Material and Methods: Seventy-two guinea pigs randomly distributed into two groups (A and B) were evaluated in the study. All specimens were fitted with orthodontic appliances to distalize maxillary incisors. Group A was controlled under conditions of oxygen pressures at sea level (150 masl, 157 mm Hg) and Group B under conditions of oxygen pressures at altitude (3405 masl, 107 mm Hg). The clinical (distance between the distal-incisal angles of the maxillary incisors), biochemical (serum alkaline phosphatase), and histopathological characteristics (osteoblast and osteocyte count) were evaluated before placing the orthodontic devices and after 24 and 72 hours. Results: In the clinical evaluation, the distance between the distal-incisal angles of the maxillary incisors, on day one and three, was significantly higher in group B compared to group A (p=0.002 and p=0.001, respectively). In the biochemical evaluation, the level of serum alkaline phosphatase on the first and third days was significantly higher in group B compared to group A (p=0.001 and p=0.001, respectively). In the histopathological evaluation, the osteoblasts and osteocytes count on day one and three was significantly higher in group B compared to group A (p<0.05). Conclusion: Oxygen pressure at high altitude positively influenced orthodontic tooth movement in guinea pigs, improving its clinical, biochemical, and histopathological characteristics.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73128855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their mechanical and physical properties must be adequate for their use and durability. It is therefore vital to assess how their properties are affected by different disinfectants. Aims: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of chemical disinfectants on surface hardness of the acrylic resins. Material and Methods: Forty specimens (65 mm in length, 10 mm in width and 2.5 mm thick) were manufactured from heat cured acrylic resins for hardness testing according to ISO 1567:1999. The study consisted of four main sets according to the disinfectants applied (control, 1% hypochlorite, 4 % chlorhexidine, and Efferdent®) and each set contained ten specimens. All specimens were placed in saline solution at 37°C and incubated for 60 days. Acrylic specimens were then tested by using a hardness tester three times and the average reading was recorded. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 16. The results were analyzed at a significant level (p≤0.05). The ANOVA (analysis of variance) test was used to assess whether there were any significant differences among all groups. The comparisons between means were obtained by using a Tukey test. Results: There was a slight decrease in the mean values of surface hardness after immersing in chemical disinfectants. The chlorhexidine-assigned specimens had the lowest value of mean surface hardness. On the other hand, the control group had the highest mean value. However, there were no significant differences regarding surface hardness among all groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The use of chemical disinfectants slightly decreases the surface hardness of heat-cured acrylic resins.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"102 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79264181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially relevant in vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Objective: To determine how the sociodemographic characteristics of the elderly in a city of Arequipa (Peru) are associated with Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). Material and Methods: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study consisting of 240 older adults, was carried out between October and December of 2019. Sociodemographic characteristics were assessed by means of a questionnaire, while oral health-related quality of life was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). A descriptive analysis was performed to study the distribution of oral health-related quality of life and sociodemographic characteristics. An inferential analysis was performed to determine the association between the study variables. Results: Most of the older adults were aged between 60-65 years (32.1%). Female participants were the most prevalent group accounting for 60.8%; 42.5% had completed secondary education; 45.4% were married; and 46.7% were covered by a Comprehensive Health Insurance system (SIS, for its acronym in Spanish); 42.9% lived in a extended-family household; and more than half of the respondents reported an income below the minimum living wage (64.2%). Most of the older adults perceived that their oral health did not have a negative impact on their quality of life, with excellent (45.4%) and moderate (34.6%) assessments of their oral health-related quality of life. The most affected dimensions were psychological discomfort (84.2%) and functional limitation (72.1%). Age, educational level, marital status, type of insurance, and level of income had a statistically significant relationship with oral health-related quality of life (p<0.05). Conclusion: Most of the sociodemographic characteristics analyzed are indeed related to the perception of older adults in this study as to how oral health impacted their quality of life.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87111900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: A cohort study was developed between April of 2017 and March of 2018 through a register of patients admitted with buccal surgery indication at the San Borja Arriarán hospital, Chile. Results: The incidence of post-surgical complications was 5.8%, with alveolitis being the most frequent. In the bivariate analysis, surgical difficulty was the only intraoperative variable that presented a significant association with the development of post-surgical complications (p<0.05). In the multivariate analysis, no associations were found between intraoperative variables and the development of complications. Conclusion: The concentration of highly complex procedures in professionals with a high level of experience (maxillofacial surgeons) allows low post-surgical complication incidence and prevents intraoperative variables from generating a higher risk of post-surgical complications.