We verify that such dynamics, though peculiar, come from a true material response rather than experimental artifacts. We also reveal how this long-time stress decay is associated with antithixotropic structural change rather than viscoelastic stress relaxation by using orthogonal superposition (OSP) rheometry to probe viscoelastic moduli during the step-down tests. The orthogonal storage and loss moduli are present, showing this two-timescale recovery then decay response, which demonstrates that this response is antithixotropic, and it involves shear-induced structuring. We further show a mechanical anisotropy in the CB suspension under shear using OSP. Based on the rheological results, a microstructural schematic is proposed, considering qualitatively thixotropic structure build-up, antithixotropic densification, and anisotropic structure evolution. Our observation for these CB suspensions is outside the standard paradigm of thixotropic structure-parameter models, and the elastic response provides us with new insight into the transient dynamics of CB suspensions.","PeriodicalId":16991,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Rheology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2022-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47983488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instrum. 66, 5019 (1995)] is a rheometric technique developed to measure the complex shear modulus of viscous liquids near their glass transition temperature. We report recent advances to the PSG technique: (1) The data extraction procedure is optimized, which extends the upper limit of the frequency range of the method to between 50 and 70 kHz. (2) The measuring cell is simplified to use only one piezoelectric ceramic disk instead of three. We present an implementation of this design intended for liquid samples. Data obtained with this design revealed that a soft extra spacer is necessary to allow for thermal contraction of the sample in the axial direction. Model calculations show that flow in the radial direction is hindered by the confined geometry of the cell when the liquid becomes viscous upon cooling. The method is especially well-suited for—but not limited to—glassy materials.","PeriodicalId":16991,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Rheology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48864035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The universality of their static and dynamic properties, as a function of solvent quality [Formula: see text] in the thermal crossover regime between [Formula: see text] and athermal solvents, is studied here using Brownian dynamics simulations. The universal ratio [Formula: see text] of the radius of gyration [Formula: see text] to the hydrodynamic radius [Formula: see text] is determined, and a comparative study of the swelling ratio [Formula: see text] of the radius of gyration, the swelling ratio [Formula: see text] of the hydrodynamic radius, and the swelling ratio [Formula: see text] of the mean polymer stretch [Formula: see text] along the [Formula: see text]-axis, for linear and ring polymers, is carried out. The ratio [Formula: see text] for dilute ring polymer solutions is found to converge asymptotically to a constant value as [Formula: see text], which is a major difference from the behavior of solutions of linear chains, where no such asymptotic limit exists. Additionally, the ratio of the mean stretch along the [Formula: see text]-axis to the hydrodynamic radius, [Formula: see text], is found to be independent of [Formula: see text] for polymeric rings, unlike in the case for linear polymers. These results indicate a fundamental difference in the scaling of static and dynamic properties of rings and linear chains in the thermal crossover regime.","PeriodicalId":16991,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Rheology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41947846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three sets of wormlike micellar solutions, each set with a similar fluid elasticity and zero-shear-rate viscosity, but with varying entanglement densities, are studied under the startup of steady shear. Our experiments indicate that in the set with low fluid elasticity, the transient shear banding flow is characterized by the formation of a transient flow reversal in a range of entanglement densities. Outside of this range, the transient flow reversal is not observed. For the sets of medium and high elasticities, the transient flow reversals exist for relatively small entanglement densities and disappear for large entanglement densities. Our analysis shows that wall slip and elastic instabilities do not affect the transient flow feature. We identify a correlation between micellar entanglement number, the width of the stress plateau, and the extent of the transient flow reversal. As the micellar entanglement number increases, the width of the stress plateau first increases; then, at a higher micellar entanglement number, the plateau width decreases. Therefore, we hypothesize that the transient flow reversal is connected to the micellar entanglement number through the width of the stress plateau.","PeriodicalId":16991,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Rheology","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":3.3,"publicationDate":"2022-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47828661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
