A total of 1443 undergraduate students from nine academic disciplines at Universitas Padjadjaran in Bandung, Indonesia, participated in the study, completing 11 subtests of the Tes Intelligensi Kolektip Indonesia Tinggi (TIKI-T). A hierarchical cluster analysis approach using Ward’s linkage method and squared Euclidean distance was conducted, followed by a nonhierarchical k-means cluster analysis using simple Euclidean distance as the similarity measure to examine two-, three-, four-, and five-cluster solutions. An intra-class correlation (ICC) and a discriminant analysis were also conducted to validate the cluster membership results. This research identified five profiles of intelligence that had an effect on academic performance. Students with high scores in the scholastic aptitude subtests tended to have higher grade point average than those with high scores in the nonverbal ability subtests and the speed and accuracy ability subtests. The findings can be used as a recommendation for psychologists in Indonesia for university placement tests. Social media applications that provide widespread opportunities to share photos with peers, celebrities, and families can impact the body image of adolescent girls. The aim of this study was to explore the use of social media and its impact on perceptions, cognitions, and emotions that underlie body image of adolescent girls. Furthermore, this study also explored specific behaviors as consequences of positive or negative body image of adolescent girls. The authors conducted focus group discussions on eleven first-and third-semester female students at a university in Surabaya. The results of this study showed that all participants used more than one social media application, including Line, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Activities these participants frequently engaged in, such as uploading photos, viewing other people’s photos, following friends or Instagram celebrities (Insta-celebs), stimulated them to make upward appearance comparisons and more likely to cause negative body image, even though there were participants who still had positive body image. Media literacy, parental guidance, and self-appreciation are necessary to overcome this problem.","PeriodicalId":165722,"journal":{"name":"Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133080826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reading predictors typically signify, with some degree of error, essential cognitive skills needed for individuals to read effectively. This is crucial since it forms a key part of the initial steps to assess or identify reading-related language impairments such as dyslexia. In addition to measures of reading itself and nonverbal intelligence, the present research examines six empirically motivated potential predictors of reading and decoding: phonological awareness; phonological short-term memory; verbal and semantic fluency; rapid automated naming (RAN); motor control; familial risk; and, self-reported factors. The results show that RAN is a dominant predictor among the other factors that were considered in adolescent SI speakers. The results also show strong support for the notion that the importance of RAN increases as children age. Moreover, it is consistent with previous studies that have argued that RAN is a vital predictor of reading development in transparent orthographies.","PeriodicalId":165722,"journal":{"name":"Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130779142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though sojourner students initially had high academic self-efficacy, it does not necessarily help them to survive their new academic learning environment. This study argues that normative achievement goal orientation moderates the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic adjustment among sojourner students. To test the hypothesis, data was collected from 296 first-year sojourner students from 16 public universities in Indonesia and analyzed using Hayes moderator analysis. The results showed that normative achievement goal orientation negatively moderated the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic adjustment (β = −0.09, SE = 0.04, p = 0.02). The results of the present study indicate that the role of normative achievement goal orientation is maladaptive. By using the big fish—little pond phenomena at the discussion, we make sense of the results with the aim of advancing current knowledge. We proposed collaborative learning as a method to lower first-year sojourner students’ normative achievement goal orientation, thus helping them to increase academic adjustment. Communication among local, national, and global members of this movement is needed to spread it further and support food sovereignty. This study focused examines the dynamics of local–global communication in a food-sovereignty movement by comparing peasants’ statements in the relevant communicative spaces and official texts produced by LVC. The method of ethnography of communication (EO) is used to determine peasants’ understanding of food sovereignty and the context that influences it. Based on a multi-site strategy of ethnography for gathering data, we observed seven relevant communicative spaces and interviewed 22 peasants from 15 Indonesian regions. We also gathered secondary data to analyze LVC’s official publications. We found a convergence between local and global in understanding food sovereignty, suggesting that the dynamics of local–global communication are influenced by the following: (1) the existence of communicative spaces on the local, national, and global levels; (2) the importance of the participation of local peasants in these communicative spaces; and (3) location-specific issues.
