Material and Methods: Bismuth oxide as a radiopaque component and nano-hydroxyapatite particles were added to white Portland cement at 20% and 5% weight ratio, respectively. Characterization of the prepared cement was done using con-ventional methods. To examine the bioactivity of this new material, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used for the investigation of the rate of calcium ions dissolution in simulated body fluid media. The viability of hDPSCs was assessed by an MTT assay after 1, 3 and 7 days. The odontogenic potential of this substance was evaluated by measuring alkaline phosphatase activity and alizarin red S staining. Results: Based on the bioactivity results, the cement presented high bio-activity, corroborating sufficiently with the calcium release patterns. The cell viability was significantly increased in new root repair ma-terial containing hydroxyapatite nanoparticles after 3 and 7 days (p<0.05). Conclusion: Moreover, alkaline phosphatase activity increased over 7 days in all experimental groups. The new cement containing nano-hydroxyapatite particles could be a good root repair material.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"45 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74805523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among Libyan parents of children aged 1- 7 years old who lived in Malaysia. A 63-items questionnaire was constructed, validated, and pretested. Six hundred self-administered questionnaires were distributed Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22.0. A generalized Linear Model was used to test the possible relationships between KAP scores and different sociodemographic factors. A significant level for all the statistical tests was predetermined at p?0.05. Results: A total of 381 questionnaires were included, of which fathers' responses constituted 189 (49.6%), and mothers' responses constituted 192 (50.4%). Most of the parents exhibited good oral health knowledge (77.2%), positive attitudes (86.4%), and were adherent to good oral health practice (78.7%) with mean values of 10.6 (SD=1.8), 9.5 (SD=1.5), and 7.9 (SD=1.4) respectively. Gender, age, and income had statistically significant relationships (p<0.05) with KAP scores. The majority (81.1%) of parents rated their child's oral health as good. More than one-third of parents (35.7%) perceived no need for dental care, and 18.6% perceived no need to treat the primary teeth as they will be replaced. Conclusion: Good Knowledge and positive attitudes towards oral health are not necessarily translated into favorable practices. The lack of perceived need and low value attributed to primary teeth created barriers to seek dental care services among the majority of surveyed parents. Attention must be directed to behavior change strategies rather than providing oral health education alone to improve the children's oral health outcomes.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"14 4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82878289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: This double-blind clinical trial study was carried out on 60 female candidates for fixed orthodontic treatment referring to the Orthodontic Department of School of Dentistry in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran, during 2015-2016. The subjects were divided into four groups of ibuprofen, LIPUS, placebo, and mock LIPUS. A questionnaire and a rectangular and flexible cubic silicone were given to each patient to record the severity of pain based on the visual analog scale at specified time points (i.e., 2 h, 6 h, at bedtime, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th days after archwire placement) when biting the silicone block with the anterior and posterior teeth and without biting at all. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used in order to compare the pain severity at different time points. Results: The comparison of pain severity at various time points showed that the highest and lowest mean scores of pain were reported at bedtime and seven days after the intervention (p<0.001). In each of the three conditions (i.e., biting the silicone block with the anterior and posterior teeth and without biting the teeth) at six time points (i.e., 2 h, 6 h, at bedtime, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th days following archwire placement), no significant difference was observed in the severity of pain (p>0.05). Material and Methods: Active members of the Colombian Orthodontics Society (SCO) were invited to complete a previously validated survey on the use of Class II and Class III correctors in growing patients. Results: 180 orthodontists responded (80 male, 100 female). The appliances used most frequently in the treatment of Class II malocclusion were Planas indirect tracks (32.78%) and Twin-blocks (30.56%). Facemasks (62.22%) and Progenie plates (25%) were the most prevalent appliances used in the treatment of Class III malocclusions. Regarding treatment timing, 52% of the orthodontists stated that Class II malocclusions must be treated during late mixed dentition or early permanent dentition, 42% stated that treatment for Class III malocclusions sho-uld occur during early mixed dentition. Appliance use and treatment timing were significantly associated with sex (p= 0.034), years of practice (p= 0.025), and area of work (private clinics or public institutions), (p= 0.039). Conclusion: Twin-blocks and Facemask appliances were the preferred appliances for Class II and Class III treatment, respectively, in growing patients. Material and Methods: Diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan for the maxillary sinus were evaluated by eight specialists experienced in dental implant placement. Eight panoramic radiographs (PAN) and CBCT examinations were obtained from five adult patients with a specific clinical need for dental implants. Evaluation was performed first on PAN then, at least 2 weeks later, on CBCT. Residual alveolar ridge height, mucosal thickening, radiographic findings and treatment plan were recorded. The confidence level was evaluated for both diagnostic evaluation and treatment plan. The kappa statistic for intra-observer reproducibility and McNemar test were performed. Results: In the diagnostic evaluation, CBCT showed significant impact on the diagnosis of radiographic findings. Availability of CBCT significantly changed the treatment plan, for less invasive treatment, or no treatment need. Observers had significantly greater confidence when using CBCT than PAN, when indicating presence of mucosal thickening and radiographic findings in the maxillary sinus. In addition, CBCT increased confidence in the treatment plan. Conclusion: The present study suggests that CBCT has an impact on the diagnostic evaluation of radiographic findings in the maxillary sinus and on the decision to place implants, owing to misdiagnosis of pathology and planning of more invasive treatments when using PAN. Availability of CBCT also improves clinician confidence. Further studies at higher levels of diagnostic efficacy should be performed, to justify the use of CBCT, by evaluating the actual treatment performed and its outcome.