In this paper, we compare two techniques designed to improve the performance of TCP in such networks, that have been proposed and simulated by various authors and we give analytical reviews on these proposals. These schemes are link layer protocol that provides local reliability; and split connection protocol, that break the end to end connection into two parts at the base station.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133034415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of the proposed architecture is to reduce the latency and overheads of joins, leaves and handoffs in the regions that experience high group dynamics and mobility. The proposed architecture focuses on a maximum degree base station tree (MDBST) routing algorithm and an infrastructure that is designed to support low latency joins, leaves and hands off, though the resulting multicast tree may be sub-optimal. Our new infrastructure uses the maximum degree base tree algorithm in dynamic regions.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122009417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The performance evaluation of several protocols in ad-hoc networks is carried out under a simulation environment. The simulation should provide us the ideal environment under which the behavior of nodes and the protocols can be tested. The mobility models therefore play a vital role in describing the topology and the movement of the nodes. Recent survey on the mobility models for the ad-hoc networks illustrates the different models and their weaknesses in resembling the realistic scenario. Though the recent models consider the placement of obstacles, still there are some weaknesses. This paper provides a realistic mobility model, called VeMo, by dividing the network area into different types of zones. The movement of the node considers the time factor and the attraction weight. The results shows that the performance of the standard routing protocol like DSR degrades while it is being used with this mobility model.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129172842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, nearly all e-commerce applications envisioned and developed so far assume fixed or stationary users with wired infrastructure. We envision many new e-commerce applications that will be possible and significantly benefit from emerging wireless and mobile networks context-aware computing is a mobile computing paradigm in which applications can discover and take advantage of contextual information. Before mobile devices, computer applications only had to consider a fairly limited set of contextual concerns where users performed tasks on computers that remained stationary. With the advent of mobile and wireless devices, context is a less predictable influence on the actual design and use of computer systems. People are using applications in environments that are relatively unstable from one moment to the next. This paper attempts to present basic concepts like definition, characteristics, and types of context and features that are characteristic for context-aware applications. Structuring context aware applications is important for modularizing their implementation. The modularization is necessary for re-use and sharing of software and hardware components. A five-layer model for structuring context aware applications is presented later. It also discusses on location based service requirements and concludes with illustrations.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127027303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The energy constraint inherent in the small battery powered nodes presents a considerable problem, and much effort is being put into reducing the power consumption. Using the best single path results in high frequency of flooding and high power consumption which are overcome by using multipath routing algorithms. It is found that multipath routing protocols has the advantage of sharing energy depletion between all the sensor nodes. In recent years a variety of new multipath routing protocols have been developed specifically for wireless sensor networks (WSN), but no realistic performance comparison between them has been attempted. In this paper, we conduct a detailed, empirical evaluation of the performance of multipath routing protocols.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115691044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By considering a data-centric approach and trying to monitor and report events from specific locations according to the requests of the sinks, energy is saved in terms of precious battery-power and additional communication overhead is reduced. The ant colony heuristic provides a robust mechanism to choose the most stable routing paths. Based on the probability of occurrence of the data sites according to the user queries, the movements of the ants are biased towards those sites. Zones of reachability are assigned in the network to better estimate a fire and also to reduce the overhead involved. Sensing of multiple phenomena is carried out by an odor-analysis approach. Local interactions are made use of here to globally optimize the tree generated. Ant-aggregation, of particular use here, reduces the data to be forwarded while sending various kinds of reports back to the sinks. Simulation is carried out in NS-2 and the results obtained are promising when a suitable zone radius is chosen.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116099854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found, that, to increase the throughput, no sophisticated routing techniques or expensive transmission techniques are needed. However, mobile communication of multimedia content has several bottlenecks, including limited bandwidth of cellular networks, channel noise, and battery constraints of the appliances. This paper is a review of the block matching algorithms used for motion estimation in video compression. It implements and compares 7 different types of block matching algorithms such as, exhaustive search, three step search (TSS), new three step search (NTSS), simple and efficient search (SES), four step search (4SS), diamond search (DS), adaptive rood pattern search (ARPS) and conclude the better block estimation algorithm for video compression. The algorithms that are evaluated in this paper are widely accepted by the video compressing community and have been used in implementing various standards. Of the various algorithms studied and simulated ARPS turns out to be the better block matching algorithm for motion estimation.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126479227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It differs from the infrastructure-based network by not having base stations to rely on but the network achieves connectivity by using an ad hoc routing protocol. Absence of any fixed infrastructure pose number of different problems to this area. Some of the challenges that require standard solutions include routing, bandwidth constraints, hidden terminal problem and limited battery power. Routing is the process of information exchange between two hosts in networks. Routing is the first area that attainedfocus since the invention of commercialized mobile ad hoc networks In this paper, we present a comprehensive review for routing features and techniques in wireless ad hoc networks. For more than a dozen typical existing routing protocols, we compare their properties according to different criteria, and categorize them according to their routing strategies and relationships.","PeriodicalId":165524,"journal":{"name":"2006 International Symposium on Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126504166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed codec offers wide range of choices to the user to achieve compression and the desired data rate corresponding to an image quality. Performance of the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) and RS coder for different compression rates and BER probabilities is presented. The proposed scheme led to an imperceptible decrease in the PSNR values but a considerable decrease in the bpp values as compared to the corresponding figures obtained from the existing SPIHT-RCPC scheme.
