The algorithm performs line by line processing of laser intensity images, produced by laser sensory units, and extracts vehicle features used for the classification. The features include vehicle length, width, height, speed, and some distinguishable patterns in the vehicle profile. The proposed technique outperforms the range data technique in deteriorated atmospheric conditions (such as rain and fog). A software package with a graphical user interface has been developed to illustrate the usage of the classification algorithm and to evaluate its performance.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. The fault can be detected because the residual generated by the fault detection filter is zero when there is no fault and the residual becomes nonzero when a fault occurs. Furthermore, the faulty component can be identified because the residual is nonzero in a unique and a priori known direction for each fault. Finally, the fault can be reconstructed from the residual by the fault reconstruction process. The performance of the fault detection filter and fault reconstruction process are evaluated using empirical data.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. A dynamic road traffic model is applied to traffic control at an isolated intersection to determine control sequences. The control of an isolated intersection is formulated as a linear systems control problem on the basis of mathematical models. These models are utilized to develop local traffic signal control strategies under various traffic conditions. The key focus in the paper is in applying efficient optimal control techniques based on linear systems control theory to solve the linear traffic models problem. The main contribution of this research is the development of a methodology for alleviating the recurrent isolated intersection congestion caused by high transportation demand using existing technology.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. The possibilities open to these new applications are enormous given: (1) the extraordinary diffusion of mobile phones; (2) the new technological developments in the field of mobile phone data transmission; and (3) the implementation of E-911 in USA and the potential economic interest of mobile phone producers and mobile phone network operators towards mobile phone localization systems. The mobile phone based toll collection is discussed and a new traffic monitoring system is introduced that can produce estimates for dynamic old matrices and the evaluation of travel times. The idea of the system is to use all the localization data that the mobile network operators already have to obtain estimates of old traffic matrices. The methodology is analyzed in order to establish statistical properties and calibration methodologies.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. Pentland and Liu have demonstrated that they can categorize human driving actions very soon after the beginning of the action using dynamic Markov models. The experiment was conducted within a driving simulator instrumented to record driver control input such as steering wheel angle, brake position, and accelerator position. Our work is an attempt to assess the classification accuracy of the modeling approach in real driving situations.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. In the proposed method, instead of using the 2D image data directly, the intrinsic 3D data is estimated in a monocular image sequence. Given the binary vehicle mask and the camera parameters, the vehicle shape is estimated by the four stages shape approximation method. These stages include feature point extraction, feature point motion estimation between two consecutive frames, feature point height estimation from motion vector, and the 3D shape estimation based on the feature point height. We have tested our method using real world traffic image sequence and the vehicle height profile and dimensions are estimated to be reasonably close to the actual dimensions.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. For each frame, the algorithm develops estimates of the geometry and width of the current lane ahead of the vehicle and also the position and orientation of the vehicle with respect to the center-line of the lane. Basic image processing techniques are used to extract a candidate set of lane marker locations from the image. These are used to generate a pool of center-line candidates with properties dependent on the lane markers. A method of elimination based on dynamic programming is used to isolate a final set of center-line candidates that constitute the actual geometry of the road. The road geometry is modeled using a clothoid curve, which stipulates that the curvature of the road varies as a linear function of arc length. The clothoid center-line representation also aids in determining the offset of the vehicle from the center-line and the heading angle of the vehicle with respect to the road. Finally, a Kalman filter is applied to the estimated parameters to preserve smoothness and to predict lane parameters for the next image frame. A set of confidence measures for the estimated data is calculated for use by a higher level data fusion algorithm The system gives an estimate of parameters under normal traffic and driving conditions and runs in real-time on off-the-shelf hardware.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems. While GPS alone can provide position information, it has several weaknesses, such as low data output rate and vulnerability to external disturbances. We explore the feasibility of an integrated positioning system using a differential GPS (DGPS) and an inertial navigation system (INS) for the control of an automated vehicle. An extended Kalman filter which combines the measurements from the DGPS, INS, and vehicle sensors to produce estimates of various vehicle states is derived. A methodology which, using map data, converts position measurements to vehicle lateral offset and desired speed, as applicable for the control of an automated vehicle, is presented. An analysis of the overall closed-loop vehicle control system is discussed. Finally, the performance of the proposed control scheme is examined through field tests conducted on two different vehicle platforms, an automated golfcart and a drive-by-wire Honda Accord sedan.","PeriodicalId":173372,"journal":{"name":"ITSC 2001. 2001 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems.
