The beams extracted from these rings will be transported to the target and used for the implosion of fuels. The key issues among the many accelerator beam dynamics problems are: (1) the suppression of coherent instabilities of high-current, short bunched beams of relatively low energy ( approximately 50 MeV/u); (2) focusing the beam uniformly on the small target through the long beam transport line in the presence of chromatic aberration; and (3) the selection of a structure and materials to achieve a plasma temperature of several hundreds of electron-volts. Present research is focused on beam cooling devices to be installed for the improvement of beam emittance and momentum spread, to assure a small focal spot of the extracted beam on the target. Stochastic and electron beam cooling techniques are being developed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129036488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High-density and high-temperature hot spots are observed at the crossing point(s). From these hot spots, an intense, spatially confined burst of X-rays is emitted which can served as a pump for resonant photopumping lasers. Experimental results concerning the radiation emission using Al x-pinches are reported. The optimum mass loading for different ionization stages of Al ions and the total X-ray energy yields have been examined. The density and temperature of the plasma and the size of the hot spots have been measured. Diagnostics used for these include pinhole photography, streak and framing photography, filtered XRDs, pin diodes, and XUV and soft X-ray spectroscopy. The size of the hot spots is determined from pinhole photographs. No strong Al line radiation for photon energy is found in the range from 300 to 1500 eV. When the He-like or H-like ionization stage is reached, radiation is dominated by resonant K-shell line radiation approximately 1.6 keV in energy. Thus, at the higher hot-spot temperatures, XRDs with filters suitable for the soft X-ray region are used to estimated the Al plasma temperature and to measure the soft X-ray radiation energy yield. The total K-shell line radiation of Al ions is monitored by a pin diode.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123651287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of foil focusing has been extended to structures that are nonuniform in the transverse direction. The limiting case is an axial array of single wires along a diameter of the transport tube. The strong steering force and high transparency of wire arrays suggest applications to circular accelerators such as recirculating induction linacs. As an example of capabilities, a wire array can contain a 50-MeV, 30-kA electron beam with a tube radius of curvature of only 0.5 m. An energy error of 20 MeV shifts the beam axis only about 1 mm. The high momentum acceptance may have applications to multipass recirculators.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121408233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A type of first-order Fermi electron acceleration associated with quasi-perpendicular shocks has been studied. Ion-scale transverse waves in the magnetic field upstream of the shock do not scatter electrons. However, when these waves are advanced into the shock, the leading edges are compressed first, producing mirror points for a large fraction of the electrons. Thus a population of electrons is trapped in a flux tube between two such mirror points that converge as the field continues to advect into the shock. A similar trap is formed when straight field lines are advected into a concave region of a corrugated shock. In either case, the population is longitudinally accelerated by compression between converging mirrors. A few electrons, having special initial conditions, can be accelerated by this means to energies thousands of times greater than their injection energies. Starting from a Maxwellian distribution of initial energies, the resulting particle energy spectrum is a mildly heated (factors of two to five) Maxwellian plus a power law to very high energies with an index -2.6.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114359976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fundamental properties of the cusp dynamics have been examined by using simplified, but still realistic, models that assess the effects of various experimental parameters in terms of gain reduction. An attempt has been made to devise experimentally realizable optimum beam configurations. Special emphasis is given to off-centering sources and methods to reduce them. The single particle orbit equation has been solved using simple approximations from which the effects of several field contributing factors are examined. The experimental factors considered were the magnetic field profiles, including the degree of the field reversal, the cusp transition thickness, and the adiabatic compression after the transition. It has been found that the unbalanced field effect generally contributes most to the off-centering and that adiabatic compression after the cusp reduces both the beam radius and the off-centering effect. The features of an optimum magnetic field are given.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116364484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A hot MCP is presently under investigation. This detector supports an increased strip current, which is expected to yield at least an order of magnitude improvement in count rate before saturation occurs. Initial attempts to eliminate the spurious noise problems due to gyroelectrons were focused on shielding the MCP from external magnetic fields by enclosing the detector in a soft iron shield. The current concept entails a method to ground the input surface of the MCP and bias the exit anode pad (previously at ground potential) to +2100 V. This method requires capacitive coupling of the anode pad to the signal processing electronics.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121569055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The microwave breakdown of air through avalanche ionization has been simulated on a computer. Focusing techniques using large heater array antennas have been explored and evaluated for their ability to create a plasma cloud at a prescribed location and inclination. These techniques include frequency chirping, random thinning of the heater array, discrete vertical scanning, and use of multiple heater pulses. The effects of these techniques on the shape, intensity, and gradient of the plasma cloud have been determined. Irregularities in the plasma cloud have been analyzed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121715512","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its early stage of development, many problems are unsolved. A key one is particle and energy transport, where several models offer different scaling laws, ranging from the upper limit given by the loss sphere scattering model to more pessimistic laws based on anomalous lower hybrid transport. The authors have fitted the loss sphere model to the limited database available and compared the results with those of other scaling laws. They have focused on the energetic and nuclear performance of both D-T- and D-/sup 3/He-fueled plasmas in such a device. A profile averaged 0-D plasma model that includes all relevant physical processes has been used. The D-T cycle with its lower operating temperature offers an easier start-up scenario than D-/sup 3/He. The D-/sup 3/He cycle, however, offers a unique possibility for a low-neutron and low-radioactivity environment. It also provides favorable conditions for direct energy conversion of charged particles, which is ideally suited to the FRC.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":" 88","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113952607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Opening is assumed to occur at the cathode, either by erosion or push-back. The loss results only when a large voltage appears after opening into a high-impedance load. Then the difference in potential between the plasma, which is near anode potential, and the cathode results in an axial component of E at the load end of the plasma, which supports an E*B drift of electrons across the gap. The analytic model predicts that this loss should increase with higher voltage after opening and can be eliminated only by removing the plasma from the gap or eliminating cathode electron emission (both difficult), or by confining this downstream electron flow with an applied magnetic field.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":165717,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1989 International Conference on Plasma Science","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124094706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
