However, a common shortcoming with the current soft-core offerings is their limited software execution capability: the required performance for the implementation can be often reached only with instruction set extensions. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an application-specific processor design toolset that uses a multi-issue exposed data path processor architecture template. The main benefit of the architecture is scalability with respect to instruction-level parallelism (ILP). The design flow allows the designer to freely customize the data path resources in the core to exploit the ILP available in computation intensive kernels. The design toolset includes a retargetable C compiler and an architecture simulator, making design space exploration feasible. The experiments show that a relatively small soft-core tailored with the toolset provides significant speedups on software execution without using any instruction set extensions. The best measured speedup in comparison to the major commercial soft-cores was fourfold in applications from the CHStone benchmark suite, while the amount of consumed FPGA resources remained moderate.","PeriodicalId":171235,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121775229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multithreading is proposed as the method to manage long latency events that are caused by I/O, off-chip memory and other shared resource accesses. However, most of the earlier multi-threaded soft-processors were based on conventional FPMT and CGMT architectures, which fall short for several reasons. In this paper, we propose a novel multithreading architecture for soft-processors that eliminates the thread switch penalty, while maintaining the single thread performance.","PeriodicalId":171235,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122067315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a design progresses and more detailed information becomes available, more accurate power estimations become possible but at the cost of significantly slower simulation speeds. Power simulation that is both sufficiently-accurate and fast would have a positive impact on architecture and design. In this paper, we propose PrEsto, a power modeling methodology that improves the speed and accuracy of power estimation through FPGA-acceleration. PrEsto automatically generates FPGA-based power estimators consisting of linear models that are designed to be integrated into fast, accurate FPGA-based performance simulators of microprocessors. Our prototype implementation predicts the cycle-by-cycle power dissipation of the LEON3 core and the ARM Cortex-A8 core to within 6% of a commercial gate-level power estimation tool, while running several orders of magnitude faster. The combination of simulation speed and accuracy is not only useful to architects and designers, it is fast enough to be useful for power-sensitive operating system and application developers.","PeriodicalId":171235,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124039239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dedicated hardware accelerators for the different network processing and detection layers allow the honeypot to operate at full speed of a 10 Gb/s connection and project the illusion of thousands of vulnerable systems at once. Smart cameras provide the ability to understand their environment. Object detection and behavior classification play an important role in making such observations. This paper presents a high-performance FPGA implementation of a generalized parts-based object detection and classifier that runs with capability of 266 frames/sec. The detection algorithm is easily reconfigured by simply loading a new representation into on-board memory, i.e., the FPGA can detect and classify a newly specified object and behavior without any changes to the hardware implementation.","PeriodicalId":171235,"journal":{"name":"2010 International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications","volume":"49 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114120292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the low Non-Recurring Engineering (NRE) cost solution provided by commercial FPGAs must take into account the high sensitivity to electronic defects. Fault-tolerance schemes, which prevent their architectures from being defective during products life-time, can decrease the system computing power. Therefore, building such fault-tolerant system needs an analytical model to analyze the effect of fault mitigation schemes on the system performance. This paper presents an analytical approach for a fault-tolerant dynamic multi-processor system-on-a-chip (FT-DyMPSoC) which is able to resist to predominant fault in FPGAs - Single Event Upset. The analytical model is introduced to assess the performance, the reliability and the trade-off of a fault-tolerant MPSoC system.
