This concept can be implemented in several areas, including smart cities, transportation, telemedicine, agriculture, and wearable applications. However, this increase in connectivity demand can lead to spectrum shortages in the future. In addition, in the development of future green communications, it is crucial to incorporate self-powered systems using energy harvesting technologies. In this review, it is shown that the integration of cognitive radio and radio frequency energy harvesting into IoT development can address the spectrum shortages and energy issues mentioned earlier. The findings indicate that the operating model works based on the slotted approach and state consideration, and the system’s performance metric can be optimised by adjusting parameters such as harvesting time, sensing time, transmit time, transmission power, interference level, and others. This review provides a comparative summary of several focus domains, such as RF harvesting, spectrum sensing and utilisation, operating models, and some open research issues for further work.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is necessary to study groundwater resources to prevent groundwater crises. This study uses hydrogeological and geophysical data to map aquifer conditions. Fifty gravity data and 16 Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) points were used to model subsurface conditions. Meanwhile, one drilled cutting data is used to tie the cross-section of the 2D model. The results of gravity modelling show the potential for local groundwater aquifers fills fractures and faults above the bedrock. Meanwhile, the results of the VES modelling interpret the unconfined aquifer as being in the sand layer at a depth of 10–25 m and confined aquifer at a depth of 110 m. Between the two aquifers, there is a low permeability zone of interbedding clay and sand thickness of 65 m from a depth of 25–90 m. These results indicate that the condition of groundwater resources in unconfined aquifers is prone to depletion. Furthermore, infiltration ponds could be a solution to maintain the sustainability of groundwater resource storage in Northern Bandar Lampung.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, advanced machine learning techniques, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), provide a better alternative as they are substantially faster, more cost-efficient and more effective in handling non-linearity. In recent years, many ANN models have been developed to achieve satisfactory wave forecasting results. However, most of the research is limited to wave height forecasting and rarely any method that highlights the issue of seasonal fluctuation, which exists in time series data, is proposed. Keeping this in mind, this study proposes a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network-Gated Recurrent Network (CNN-GRU) model with a combination of seasonal adjustment based on Seasonal Trend Decomposition Loess (STDL) for wave parameters forecasting, including wave height and period. To evaluate model performance, error criteria methods, such as index of agreement (d), correlation coefficient (R) and root mean square error, were used. The results indicate that the proposed method outperformed every forecast horizon when compared with the model without seasonal adjustment with a degree of improvement ranging between 4% to 16% for wave height and 8% to 24% for wave period. Furthermore, the add-and-repeat prediction method is proposed in the study, where, after each prediction, the output of the model is added to the training set to produce a further prediction. The results from the proposed method indicate that predicted values follow the general trend to a great extent and there is a very small loss of accuracy between the first and final predictions with the R-value reducing from 0.73 to 0.69 for wave height, and 0.63 to 0.61 for wave period.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to develop a model that identifies factors, particularly those involving technology, that influence food security among wheat farmers in East Azerbaijan province in Iran. This study involves the participation of 110 wheat growers in the province. A questionnaire was used to gather data, and expert opinion confirmed its validity. The questionnaire’s reliability was also confirmed by the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (0.724–0.949). The results indicated that most wheat farmers viewed the level of food security as low (57.5%). Goodness-of-fit indexes [e.g., chi-square (P > 0.05), RMSEA < 0.024, and GFI = 0.816] showed that the model had an excellent fit for the data. Regression analysis revealed that the most significant factors were related to the profitability of adopting wheat technology (0.621), its impact on improving food security, and the concept of capacity building (0.491).","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"328 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper employed an experimental design and utilised a sample of 35 students using an online questionnaire through a Google form validated by experts in educational research. Based on the analysis of their responses, the findings revealed that the respondents are fully aware of the harmful effects of marine and coastal pollution on human lives. It is imperative to prevent the proliferation of plastic products in the environment, even if it means sacrificing something to slow down marine and coastal pollution. Also, students agreed that there is a need for awareness that despite the continual contamination of rivers and oceans, nature’s purifying processes soon return to normal when they have good management. The paper concluded that even with the awareness of marine and coastal pollution, there is still a lack of understanding of the holistic consequences of marine plastic and the resulting impact on ecosystem services, as well as the implications for human health, society, and the economy. It is limited to a small sample size, quantitative data and simple statistical tools of frequency and percentages and recommended that an approach such as design thinking focusing on marine and coastal pollution could be used in schools and the government needs to introduce harsh measures to halt marine and coastal pollution since very few people will regulate themselves.