This paper investigates the effect of injection duration and ambient pressure on spray development, spray tip penetration (L) and cone angle ( β ) of biodiesel-diesel (20%/80%:v/v) blend (B20) and diesel, and hence compares the quality of the fuels. Both ‘L’ and ‘ β ’ play a key role in the fuel evaporation and mixing of fuel with air in the combustion chamber. It was found that the injection pressure, spray tip penetration and cone angle of the fuels increased with the increase in injection duration. Furthermore, the injection pressure of B20 was higher than that of diesel because of its higher incompressibility, which increased the droplet momentum and tip penetration. The ambient pressure displayed a stronger impact on ‘L’ and ‘ β ’ of the fuels, compared with injection duration. The ‘L’ was increased, while ‘ β ’ decreased with the decrease in P  amb due to the decrease in resistance to penetration velocity. The shapes of spray images of two fuels were almost similar. However, B20 exhibited larger ‘L’ and ‘ β ’ due to higher initial velocity and mass of droplet, compared with diesel. This indicates that relative to diesel fuel, B20 has a stronger impact on the spray performance, and thus improves both ‘L’ and ‘ β ’. During the earlier phase of time after start of injection, the relative difference between two fuels in terms of their spray tip penetration was smaller. This difference augmented, and then became roughly stable. Before the commencement of a comparatively steady phase of time after the start of injection, the test fuels revealed an appreciable relative difference in terms of their ‘ β ’.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121704391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two sets of fabrics were prepared in this study: one with simultaneous increase in ends and picks and another with increasing number of picks /25mm while keeping the ends/25mm constant. Subsequently, the effect of increase in ends and picks was evaluated in quantitative terms. It was concluded that the tensile strength of a fabric is increased in both directions when fabric count is increased either in one direction or in both directions. However, the increase in tensile strength with increase in fabric count is not strictly linear. The higher the fabric count, the better is the transfer efficiency of yarn strength into fabric strength.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131463395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cutting forces are measured using Kistler lathe tool dynamometer, first using PVD coated inserts and then CVD+PVD coated inserts. The flank wear of these inserts is observed by machining Ramax-2 at the optimum parameters. The surface finish is also measured with portable surface roughness meter. The results shows that Ramax-2 can be economically cut if CVD+PVD coated inserts are used. The tool life with CVD+PVD coated inserts is found higher as compared to PVD coated inserts, although the surface roughness and cutting forces are almost the same for both kinds of inserts.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122425671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are one of the tools, which has a very simple and easy application in engineering. The training of ANN is done with trajectory dependent algorithms which normally leads to convergence to local minima and limits its application to complex engineering problems. In this paper, a hybrid methodology is proposed where traditional training algorithm in Feedforward Back Error Propagation (BEP) ANN is replaced with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to optimize weights and biases for the ANN and a comprehensive search algorithm to find the optimum number of neurons in the hidden layer(s). The methodology has been applied to an example of a scheduling policy system for flexible manufacturing systems and the results for traditional and hybrid ANN have been compared.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125697836","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The operational scheduling encompasses a wide range of scheduling models and many attempts have been made to solve them using analytical, heuristic and artificial intelligence based approaches but no robust solution is yet available to tackle the diverse range of scheduling models. Recent trend shows that Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based solutions are popular because of their suitability to the combinatorial nature of the scheduling problem. In this paper, a GA-based scheduling system is presented where a novel combination of recently introduced crossover scheme for job based chromosome representation with Stochastic Universal Selection (SUS), simple mutation of exchange of genes and a heuristic for evaluation of chromosomes is proposed which is easy to code and robust enough to deal with flow shop as well as job shop scheduling problem. The system is validated through case studies from real world scheduling problems.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128672385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It involves targeted modification of the genetic material of plants, crops etc. to develop new varieties. The edible products are called as genetically modified (GM) foods. Despite the apparent enormous benefits of GM foods, the technology is surrounded by controversy. Benefits include: increased crop yields through improvement in insect, pest, disease resistance and extreme weather tolerance/resistance of crops; improved nutritional quality and longer fruit and vegetable shelf-life. Some of the fears expressed regarding GM foods include potential toxicity; possible antibiotic resistance; possible allergic and carcinogenic effects; possible creation of new viruses; unintentional gene transfer to wild plants; limited access to seeds due to patenting of GM food plants; threat to crop genetic diversity besides cultural, religious and ethical concerns as well as fear of unknown. This paper briefly reviews potential risks and benefits of the new technology to the man and the environment. The government stance and public attitude towards GM foods along with genetic modification of foods and crops in Pakistan have also been focused.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133401667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It allows a mobile robot to safely navigate and perform tasks. In this paper we present an approach for localizing and mapping multiple robots/objects within the indoor environment. Each of these robots has an on- board PC and wireless communication facility to communicate with a centralized computing server. Wall mounted camera network, with capability to observe the work space, is connected with a computing server. Computing server localizes the robots/objects on 2-D ground plane which calculates the mobility factor occupancy value (OV) for grid cells. Occupancy grid based map is used for the environment description. Fuzzy rules are applied to strengthen the confidence of cell occupancy. OV grid based map limits the localization process to region of interest (ROI). The updated map is broadcasted. Camera calibration is performed offline. Robots of the environment update their positions and path planning based on the received map and the dead reckoning sensory feed back. The use of multiple camera system also helps in solving the occlusion problem","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122185266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review paper includes a detailed discussion on different aspects of wastewater treatment process modeling considering white-box and black-box modeling techniques. Initially basic model steps are discussed for the better understanding of modeling concepts. Basic Activated Sludge Models (ASM) developed by International Water Association (IWA) task group are contributing considerably in wastewater treatment modeling. Different factors related to the model performance like model selection, model functions and model calibration are discussed in detail. The applications of ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d, ASM3, ASM3_2N, ASM3 bio-P model etc. are also studied. The white-box modeling techniques in this area are more significant. The importance of black-box models under special conditions where white-box models are not able to predict accurate results are also investigated. It was also found that use of hybrid, linearization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in wastewater treatment modeling can be more useful for process optimization and control.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132911570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Untreated effluent from communal and industrial sectors is seriously damaging the surface water quality in Ravi River. Analyses of effluent from Lahore city was showing very high rate of pollutants. During the investigation period the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD-5) of effluent had been increased from 410 mg/L to 495 mg/L, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from 815 mg/L to 870 mg/L and Total Solids (TS) from 1280 mg/L to 1400 mg/L. This might be due to the fact that there is a rapid growth of urbanization in Lahore City and the municipality conditions are becoming worse day by day. Samples were also collected from selected location along river and as well as groundwater reservoir in the study area. Collected samples were analyzed for different water quality parameters like pH, Total Dissolve Salts (TDS), Electric Conductivity (EC), temperature, hardness, magnesium, calcium, chloride, sulfate etc. Laboratory results of these analyses from selected locations indicates that low flow conditions in Ravi River along with high rate of contaminants are also damaging the ground water sources in the study area. Investigations show that unhygienic condition of Ravi River is seriously increasing the negative impacts on surrounding environment and aquatic life of the river. Proper treatment of communal and industrial wastewater is necessary to improve the surface and ground water conditions in the area studied.","PeriodicalId":167225,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130550582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
