Methods In a cross-sectional study conducted in a rural area of the Gyeongju area in 2014, we extracted data on 1,847 people using data from Korean medicine Data Center (KDC). The SC types diagnosed by Sasang constitutional medicine doctor. The stress was measured by the psychosocial well-being index questionnaire, and the obesity was defined by the body mass index. Results In all SC type, the stress and obesity was associated with MetS. There was a significant difference in the prevalence and trend of MetS according to presence of stress and obesity. The prevalence of MetS was the highest in Taeumin with all the stress and obesity, in order of Soeumin and Soyangin. Regardless SC types, the stress was associated with higher risk of MetS in the obese but not in the nonobese. Conclusion The results of this study indicate that further research is necessary to the SC types for the management of the Metabolic syndrome according to stress and obesity.","PeriodicalId":17064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine","volume":"12 1","pages":"58-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86662748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods The study examined 9-week-old male mice (C57bl/6J) divided into four groups: the normal(C57bl/6J-Nr), control (high-fat diet only; HFD-CTL), positive-control (high-fat diet with Garcinia cambogia), and experimental (high-fat diet with Jeoreongchajeonja-tang; HFD-JCT) groups. After 7 weeks, the body weight, food efficiency ratio, organ weight, and visceral fat weight of the mice were measured. Blood serum tests, mRNA, liver histopathology, and epididymis adipocytes were also examined. Results Compared with the Control(HFD-CTL) group, the Experimental(HFD-JCT) group given Jeoreongchajeonja-tang showed significant reductions in absolute body weight and food efficiency ratio. The serum alanine aminotransferase, total-cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, insulin-like growth factor-1, and leptin levels were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. The serum adiponectin levels were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significant reductions in absolute abdominal subcutaneous fat, epididymal adipose tissue, kidney adipose tissue, intestine adipose tissue, and liver, kidney and spleen adipose tissue weights. The C/EBP-β, leptin, and SREBP1c/ADD1 mRNA expression were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group, while the UCP-2 and adiponectin mRNA expression were significantly higher. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed a significant reduction in the absolute adipocyte area in the liver and epididymal adipose tissue. Also, we aimed to analyze the factors affecting BMI. Methods Forty-four female college students participated in this study. Sasang Constitution was determined by Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification (QSCC) II. BMI was measured and ordinary symptoms were acqired through the questionnaire. Special symptoms was determined by Fatigue Severity Index (FSS), Premenstrual Symptom Screening Tool (PSST), ROME III, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), respectively. For statistical analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and correlation test has been used. Results There existed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms between sasang constitutions. Taeumin had higher urine frequency than soyangin, soeumin had higher gap of feces than taeumin. Taeumin had higher BMI and ROME III score than soyangin and soeumin. They showed significant differences in ordinary symptoms and special symptoms according to BMI. Overweight and obese group is higher in water intake than low and normal group. Low weight and normal group is higher in gap of feces than overweight and obese group. High score group in PSST and ROME III showed high BMI than low score group. We analyzed the factors that affect BMI. BMI are highly correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, FSS, PSST, ROME III and OSDI showed high correlation with each other. Conclusion Urine frequency and gap of feces are different among sasang constitutional types. The obese group and normal group showed significant differences in water intake, gap of feces, PSST and ROME III score. It is found that factors that affecting BMI are systolic and diastolic blood pressure. These results may lead to identifying the causes and factors of obesity in female college students related to Sasang constitution.","PeriodicalId":17064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine","volume":"15 1","pages":"48-61"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85837767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we discussed how to apply the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) of Sasang constitutional medicine to patients with cancer. Methods We investigated the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) through the literature of Gyukchigo (格致藁), Donguisusebowon-Sasangchobongyun (東醫壽世保元 四象草本卷), Donguisusebowon (東 醫壽世保元) and Dongmuyougo (東武遺稿), and presented the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) for patients with cancer based on the clinical experience. Results We identified the equilibrium and harmony (中節) of sorrow-anger-joy-pleasure (喜怒哀樂) is the basis of treatment and suggested ‘understanding of the others (知人)’, ‘understanding of the diseases (知病)’ and ‘knowing and acting (知行)’ as methods to control of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾). The ‘understanding of the others (知人)’ and ‘understanding of the diseases (知病)’ could reduce the psychological distress. The ‘knowing and acting (知行)’ encourages the patients to overcome the covetous desire (心慾) and have a positive attitude to life and disease.
