In this paper, in which I focus mostly on Brazil as a paradigmatic case, I defend that the pandemic is exposing the fragility of the state (not just of its institutions, but of its very idea) in this macro-region and in Brazil in particular, and may therefore have a negative impact not only on the health of the citizens and on the national economies, but also on the social fabric at large. The paper discusses, first, the situation in South America at large and, second, the politicization of the crisis provoked by the Brazilian president Bolsonaro and his followers. After presenting the economic measures taken by the Brazilian government and the popular reaction, I will offer comments on the weakness of the state and on the lack of national and international solidarity in Brazil and in South America.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126498605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A specificity of the Muslim world is the reaction of Islamic institutions. First, because of the danger of mass public gatherings, and secondly because of the legitimation role Islamic institutions play for many states in the Muslim world who dispose of a weaker infrastructural power or public or feeble public trust. If most religious institutions have responded in a supportive way and limited public rituals, the pandemics shifts power relations be-tween state and religion and also alters the perceived superior kind of public rationality. The article offers a short overview on the state of the pandemics, the responses to it and discusses the political and discursive effects it may have.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"8 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124281314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, it focuses on six dimensions of the COVID-19 (coro-navirus) pandemic in various macro-regions of the world. First, it identifies global risks and their consequences. Second, it address-es social issues of solidarity, fear and injustice in struggles for survival and social recognition in intersubjective relations. Third, it maps a quick process of establishment of boundaries, breaking international and transnational interactions and also fragmenting countries into smaller units according to the outbreak. Fourth, it analyses the main different approaches of public institutions to the pandemic in different parts of the world. Fifth, it articulates scenarios of possible future development. Sixth, it formulates a new reconfiguration of global forces, including possible economic, political and other conflicts. In the end, the article touches a problem of racism and xenophobia in the pandemic times, and sees positive possibilities of mutual understanding and cooperation.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128347369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What Will Be the Consequences of Lockdown for the Indian Society? Philosophica , vol. 6, 2020, no. 1, In terms of public health, India‘s lockdown in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus can be assessed as a right step that helped not overload the Indian healthcare system. On the other hand, it be-comes clear that the side effects of the lockdown will pose a much greater challenge for the Indian society than the coronavirus itself. As the lockdown has been extended, the slowdown of the Indian economy and its severe impact on the informal migrating workers seems inevitable. At the same time, Indian polity experiences an-other spike of tensions between the religious communities, and a widening gap between the middle and working classes.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"305 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122964002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach has been inspired by the works of later L. Wittgenstein. I attempt to reach the outlined objective in two steps. In the first step, I will focus on how mathematics actually becomes a philosophical problem. The second step will consist in introducing a normative understanding of mathematics, and in particular its core: the normative account of mathematical propositions. I will try to answer the question of what it means to understand mathematical propositions as rules and I will emphasize the naturalness and productivity of this understanding. The forthcoming second part of the paper will contain responses to several standard objections to the normative conception of mathematics.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129084676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Dialectic of Identity, Alterity, Recognition and the Limits of Principle” deals with a problem which has achieved significant attention from the scientific literature of today (psychology, social psychology, sociol-ogy), media, the public, but also of course philosophy and philosophical anthropology: on the question of a person’s identity and self-identification. It provides a partial overview of the different approaches to identity from various fields and comes to terms with crucial issues of national and cultural identity in its critique. The author concludes the study with the statement that the problem of identity often tends to be overestimated for political rather than scientific and philosophical reasons, something which often de-scends into the legitimisation of nationalism.","PeriodicalId":166511,"journal":{"name":"Philosophica Critica","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134215070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