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87863867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was applied in the period September 2015-december 2016 by means of an international validated questionnaire in 340 participants (dental teachers: 69, dental students: 193, dentists: 78). The survey addressed several topics related to detection and restorative threshold, preferences of preparation type, restorative materials used and opinions about diagnosis and treatment for dental caries. A descriptive analysis was carried out and Chi square tests were applied to observe statistically significant differences between the study variables. Results: 340 participants were surveyed among teachers who teach cariology, health care dentists, and undergraduate final-year students. Most participants were women (70%). The age mean was higher for DDSs (46 ± 9 years). On average, practicing dentists and dental teachers had a work experience of 21 ± 9 years. In case of treatment decisions, the majority of the surveyed would use immediate operative restorative treatment for advanced carious lesions (inner one-third of the dentin for approximal and grade 5 for occlusal). In addition, respondents reported different cavities diagnosis for clinical occlusal cases and some significant statistically differences were found for restorative treatment decisions and type of materials according to the type of participant. Conclusion: Criteria for diagnosis and treatment of dental caries differed among the student, dentist and dental teachers with variety in diagnosis and treatment concepts. However, a conservative tendency for restorative treatment decisions was observed. Strategies for incorporating non-restorative and minimal measures in professional practice should be considered in curricula of universities.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"50 22","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72390499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to characterize the motivations for studying Dentistry and to identify the associated factors in Cuban students. Material and Methods: A total of 1324 students from nine Cuban universities participated in this cross-sectional, analytic, observational, multicenter and questionnaire-based study. The “Dental Motivation Scale”, a validated test, was used to measure social, altruistic, economic, and prestige motivators. For statistical analysis, frequencies and percentages were described, and generalized linear models were used to establish statistical associations. Results: Sixty six percent of the surveyed students were female and the mean age was 21.2. The students were more motivated to major in Dentistry by their desire to study for constant progress (57%) as well as the possibility of being able to help others (50%). Those who had relatives that were dentists had a lower social/altruistic motivation (studying for constant progress; p=0.004). Family pressure was associated with an increase in economic/prestige motivators: economic security (p=0.001), stable job (p<0.001) and reaching high social status (p<0.001). Conclusion: Students coming from families related to Dentistry were less motivated by social/altruistic aspects. Case Report: Many conditions can complicate the treatment plan and fabrication of a complete denture prosthesis. Complete denture fabrication in clinically compromised conditions is a challenging task for the dentist. In this clinical report, we present comprehensive management of a patient with denture-induced hyperplasia, flabby ridge, and severely resorbed edentulous ridge. The three-part strategy for management of the above-mentioned challenges can provide high-quality complete dentures, based on recognized prosthodontic principles. This first part will discuss the management of denture induced hyperplasia by elimination of the inflammation and excision of the lesion. Part two will cover management of the flabby ridge using a modified window technique for the impression of maxillary flabby tissues for an improved and controlled application of the impression material that is usually obtainable in dental practice. Part three highlights the rehabilitation procedure of the resorbed mandibular ridge using a functional impression technique with minimum soft tissue displacement and neutral zone arrangement of teeth to improve stability of the denture. Conclusion: rehabilitation of a patient with denture induced hyperplasia, flabby ridge, and severely resorbed edentulous ridges was successful.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72975961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of oral Staphylococcus aureus with different body mass index people. Material and Methods: A total of 155 saliva samples were collected. The individuals were grouped into three categories according to their BMI, normal weight, overweight and obese individuals. A loopful of saliva sample was cultured and incubated at 37°C for 24. Staphylococcus aureus isolates were diagnosed by colony characteristics, morphology, and biochemical tests. Results: The oral carriage rate of Staphylococcus aureus was 61.3% (65.1% females and 56.5% males). The Staphylococcus aureus rate was 68% in married and 60% in single people. The differences of oral carriage rates of Staphylococcus aureus in obese (73.6%) and overweight (85.4%) populations was statistically significant (p<0.0001) compared to the rate in normal weight group (34%). Among males, the highest oral carriage rate of Staphylococcus aureus was in overweight individuals (82.6%). Likewise, in females, the highest rate of salivary Staphylococcus aureus was among the overweight group (88.9%). Regarding marital status, in single people, the differences of Staphylococcus aureus in obese (p=0.0003) and overweight (p<0.0001) people was significantly compared to normal weight people. But, in married people, the differences in Staphylococcus aureus rates among all groups were statistically not significant (p=0.0935). Conclusion: Staphylococcus aureus was significantly related to overweight and obese individuals. The human oral Staphylococcus aureus may play a key role in the manifestation of obesity. The oral microbiota could provide a new target for improving the physical well being of humans.","PeriodicalId":16625,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Oral Research","volume":"73 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89894876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
