The Well Phone interfaces various health monitoring devices to the smartphone, and collects physiological data from those devices. It employs novel algorithms that perform statistical analyses, relate sequences of disparate measurements from different devices, and correlate physical activity with physiological measurements. The Well Phone provides feedback to the user by means of visualization and speech interaction, and alerts a caregiver, medical professional, or emergency responder, as needed.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115323385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, the optimization of the HTTP protocol is considered a mainstream method to achieve maximum generality Web acceleration. Among the optimization techniques, HTTP pipelining technology optimizes the traditional mechanisms of HTTP protocol interaction, resulting in a dramatic improvement in page load time. In this paper, the formulae for calculating page load time under four kinds of HTTP request contrast mechanisms were deduced by mathematical modeling. Then in order to accurately assess the impact of pipelining mechanism for web browsing optimization, the simulation of network protocol is carried out with different network environments and page features. Finally based on these results, some recommendations of HTTP pipelining configuration under different conditions are given.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114391931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing Semantic Web reasoners are currently impractical for SWoT, as they are resource consuming and optimized for standard inference tasks on large ontologies. On the contrary, SWoT use cases generally require quick resource discovery and decision support through semantic matchmaking in low CPU/memory and battery-powered devices. This paper presents a novel mobile inference engine designed from the ground up for the SWoT. It supports Semantic Web technologies and implements both standard (subsumption, satisfiability, classification) and non-standard (abduction, contraction, covering) inference services for moderately expressive knowledge bases. In addition to an architectural and functional description, a case study is presented in the ubiquitous Semantic Web and a performance evaluation is provided on a smartphone testbed.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116057987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, recent events show that these services do not achieve the claimed functionality supporting truly self-destructing messages. In this paper, we address the problem of privacy protection in ephemeral communications involving untrusted service providers. We present SecureSnaps, a forward secrecy cryptosystem with self-destructing messages. In this system, we introduce a trusted module supervised by a trusted third party in order to ensure the security of user's private keys, so that untrusted service providers cannot access the communications among users. We take a new approach, called cryptographic counting control, to implement message's self-destruction functionality which meets the requirement for forward secrecy. By adopting this approach, no one, including the original sender, service provider, and key management module, can recover past messages once these messages have entered the \"destroyed state\". We prove that the proposed scheme is provably secure against chosen plaintext attacks. Our experiment results demonstrate its efficiency and practicality for large-size group of users.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124204222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can be used to increase the efficiency during the development cycle of mobile applications. Although it is common knowledge that cross-platform tools come with a performance penalty, the size of the overhead is unclear. Our study targets the assessment of two representative cross-platform tools. This paper presents a quantitative performance analysis that is applied to a non-trivial, multi-screen app. Relevant performance properties on both low-end and high-end devices are evaluated and compared to a native Android and iOS implementation. We further reflect about the impact of the results on the user acceptance and experience, and define guidelines for the selection of a particular tool.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131360916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sufficiently large and qualitative longitudinal data sets, which aggregate the individuals' demographic and clinical characteristics, together with their response to specific therapeutic interventions, would therefore facilitate evidence-based treatment suggestions for individual patients. Currently, clinical trials are the standard instrument for realizing evidence-based medicine. However, the related information gathering is limited. For example, clinical trials try to reduce the complexity of the individual case by generating homogeneous groups to obtain significant results. From the latter, individual treatment decisions are inferred. A complementary approach would be to assess the effect of specific interventions in large samples considering the individual peculiarity of each subject. This allows providing individualized treatment decisions. Recently, mobile crowd sensing emerged as an approach for collecting large and ecological valid datasets at rather low costs. By providing mobile crowd sensing services to large numbers of patients, large datasets can be gathered cheaply on a daily basis. In the TrackYourTinnitus project, we implemented a mobile crowd sensing platform to reveal new medical aspects on tinnitus and its treatment. Additionally, we work on mobile services exploring approaches for understanding tinnitus and for improving its diagnostic and therapeutic management. We present the TrackYourTinnitus platform as well as its goals, architecture and preliminary results. Overall, the platform and its mobile services offer promising perspectives for tinnitus research and treatment.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"374 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115969855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with the growth of mobile backend services, it turns to be a more and more challenging process for mobile developers to discover mobile backend services with high return-on-investment (ROI). Due to the unique characteristics of mobile backend services, directly applying existing Web service recommendation solutions for mobile backend services is ineffective. In this paper, we systematically studied and summarized four unique characteristics of mobile backend services. Based on these four unique characteristics, we proposed an extendable recommendation approach for mobile backend services to help mobile developers to efficiently identify what they really need. Through the empirical evaluations that we conducted on hundreds of open mobile backend services, we demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126654166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has led to increased interest in developing of applications across a wide variety of domains including health-care, entertainment, environmental monitoring and transportation, which use sensor feeds to offer services. However, most of these applications require continuous sensing, which places a heavy demand on the device's typically limited battery power. This problem is further amplified as multiple applications attempt to monitor multiple sensors simultaneously. In this paper, we present ShareSens, our approach to opportunistically merge independent sensing requirements of applications. We achieve this using sensing schedulers for sensors, which determine the lowest sensing rate which would satisfy all requests, and then use custom filters to send out only the needed data to each application. Sensing requests made through the ShareSens API (which we have implemented for Android) are forwarded to the relevant schedulers which determine the optimum sensing rates to satisfy all requests. The paper presents the design and implementation of ShareSens, as well as results from our experimental work on the power savings that can be achieved by using it.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128995503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks can be used to access personalized and enterprise data. Moreover, recent launch of consumer devices such as wearable smart watches (e.g., Apple Watch) requires services and products re-alignment. More importantly, sensor capabilities of these mobile devices can be leveraged with desktops and cloud computing facilities to create next generation mobile applications that can be beneficial to enterprises such as health, agriculture, mining and so on. The challenge however is the limited and unstable wireless mediums through which these smart devices communicate. Due to this factor, data transfer can experience challenges such as high latency, data corruption, communication loss, and performance cost in terms of poor throughput. Hence, this work designed a prototypic system using the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) that seeks to provide speed-efficient data exchanges in a mobile-sensor-cloud ecosystem. Furthermore, a group of performance measurement experiments and conducted to understand the proposed system's performance for wireless networks. Preliminary results suggest CoAP can achieve quick I/O data response time.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128797993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Images are often used to locate a place by identifying landmarks. In this work, we present the use of texts in an image to identify a user's location. The key intuition behind this work is that a collection of names of business appearing in an image forms a bag-of-words that provides a unique signature for a location. We use Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to detect the texts from an image. However, use of OCR in outdoor settings is resource intensive, and text detection is often error prone in uncontrolled settings. We develop an algorithm that can handle partial errors in the collection of business names to locate the user. Partial errors in text detection are handled by using similarity scores based on approximate text matching. We also limit the resource usage by partitioning the application between the smartphone and a cloud based web service to save energy. We have implemented the positioning system, called WhereAmI, on Android based smartphone. The experimental results show that WhereAmI can be an alternative positioning technique for GPS in terms of accuracy, precision, energy efficiency and positioning latency.","PeriodicalId":166267,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121579380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
