Biometric data were obtained from 100 fruits and 100 seeds. The determining parameters in the biometry of the fruits were: length, width, mass and number of seeds/fruit and for the seeds: length, width, thickness and mass. In the germination test, a factorial scheme (3x4), three maturity stages (green, intermediate and reddish), and four temperatures (20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) were used. The analyzed variables were: germination, germination speed index (GSI), mean germination time (MGT), time to obtain 50% germination (t50), percentage of seedlings, length and dry mass of shoots and roots, and collar diameter. Fruits and seeds showed greater variation in the parameters fresh mass and number of seeds per fruit. The germination speed index was higher in seeds from reddish fruits, and seeds from green fruits originated better-developed seedlings. Temperatures of 25 and 30 °C are recommended for conducting the seed germination test at the three maturity stages.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67325237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of an adequate methodology that expresses the real physiological quality of seeds and minimizes possible phytotoxicity by chemicals is important for the production chain. In this context, the aim was to evaluate and validate the paper roll plus vermiculite (PR+V) germination test methodology for use in corn seeds. Two hybrids, one sensitive and the other tolerant to seed treatment, both with different vigor levels and under different chemical treatments, were used. Ten laboratories accredited by the Ministério da Agricultura e Pecuária (MAPA) were selected to perform and evaluate the PR+V germination tests. The data were subjected to statistical procedures to estimate the repeatability and reproducibility and check the accuracy and robustness of the test. The data were accurate, robust, and precise within the critical limits of 1 and 5%. The statistical results for repeatability, reproducibility, and bounds of the Mandel test were also accurate and precise at the critical limits of 1 and 5% for the normal seedlings evaluated by the PR+V methodology. Thus, the methodology can be used routinely to test corn seeds, especially those treated with phytosanitary products.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67325312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the processing stages on the physical and physiological quality of chickpea seeds, cultivar BRS Cícero. Seeds were sampled before processing and after passing through the air screen machine (upper sieve of 12 mm and lower sieve of 7.5 mm), elevators, storage silo, and gravity table (upper discharge, high intermediate, low intermediate, and lower discharge). The seeds were evaluated for moisture content, physical purity, germination test, electrical conductivity test, emergence in sand, emergence speed index, accelerated aging, and tetrazolium test. The processing resulted in increased physical purity and reduced percentage of broken seeds in the lot of chickpea seeds. Seeds collected from the upper and intermediate chutes of the gravity table showed higher germination values. Seed processing using the air screen machine and the gravity table is effective in improving the physical and physiological quality of the lot of chickpea seeds, cultivar BRS Cícero.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67325097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sweet corn is a naturally mutated corn cultivar with weak seed vitality during storage. In this study, we have shown that endogenous hormone level dynamics of fresh and aged sweet corn seeds were different during early geminating process. Transcriptomic assembling uncovered several novel transcripts during early stage of sweet corn germination in signal transduction and RNA processing pathways. Comparative transcriptomic profiling revealed that expression of many genes was activated earlier in aged seeds than fresh ones. Functional analyses showed that, as two major networks, plant hormone signaling and defense pathways were different between fresh and aged sweet corn seeds. Auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, salicylic acid and jasmonic acid signaling pathways were activated earlier in aged seeds than fresh ones on the first day after imbibition. These results provided knowledge for understanding the ageing process of sweet corn seeds and several candidate genes for genetic study of seed ageing mechanism.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"50 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67324795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treated and untreated delinted seeds of the cultivar DeltaOpal were sowed in sand contained in plastic trays, placed in individual and equidistant wells, 3 cm deep. Into each plastic tray were put 3.0 g of the pathogen inoculum. The inoculation of R. solani AG-4 was done by the homogeneous distribution of the fungus inoculum onto the substrate. The fungus was grown for 35 days on autoclaved oat seeds and then ground to powder using a mill (1 mm). Fungicide seed treatments had a significant effect (P ≤ 0.05) on initial and final seedling emergence, pre and post-emergence damping-off, injured seedlings and disease index according to McKinney formula (lesion severity). The best results were obtained by fludioxonil + metalaxyl-M + azoxystrobin, fipronil + pyraclostrobin + methyl-thiophanate, carbendazim + thiram + pencycuron + baytan and carbendazim + thiram + pencycuron + baytan + procymidone. