CSI's goal of working alongside Haitian, South Sudanese, Nigerian, and Cameroonian villagers through a franchisee model of off-grid SunBlazer charging stations does its best with the logical side, and is coming to appreciate the illogical attributes of applied humanitarian service and learning. Further refinement of its design for off-grid communities and its grasp of local supply and value chain economics is a basis for further incubation/design, scientific demonstration of engineering and economic models, and education that connects the weak ties - that is communities of learning to other communities of learning.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125286101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of wood fuel is associated with the use of inefficient stoves that increase health and environmental impacts and poverty. This project aimed to propose use of biogas from anaerobic digestion as an alternative cooking technique for households using wood fuel in Zambia. Biogas is not only an important part of household cooking technique alternative, but also an important aspect of development of rural new energy and sustainable development in Zambia. The use of biogas will help in reducing the time spent on collecting firewood, costs on purchasing charcoal and fossil fuel, improve poor people's living standards, more time in farm productivity and more children will have time for school. This paper also reviews the current situation in Zambia and what needs to be done by the government in order to win people's confidence in developing biogas plants. More experimental researches in biogas technology need to be undertaken in Zambia. There is need for government to welcome different models so that people are free to use what is beneficial to them provided it meets their requirements and to do research to make it affordable.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125175961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the renewable off-grid technologies, micro and small hydropower often matches local conditions. Nevertheless in order to accomplish reliable and affordable off-grid electrification, techno-economic analyses play a pivotal role. In this paper we describe the model that we developed for assessing the techno-economic feasibility of run-of-river small hydropower plant (up to 2MW) for rural areas in Tanzania. The model makes use of river and load data to generate an optimization of the installed electrical power and to perform an economic analysis of the investment. The capability to search for the best power size while evaluating draft designs and the implementation of Tanzanian-tailored cost functions, make the model useful for the purposes of identifying small-hydropower sites. Application to two real field cases complete the validation of the model.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117178606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the unique nature of online instruction requires that we investigate new methods of engaging students. This paper proposes several methods of engaging the learner through the online format. Most of the methods are relatively simple to implement and include phone calls, use of e-mails, announcements, avatars and an online Office. The paper also proposes focused, purposeful use of the learning management system's synchronous interactive online instruction features by engaging in live instructional discussions with students centered on difficult course concepts.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124161097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CSI vision emulates the goals of many like-minded groups of building bottom-up community prosperity through training and empowering local entrepreneurs to manage profitable businesses capable of growing to serve a million people in the first 5 years of operation. A successful business and technology model has been demonstrated at a seed funding level in Haiti and now is striving to attract further investment from both aid agencies and Social investment venture capitalists to expand marketing and production to full scale. The first initiative in Haiti is now three years old and new initiatives in Nigeria, Cameroon and South Sudan started in July 2012. In addition, CSI with a growing list of partners is dedicated to leveraging basic electricity to support a variety of uses including interconnectivity and interactive web-based affordable education at many levels in off-grid areas. Further incubation of technology, business and education models is also being pursued in collaboration with sustainable development NGOs committed to enabling the 1.4 billion at the economic Base of the Pyramid (BOP).","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131662228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The distribution network is prone to losses more when compared to the generating and transmission system. So it is important to prevent the power losses and to improve the quality of the power supply, the traditional feeder terminal unit is converted to intelligent electrical device. First the design of smart distribution network is presented. Then the module of intelligent electrical device is designed and its functions and characteristics are described. Then the two relay protection algorithm used in intelligent electrical device is proposed. To ensure the continuity of the power supply the smart distribution network is connected in ring main distribution system. Next, the algorithm for fault detection, location, fault isolation and power restoration based on the information interaction and self-healing process of intelligent electrical device for the smart distribution grid is proposed. The automation system made the synchronisation of the power from all the sources. So when energy from all the sources are integrated in smart grid, the efficiency of the system increases. But the power demand and power theft in the smart distribution network still remains. Thus finally, the indication for preventing power demand and power theft is presented. Through the information interaction and self-healing process of intelligent electrical device, the quality and continuity of power supply is ensured to all the consumers and industries.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133462267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study assessed the risk of acute diarrheal disease by conducting cross sectional survey in 290 households. The study subject was 0–12 years age group children, the information on socio-economic and sanitation condition were gathered from mother of the child. Based on the indicators the sanitation quality index was evaluated to study the sanitation condition of the household. The study showed that the education of mother and socio-economic status played a major role in the diarrheal prevalence. The results of this study clearly show that household socio-economic condition was closely related to the better sanitary conditions and water supply which are the significant determinants of diarrhea occurrence.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115403234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system design is based on use of a radio beacon. Rescue worker activates the beacon in a case of saving actions remotely. The operating distance of the system should be up to hundred meters. Taking into account the operating wave-length in 3 km, the proper operation of any antenna at such frequency and at such distance is impossible. The near-field zone must be considered. The antenna pattern is not formed in this zone and the loop antenna can not be used for the solving of classical task of navigation with the pattern minimum. The use of inductance coils for signal reception and signal transmitting is offered. In this case due to the mutual induction between the coils it is possible to establish the communication and it is possible to estimate the distance up to object of search. Rescue workers by means of searching devices determine the position of people under/behind the avalanches.","PeriodicalId":168082,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference (GHTC)","volume":"795 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123908677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
