Gustavsson","doi":"10.1109/REV.2012.6293149","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/REV.2012.6293149","url":null,"abstract":"Remote Laboratories are an emergent technological and pedagogical tool at all education levels, and their widespread use is an important part of their own improvement and evolution. This paper describes several issues encountered on laboratorial classes, on higher education courses, when using remote laboratories based on PXI systems, either using the VISIR system or an alternate in-house solution. Three main issues are presented and explained, all reported by teachers that gave support to students use of remote laboratories. The first issue deals with the need to allow students to select the actual place where an ammeter is to be inserted on electric circuits, even incorrectly, therefore emulating real world difficulties. The second one deals with problems with timing when several measurements are required at short intervals, as in the discharge cycle of a capacitor. And the last issue deals with the use of a multimeter in DC mode when reading AC values, a use that collides with the lab settings. All scenarios are presented and discussed including the solution found for each case. Users in the workplace can access remote laboratories without having to travel. This flexibility is important for teleworking, education and lifelong learning. The implementation and maintenance of online labs is expensive and partially associated with high administrative efforts. These are reasons, why sharing online lab resources via different universities worldwide is a current necessity. Therefore we started at the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences together with partners a project to establish a network of interconnected online laboratories in Europe and, in a second stage, worldwide. This network is based on MIT's iLab Shared Architecture (ISA). This came up after experiencing the limitations on using NI ELVIS II+ platform in deploying discrete experiments using common measuring and testing instruments; as well as the use of different components on the same experimental setup. This requires switching mechanisms as a solution to implement those experiments. The designed mechanism in this work uses analogue switching devices with digital control inputs connected to the NI ELVIS II+ Digital writer instrument. A program was developed, which connects a PC and the haptic device using FireWire protocol, and by TCP/IP protocol with a KUKA KR 5 robot. This program's package also influences the movements of a robot and executes the program by signal processing. It enables an exchange of data between the robot controller and outside peripherials in real-time using Ethernet. The information between the server and a client is transferred in the form of a XML file. The emphasis of the presented paper is dedicated to the developement of the program's interface, which can be devided into three segments: the server program which runs on a PC and connects the PC with the haptic device using FireWire protocol, the developement of the client program, which runs on a robot computer (KRC Kuka Robot Controller) and a subprogram that runs on the server and connects the haptic device with a server. These laboratories enable students to use real equipment located in the university from the Internet. This way, students can extend their personal learning experience by testing with real equipment what they are studying at home, or performing hands-on-lab sessions at night, on weekends or whenever the traditional laboratories are physically closed. A unique feature of remote laboratories when compared to traditional laboratories is that the distance of the student is not an issue, so remote laboratories can be shared with other schools or universities. In this contribution, authors present and discuss a widely spread remote laboratory (VISIR, present in 6 european universities + 1 in India) shared among 3 institutions (2 universities + 1 high school). The RESTlabs architecture uses the concept of self-describing APIs to provide discoverability of capabilities and the replacement of bespoke code with code generated from machine-readable designs. The prototype currently under development allows experiment services within the Lab Server to be generated from a design specification. This mirrors the existing capability in the RESTlabs client to generate an Experiment User Interface (UI) from a design specification retrieved from the Lab Server. Plans for an Experiment Service Designer as a component of the Lab Server, along similar lines to the Experiment UI Designer component in the RESTlabs client, are described.