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that injured seedlings and disease index were positively correlated (R = 0.95). This means that the greater the number of injured seedlings, the greater the disease index and the less efficient the fungicide. The fungicides used in the present study did not have any phytotoxic effect on cotton seedlings.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67325163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on Baskin and Baskin’s classification system for seed dormancy, the cause of dormancy in Tarenaya hassleriana (Cleomaceae) seeds was studied using alternating temperature, cold moist stratification, dry storage, and GA3 soaking treatment. The results indicated that fresh mature T. hassleriana seeds had a combinational dormancy, including a physical dormancy and a type 2 non-deep physiological dormancy, and were photoblastic, with an optimal germination temperature of 35°C. In addition, fresh mature T. hassleriana seeds may be efficiently released from dormancy and promoted to germinate by an alternating temperature of 20 °C/30 °C, cold moist stratification, and cold moist stratification following dry storage. Furthermore, GA3 soaking treatment could also promote dormancy release and subsequent germination at 35 °C, and dry storage treatment could promote dormancy release and subsequent germination at 5-15 °C. These results also suggested that there were complex cross-talks among phytohormone, osmotic potential, and the temperature signaling regulatory pathways during dormancy release and germination of T. hassleriana seeds, which deserve further study.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67325226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the obstacles has been the scarcity of optimizing techniques capable of efficiently discriminating thermotolerant and thermosensitive cultivars. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of neural networks to discriminate different levels of thermoinhibition in lettuce seeds. Seeds of 18 cultivars were evaluated for thermoinhibition considering the characteristics of the first and last germination count and germination speed index, in seeds subjected to temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C. The remaining seeds, which did not germinate, were subjected to the tetrazolium test. Analyses were performed immediately after seed harvesting and repeated after six months of storage. Discriminant analysis was performed and the Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was created using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). Neural networks discriminate lettuce cultivars and organizes them in terms of seed thermoinhibition tolerance through Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Map. Discriminant analysis consistently identifies the Everglades and Luiza genotypes as tolerant to thermoinhibition.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67324842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite this growth, the lack of quality control and knowledge about the effects of the nutritional status of plants has compromised the germination and vigor of a significant proportion of seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological performance of seeds and root growth of soybean cultivated with boron (B) sources with different solubilities incorporated into the soil. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2×5 factorial arrangement, with two B sources (boric acid and ulexite) and five B rates (0, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mg.kg-1). 100-seed weight (100SW), germination, seedling shoot length (SSL), seedling root length (SRL), accelerated aging (AA), root protrusion (RP), lignin content in the seed coat (LCSC), and root volume (RV) were evaluated. The B sources and rates showed a significant interaction with increases in RV, RP, SSL, SRL, and 100SW, while the LCSC decreased with increasing rates with no interaction effect, indicating a reduction of seed quality with rates up to 8.0 mg.kg-1, regardless of the B source used.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67324442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was a randomized factorial design of 3 x 4 x 2 and two periods of storage evaluation (0 and 180 days). The cotton seeds were delinted at three different times (2, 4, and 10 minutes), neutralized using four distinct neutralizers (Quicklime, Hydrated lime, Filler lime, and NaOH), and there were seeds with and without neutralizer residue. The evaluations carried out were: water content, seed residual lint imaging, germination, seedling emergence, and seedling length imaging. The neutralizers Quicklime, Hydrated lime, and Filler lime do not need removal from the cotton seed coat. In storage, only the neutralizer NaOH has a high latent effect in lowering cottonseed quality, and the other neutralizers have lower physiological quality when the residue is removed. The image analysis phenotyping is efficient in identifying seedlings’ vigor.","PeriodicalId":17113,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Seed Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67324736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