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"PP 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84299390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its long-term impact on the formation of competencies is debated. Objetive: To evaluate if the sessions of a Journal Club increase the confidence that Dentistry students have in their abilities to critically appraise a clinical trial. Material and Methods: A prospective cohort study that involved 21 students from the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Lima, Peru) who participated in six Journal Club monthly sessions. The sessions involved the analysis and discussion of clinical trials. Confidence to critically appraise an article before and after was assessed using a self-administered scale. Final and baseline scores were analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. Results: Nineteen students finished all the sessions. Scores before the sessions were on average 2.09±1.17, while after the sixth session an average of 3.53±0.26 was obtained (p<0.05). Both males and females had improved scores after the sessions; however, there were no differences between them (p=0.08). The third- and fourth-year students presented significant changes in their scores (p<0.05). Objective: To determine the oral health-related quality of life in adults who received dental care at establishments managed by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare of Paraguay, the School of Dentistry of Universidad Nacional de Asunción, and the “Chacarita” Community Center, in Paraguay, in the first quarter of 2017. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out. The Paraguayan version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14Py) was used. Spearman's correlation, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to relate the impact of oral health with demographic, labor, educational, and clinical variables. Results: 333 subjects participated in the study. The most affected domains were physical pain, psychological distress, and psychological disability. The correlation between OHIP-14Py and DMF-T was positive but poor (r=0.236; p=<0.001). The oral health-related quality of life was significantly lower in subjects with abnormal oral mucosa (p=0.020), presence of TMJ symptoms (p=0.026), need for prostheses (p<0.001), higher level of severity of DMF-T (p<0.001), use of upper (p=0.004) and lower (p<0.001) prostheses, and absence of functional dentition (p<0.001). Conclusion: Primary and secondary preventive measures should be promoted since oral health status can negatively influence people’s quality of life and may even cause total inability to carry out daily activities.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82273619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study was to identify bacterial and fungal species that contribute to oral complications in patients undergoing marrow trans-lantation and compare their susceptibility to various antimicrobial agents before and during the immunosuppression period. Material and Methods: This observational-longitudinal study was performed on 18 patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation from the Oncohematology Ser-vice of Sanatorio Allende (2018/2019), with buccal mucosa swabs before treatment (I) and mid-stage (M), fourteen days after transplantation. The samples were cultured in selective media for Streptococcus and fungal species and a susceptibility study was performed on Müller Hinton agar. Results: At (I), 82.30% of patients were found to be positive for Streptococcus mutans, 11.30% for Streptococcus salivarius, 5.50% for Streptococcus sobrinus and 9.40% grew mixed commensal microorganisms. At (M), 96.60% were positive for Streptococcus mutans and 23.10% for Streptococcus salivarius, without any growth of Streptococcus sobrinus or mixed microorganisms. In (I), a 27.00% incidence of Candida albicans was observed, while in (M) the incidence was 73.00%. The antibiotics to which the microorganisms were most sensitive in (I) were vancomycin (88.80%), amikacin (83.30%), amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (78.00%), ciprofloxacin (77.75%) and azithromycin (66.60%). In (M) sensitivity to amikacin was 92.30%, vancomycin, 76.90%; amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, 38.50%; azithromycin, 23.10%; and ciprofloxacin, 15.40%. A statistically significant prevalence of Streptococcus mutans was observed in comparison to other species. Conclusion: During the immunosuppression period, there was a significant increase in Candida albicans. The antibiotics to which the bacteria were most sensitive were amikacin and, to a lesser extent, vancomycin, showing significant resistance to ciprofloxacin, azithromycin and amoxicillin + clavulanic acid.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"88 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88770553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This in vitro study was sought to compare the removal of the smear layer (RSL) promoted by conventional irrigation (CI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI) with 17% EDTA, by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Material and Methods: Forty single-rooted human mandibular canines were instrumented and randomly assigned to four groups (n=10), according to the irrigation protocol aiming to the RSL: CG (control group) —conventional irrigation with distilled water; CI— conventional irrigation with 17% EDTA; PUI —passive ultrasonic irrigation with 17% EDTA; CUI— continuous ultrasonic irrigation with 17% EDTA. Hemisections from each sample were obtained, and images of each root canal third (cervical, middle and apical) were captured at 1000 X magnification by SEM. Three previously calibrated and blinded evaluators classified the RSL, according to the criteria proposed by Torabinejad et al.: small or no smear layer (all dentinal tubules were clean and open); 2 = moderate smear layer (no smear layer on the surface of root canal, but dentinal tubules contained debris); 3 = dense smear layer (covering practically all dentinal tubules entrances). Statistical analysis was performed by Kruskal-Wallis and Bonferroni tests (p<0.05). Results: Overall, CUI and cervical thirds showed better RSL rates, compared with the other methods and thirds, respectively (p<0.05). More specifically, the cervical thirds showed better results in the CG, CI and PUI groups (p<0.05), whereas the cervical and middle thirds were not significantly different in the CUI group. Conclusion: CUI was the most effective method for the RSL.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72520353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
