, clinical information on health status, family pedigree and geographic origin. The challenge of FSHD Registry is to investigate these large amount of information, discover additional elements related to disease onset and better understand the clinical progression and genetic inheritance of the disease, exploiting data integration capabilities and Big Data techniques. In this paper we describe the tools we used to collect, integrate and display these data in a framework that allows users to search among clinical records to elaborate brief reports and discover new relations on collected data. The solution provides charts, maps and search tools customized on the specific needs that came to light during the collaboration between DataRiver and Miogen Lab, joining the clinical knowledge of the latter with the information technology expertise of the former. The framework offers a single entry point for all genomic and therapeutic studies.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126433481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure high receiving performance, specific lab tests were designed and conducted to identify and set the basic RFID gate design parameters. During the test, we designed and built a specific receiving infrastructure made up of a metal frame and an RFID gate with four antennas and one reader, positioned in the middle of the tunnel itself. The tests were conducted by changing (i) the type of antennas, (ii) shielding / non-shielding with RF absorbing material the exit of the tunnel, and (iii) changing the RFID reading power. The performance of the RFID receiving tunnel are evaluated in terms of (i) number of tag reads, with respect to the total number of expected tags; (ii) number of false reads (e.g. tags read outside the tunnel) and (iii) read count for each tag. The performance analysis allowed us to define the optimal settings for the RFID receiving tunnel, to ensure the maximum value of receiving process accuracy with the minimum reading power, and thus minimum number of false reads.","PeriodicalId":173474,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 3rd International Forum on Research and Technologies for Society and Industry (RTSI)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128555288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
