Stevenson captured a specific kind of trauma. However, group responses to his generous insights show that something important also happens to recipients of his insights. In groups, people listening want to identify with him and to join him to a point of drowning him out. These acts of joining, ‘me too’, ‘yes, butting’ and ‘whataboutery’ show that it is deeply uncomfortable to hear someone else’s painful experiences, take them in and not respond immediately. A group discussion at the Group Analysis North Barbara Dick Lecture where Stevenson presented his paper came to the clear conclusion that the best response to hearing painful experiences is simply ‘Yes’. Simply listening to the story of the ‘other’ opens up a painful place that is also enriching and empowering. This is the nature of intersectionality.","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127010907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He suggests that for many people the experience is nothing short of traumatic, the impact of which can have lasting and corrosive effects. The explicit linking of the homosexual experience to trauma is relatively new in the literature and commands the readership of all those who not only share this experience themselves but psychotherapists and others who ‘treat’ gay people, as well as trainers and educators. The paper is a reminder that while there appears to have been considerably greater social acceptance of homosexuality in recent decades, there remains widespread prejudice and discomfort about homosexuality in sections of society, reflected in continuing pockets of rejection and repudiation. A telling example is the visit in May 2022 to the UK of Franklin Graham, the American evangelist preacher, son of the famous Billy Graham, who takes a strong, vocal anti-homosexuality stand on the grounds that it is an unquestionable sin in the name of God. Although Graham was allowed access to the UK on condition that he tempered his public statements, the fact that he was allowed to visit and received the overwhelming support of many thousands of followers, reflects either shared intolerance or turning a blind eye to the problem. While there is now a very substantial, open gay community at various levels of society, often making valuable contributions in all spheres of life, many homosexuals 1136068 GAQ0010.1177/05333164221136068Group AnalysisNitsun: Response to Stevenson research-article2022","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"65 11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128354078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What is novel about this book is that it reads not like the usual collection of essays, where different authors have contributed chapters to a shared and overarching theme. Instead, it reads like a collection of scientific papers, that would perhaps be more at home in a journal. For an avid book reader, it takes time and effort to get used to this format.The achievement of the book is that it resists simply focusing on the leader’s personality traits or psychiatric symptoms. Throughout the book, the context, the followers and the leader are considered as connected. It was very pleasing for me, as an ex-associate at a business school, to get away from the leadership industry. Meaning, no fashionable movements like mindfulness, emotional intelligence, cha-risma or hero worship are pushed down the reader’s throat in this book. Nor is the ‘unholy trinity’ of strategy, permanent change and transformative leadership at the core of the contributions. A development which two colleagues and I castigated in a recent book called Breaking Free of the Bonkers (Binney, Glanfield and Wilke, 2017). In the same book we pointed out something important that is missing from the book under review: in a context of permanent transition in organizations, leadership is almost impossible, due to the obsessive defence against the chaos — micro-man-agement and controlling. In part one of the book, the reader is presented with a helpful summary of different ways of thinking about leadership and the underlying philosophy of the editors. They argue that leadership is context bound and therefore different situations and organizations require different qualities and skills from a leader. Equally, the examination of leaders requires an inter-disciplinary approach, if","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124426656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is structured as a theoretical and practical reflection. After a preliminary general discussion on the statute of the task for both Pichon-Rivière and Foulkes, we propose and discuss three practical developments from Pichon-Rivière’s conception of task. The three developments are: 1) The task as a leader: its value in dealing with identity issues; 2) How centring on the task can moderate the transference towards the conductor; 3) Respecting narcissistic envelopes with tasked-centred interventions. It concludes by reaffirming that all three discussed elements are helpful when taking groups outside the consulting room—and yet that they also contribute to approach what Pichon-Rivière called the moment of a task as a potential moment in the sense of Donald Winnicott.","PeriodicalId":166668,"journal":{"name":"Group Analysis","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131384233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