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study compares the population densities of each species within urban and sub-urban areas between Kuching and Kota Samarahan. It was found that Javan Myna and Common Myna populations are concentrated in Pending with population densities of 12.9 ind/ha and 13.3 ind/ha, respectively. The Asian Glossy Starling was found to occupy heavily populated areas in Waterfront and the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak campus, with a population density of 15.0 ind/ha at both sites. We also studied the nesting density and habitat requirements of these species. The highest record of nesting density for the Common Myna (0.8 nests/ha) and Javan Myna (0.7 nests/ha) is in Pending, while the Asian Glossy Starling (2.6 nests/ha) is in Waterfront. The following microhabitat variables influenced the birds’ nest site selection: i) nest distance from garbage bins; ii) nest distance from shrubs and grass; and iii) nest distance from trees. Additionally, the data indicated that the birds had a strong preference for nesting in artificial structures. The Common Myna (25%) chose to nest inside air vents, whereas the Javan Myna (29.63%) and Asian Glossy Starling (51.95%) preferred to nest in holes and cavities.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Sarawak Inland Water Transport System (IWTS) has become an essential tool for its residents due to its geographical location. They have access to basic facilities along the rivers’ tributaries through their water transportation. Currently, undeveloped IWTS in the Rajang River has become a navigation safety issue depending on the type of vessel, with insufficient navigational aid installed in certain areas. The nature of the inadequacy of navigation safety can be daunting as it can lead to loss of life, damage to the environment, disruption of operations, injuries, and a long-term environmental impact, often causing severe consequences. This study assessed navigational safety on the Rajang River and recommended appropriate improvements based on the most recent specification requirements of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) (IALA, 2009). The 3D area simulation of navigation marks will be developed using Sketch-Up Software based on satellite image data. The data was then analysed using Risk Assessment (Fuzzy-AHP technique) to propose the most appropriate aids for navigation and their placement. The proposal and design of aids in navigation for Tanjung Rajang River will increase safety and security for the shipping industry, increase turnaround time, and help maintain a zeroaccident rate.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, unsustainable logging method has led to the decline of soil fertility in the forest. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of different logging methods on the soil’s physical and chemical properties at Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia. The logging treatments were supervised logging with climber cutting (SLCC) and conventional logging (CL), and a virgin forest (VF) was used as the control plot. The size for each plot was one hectare and each was replicated into four plots making the total plots 12. Soil sampling was done at four depths (0–10 cm, 10–20 cm, 20–50 cm, and 50–100 cm) for soil analysis and bulk density. The finding shows that the soil properties in the treatment plots were not significantly different from the untreated plot. The soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and total carbon decreased with soil depths. The soil in all study areas was found acidic, ranging from 4.12 to 4.46. The soil textures were clay, sandy clay loam, and sandy loam. The SLCC plot recorded a higher mean of soil organic matter (5.93–7.40%), total phosphorus (0.08–0.09 meq/100 g), and cation exchange capacity (5.69–7.05 meq/100 g) compared to other plots. However, the river is polluted by B3 heavy metals, which pose a significant health risk and may cause death. The presence of these metals in the river is due to the high activity of the community in using it to fulfil their daily needs. This study was preceded by a survey to assess the condition of the Arbes River and the activities of the surrounding community. Water samples were analysed for B3 heavy metal content, specifically lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and mercury (Hg), and the potential of P. stratiotes, L. flava and H. verticillata as phytoremediator agents were analysed. The results showed that the water quality of the Arbes River, as measured by B3 heavy metal content in six segments, exceeded classes III and IV quality standards, making it unsuitable for drinking but potentially suitable for irrigation purposes. Aquatic plants can be used to remediate the B3 heavy metal content in the Arbes River, with H. verticillata demonstrating better remediation potential for lead, cadmium, chromium, and mercury than L. flava and P. stratiotes. Consequently, H. verticillata shows promise as a potential phytoremediator agent for remediating B3 heavy metals in the water of Arbes River.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anophthalmic patients aged 18 years and above who visited the optometry clinic in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, for prosthetic eye fitting participated in this study. Refraction and visual acuity (VA) of the remaining eye were examined using subjective refraction and the Snellen chart, accordingly. The National Eye Institute’s 25-item Visual Functions Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was used to determine the emotional well-being and social functions of the patients. The results were analysed using the Pearson chi-square model. A total of 23 patients participated in this study, with 52.2% of them being emmetrope, 30.4% myope and 17.4% hyperope. Their mean VA was 6/6. The mean score of NEI VFQ-25 was 67.8 ± 2.8 (score ranged: 47.5 to 93.5). The analysis revealed significant reduction in NEI VFQ-25 score for all patients [95% CI: 64.22 to 74.44, p = 0.04]. However, there is no significant association between VA of the remaining eye and the NEI VFQ-25 score (p=0.24). This study concludes that the emotional well-being and social functions of the anophthalmic patients is low, but the score is not associated with the visual status of the remaining eye.","PeriodicalId":17041,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF SUSTAINABILITY SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
