The algorithm is of interest in cellular communications and military/intelligence applications. Our method is based on minimizing a constant-modulus error (CME) criterion. It as different from the well-known constant modulus algorithm (CMA). Firstly, the CMA is traditionally employed for channel equalization problems. Secondly, the CMA minimizes the CME over the parameters of a transversal filter. On the other hand, our procedure extends the CMA concept to the co-channel signal separation problem: it uses a parametric model for the underlying signals and minimizes the CME over the parameters of the signal model, hence the name parametric CMA (PCMA).","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115906087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gradient algorithm with degree 1 least-square fading memory prediction is adopted for the channel estimator. Using the results produced by the channel estimator, the coefficients of the equalisation filter are indirectly updated. Computer simulation results show that the channel estimation based adaptive equaliser provides significant improvement in the case of a second order Markov communication channel model.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123899918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially the problem of suppressing co-channel interferers that appear outside the training sequence is addressed. It is observed that if a cochannel interferer is present during the data sequence but not during the training sequence of a frame, then it will be present during the training sequence of an adjacent frame. The interferer plus noise spectrum of adjacent frames is utilized in order to suppress such co-channel interferers. The effect on the performance is illustrated with an example scenario for the GSM system.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114579948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analogous to previously proposed auditory models, a parallel-bank of M filters forms the front-end of our model. However, each filter output is further decomposed into a minimum-phase (MinP) and a maximum-phase (MaxP) component. These components are analytic signals with special envelope-phase relationships. Once the filter output is decomposed into MinP/MaxP components we compute the instantaneous frequencies of these components. Finally, we sift through the instantaneous frequencies of all the MinP components and retain only those filter outputs that are entirely MaxP. It appears that a handful of instantaneous frequency tracks of MaxP components are sufficient to represent vowel sounds.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"86 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120824807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In situations where the round trip delay between the mobile and the base station is smaller than the correlation time of the channel (e.g., terrestrial systems, and systems using base stations onboard low altitude UAVs in tactical environments), power control schemes using feedback from the base station can be effective to compensate for the multipath fading. In this paper, we present the performance of such a closed loop power control (CLPC) scheme applied to a cellular CDMA system. The effect of various loop parameters, including power control update rate, loop delay due to propagation and processing, and vehicle speed, on the average bit error performance of the system are estimated through simulation. The capacity improvement due to effective power control in a single cell as well as a multi-cell CDMA system operating over both frequency non-selective and frequency selective fading channels are estimated.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128406679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper further introduces a generalized FxLMS recursion and establishes that the various recursions are in fact of filtered-error form. An optimal choice of the step-size parameter in order to guarantee faster convergence, and conditions for robustness, are also derived. Several simulation results are included to illustrate the discussions.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128442277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper considers time-domain design formulas minimizing the mean-squared symbol recovery error achieved by a finite-length FIR fractionally-spaced equalizer with a time span shorter than the channel impulse response time span for white zero-mean QAM sources in the presence of white zero-mean channel noise. For minimum mean-squared error designs the symbol error rates achievable are plotted versus the ratio of the source variance to the channel noise variance (with the channel model power normalized to achieve a received signal of unit variance) for different fractionally-spaced equalizer lengths on 64-QAM for several T/2-spaced channel models derived from experimental data. Our intent is to fuel the ongoing debate about fractionally-spaced equalizer length selection.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127082961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, conversion from RNS to binary is a significant bottleneck. We present an efficient scheme to convert residue numbers to binary numbers using table-lookup. The overall goal is to minimize the hardware needed for implementation while maximizing the speed of the conversion. Our design decreases the table size by a factor of 2 and reduces the number of required lookups compared to an existing design.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127175167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we study the use of CMA on a decision feedback equalizer (CMA-DFE) for blind channel equalization. We analyze the convergence behavior of this highly nonlinear adaptive system. We also find a class of channels for which the decision directed DFE algorithm (DD-DFE) will not converge to the global optimum when initialized at the origin. For some of these channels, the CMA-DFE does not suffer the same ill-convergence.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122378427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a heterogeneous architecture, functional units could be either bit-serial or digit-serial or bit-parallel. This paper assumes a library of heterogeneous implementation style based functional units to be available. The proposed heuristic synthesis approach generates optimal and near-optimal area solutions. Although optimum synthesis of such architectures were proposed using an integer linear programming (ILP) model our method can produce similar solutions in one to two orders of magnitude less time, at the expense of sacrificing the cost optimality. This new approach has been incorporated into the Minnesota Architecture Synthesis (MARS-II) system.","PeriodicalId":171264,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of The Twenty-Ninth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130553636","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
