As an alternative method of treatment, use of medicinal plants in dentistry has recently drawn attention of many dental researchers. The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the anti-bacterial properties of Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum ) and Neem (Azadirachta indica) plants extracts on Streptococcus mutans under in vitro conditions. A total of thirty culture plates per plant including 10 plates per extract served as sample size for the study. The leaves, stems and roots of both the plants were shade dried and powdered and extracted by process of successive extraction. Overnight growth of the test organism in Brain Heart infusion was taken and sub-cultured in Blood Agar. The colonies were transferred to Blood Mueller Hilton (BMH) agar and growth pattern was observed the following morning. Three wells of 6mm diameter each were filled with ten micro-litre of the working suspension of different crude extracts of both Neem and Tulsi with the help of micropipettes. Plates were incubated at 37◦C for 48 hours and zone of inhibitions (ZOI) were measured. The study illustrated the mean values for the zones of inhibition (mm) for Neem to be 25.50mm, 26.60mm and 25.20 mm, respectively and that for Tulsi to be 22.80 mm, 20.40 mm and 21.20 mm, respectively which were significantly greater than that of Cephotaxime","PeriodicalId":16606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88978558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corticosteroids have modernized the treatment protocol of several disease conditions inclusive of many oral diseases. These are strong and effective anti-inflammatory drugs resembling cortisol (inherently formed hormone by the body). Their function is to decrease inflammation, particularly when the body inaccurately activates inflammatory system. Oral and maxillofacial disease may be either local or occur due to the expression of any systemic problem. There are many oral and maxillofacial clinicians who apply the usage of corticosteroids established on their effectiveness to control consequences of any dental procedure or surgery and also to produce and render a contented post-operative period. Hence, the present review highlights and focuses on the pharmacology, uses, contraindications and side-effects of corticosteroids application in oral diseases. © This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.","PeriodicalId":16606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88906363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, to compare the salivary lipid profile within each group statistically. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 samples were taken, 20 in each group. Fasting blood and unstimulated saliva sample collected and the lipid analysis (Total Cholesterol TCHL, Triglycerides TGL, High density lipid cholesterol HDL, Low density lipid cholesterol LDL, very low-density lipid cholesterol VLDL) were done on an autoanalyzer based on spectrophotometric principle. Statistical analysis: Data was evaluated and statistical analysis was done using unpaired student “t” test and Karl Pearson’s correlation. Results: A moderate correlation was found between salivary and serum lipid profile of the study group and control group with exception to LDL. Low lipid profile was observed in the study group in comparison with control group. Conclusion: Saliva can be used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for assessing lipid profile, however diagnostic value of saliva has to be determined in terms of sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility in larger samples and different disease setting. © This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.","PeriodicalId":16606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88666606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term odontoma was first coined by Broca (1866); he defined odontoma as a tumor formed by an overgrowth of complete dental tissues. They can be thought of as “tooth hamartomas” with the lesion consisting of various tooth components. Histologically Odontomas are divided into complex and compound odontomas. In this paper we are describing the case of a complex odontoma in an eight -year-old boy diagnosed due to the retention of the permanent left maxillary central and lateral incisor. A surgical excision was performed without distressing the unerupted central and lateral incisor. The results obtained indicate that early diagnosis of odontomas enables adoption of less complex treatment, a better prognosis, and displacement or devitalisation of adjacent tooth. © This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.","PeriodicalId":16606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74052702","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The assessment of correlation between periodontal disease and macular degeneration was performed. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 178 patients who underwent ophthalmologic examinations and oral examination with community periodontal index (CPI) probe. AMD was diagnosed based on criteria such as presence of soft indistinct drusen orreticular drusen and presence of hard or soft distinct drusen with pigmentary abnormalities in the absence of late AMD. Results: There were 102 males and 76 females. 61.3% (108) patients had periodontal diseases and 8.4% (15) had AMD. Among AMD patients, habit of smoking (10), hypertensive (8), anemia (12) and cardiovascular disease (5) was evident. Serum HDL level was 54.2 mg/dl, serum ferritin level was 104.6 ng/ml and BMI was 28.4 Kg/m2. AMD patients had severe periodontal diseases in 7, moderate in 3 and 2 in mild, non AMD had 1 moderate and 2 in severe periodontal diseases. The difference between AMD and non AMD was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: AMD patients had severe periodontal diseases as compared to non AMD patients. © This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.","PeriodicalId":16606,"journal":{"name":"Journal of oral medicine","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82013431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
