Capability of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on balancing the variable generation profiles of Photovoltaic (PV) systems makes the BESS a modern grid solution. Furthermore, the BESS can help restore power in the event of blackout. In this paper, the contribution of BESS to facilitate their black-start capability is investigated. In addition, the role of the BESS in smoothing out fluctuations and disturbances associated with voltage and frequency changes, is assessed following an unexpected disturbance. To evaluate the dynamic performance and response of the BESS in recovering power during black-start and reducing disturbances, simulation studies were carried out considering IEEE 33 node test network, PV systems, and a BESS. Two critical case studies were considered to determine the level of BESS contribution in reducing disturbances’ impacts and speeding network recovery. Results showed that, with the BESS, 100% of the total load of the network is supplied while it is not the case without the use of BESS. The BESS responds to sudden voltage and frequency changes. During voltage variation, the BESS injects reactive power to the network which could increase the network voltage at some nodes. Finally, the power drawn from MV grid is reduced due to BESS frequency response under frequency excursion.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133845573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the cost and construction time of traditional energy storage is long, making it difficult to apply on a large scale. Therefore, the use of flexible load active regulation responding to the grid demand is getting more and more attention from scholars, which is called demand response (DR). In this paper, a model for load participation in DR dispatch in cities is investigated. Loads are integrated into electric vehicle load aggregator (EVLA) and building load aggregator (BLA) by type to participate in power grid optimal dispatch, thus reducing total operation cost and energy storage demand, and reducing wind and PV waste. The validity of the model is verified by cases based on real data adjustment.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"7 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113936098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State of the Art linearization approaches in the optimization of CCM can lead to violations of (n-1)-security not identified by algorithms based on linearization. This paper investigates the impact of exact outage simulations based on AC load flow equations and outage approximations based on linearization on the violation of (n-1)-security and computational effort in the optimization of CCM. Exemplary results show that exact outage simulations based on AC load flow calculation guarantee (n-1)-security at the cost of extreme computational effort. Outage approximations based on linearization can greatly reduce the computational effort, but can lead to violations of (n-1)-security by up to 7 %. Therefore, this paper introduces an advanced centralized algorithm combining linearized outage and exact outage calculations. The results show that the advanced centralized algorithm ensures (n-1)-security while increasing the computational effort in comparison to outage approximations by only a factor of between 39 % and 65 %.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115446511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, wind energy has yet to be fully utilized due to a major challenge in generating electricity from the wind turbine rotor and the electric generator which operate at different speeds. A new method has been proposed to address this issue which integrates counter-rotor generators with planetary gears operating at fixed carrier operating conditions. This approach uses a synchronous machine with a counter-rotor generator connected to a planetary gear set, increasing the relative speed between the rotor and the stator. The proposed design has shown a significant increase in efficiency in the low-speed region, but its efficiency gain decreases when the operating speed exceeds 60% of the rated speed. Smaller gear set ratios result in higher relative speeds and more significant efficiency gains. However, while the proposed design improves efficiency at low speeds, the absolute value of the efficiency is still relatively low.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"5 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113954519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, simulations are frequently the only way to perform adequate testing for such DC grids. In order to prevent excessive computation times, it is necessary to carefully balance complexity and accuracy of the simulation. The occurring trade-off between taking risks and oversizing the system is a critical choice. Since novel DC grids have a stronger bidirectionality and additional a certain degree of enmeshment, the influence of these properties on the required simulation complexity is analyzed in this paper. Subsequently, a possibility is presented to determine the necessary simulation depth by optimizing a cost function prior to the actual modeling of the system.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"45 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120870720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Adopting a distributed finite-time secondary controller from the literature, we use the physical relations in the DCMG network to eliminate the dependency of the local controllers on the voltage information of the neighboring units. This is done by using the local measurements of the load and the unit currents and the line resistances to achieve voltage consensus in the network. Another revision is to modify the control law for the unit responsible for tracking the reference voltage from an external tertiary controller in the interconnected network setting. We propose to release this unit from any responsibilities except for the reference voltage tracking. Finally, we propose to include a saturation function on the secondary controller with an integrator anti-windup logic to maintain the system voltages within a safe limit. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller provides superior performance compared to the conventional controller in achieving all of the desired control objectives for the DCMGs.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123591370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result of this trend, EVs have become an integral part of those countries power grid ecosystem, where they may be used as both a source, and a consumer of energy. However, cybersecurity risks associated with large fleets of EVs within the power grids can significantly impact the normal operation of distribution systems. This paper considers the cyber-attack consequences, from attackers’ perspective. The cyber attackers under study target the charging price (CP) by increasing the CP in off-peak hours and accordingly subsiding it in on-peak hours. A two-stage optimization framework is proposed to identify the most important ultra-fast charging stations (XFCs) under the cyber-attack, meanwhile, the EV users’ response to the compromised CP is considered. Then, the proposed model is implemented on a modified IEEE 123-bus distribution test system, and the effectiveness of the model is proved through some case studies. In particular, they demonstrated that the amount of load shedding is increased by 8.198 MW when the EV user response is taken into account.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114828756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the question arises whether resource adequacy (RA) is still guaranteed in the European power system. In the future, demand side management (DSM) will play a more important role in ensuring RA. In order to consider DSM processes in the evaluation of RA, a variety of DSM properties must be taken into account. In this paper, four different models with varying levels of detail in considering DSM properties are developed within a cost minimizing dispatch optimization model. Subsequently, the different models are applied to an exemplary scenario and evaluated in terms of DSM usage, influence on the relevant indicators for RA as well as computational runtime. The results demonstrate that the reduction of the level of detail when considering DSM properties is accompanied by an increase in the assumed flexibility of the DSM processes, but also by a significant reduction in the computation runtime.","PeriodicalId":165790,"journal":{"name":"2023 International Conference on Future Energy Solutions (FES)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126252664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
