Pisząc te słowa, miał ponad pięćdziesiąt lat i zarządzał powierzoną mu instytucją oraz jej zbiorami od niemal ćwierć wieku. Jego doświadczenie zawodowe i perspektywa życiowa oraz kilkuletni dystans od opisywanych wydarzeń powodują, że trudno zarzucać przesadę temu sformułowaniu. Należy natomiast zastanowić się, co mogło go skłonić do wyrażenia tak negatywnej opinii. Aby zrozumieć zmianę, jaka zaszła w sytuacji Muzeum w okresie zaborów i kolejnym – odzyskiwania przez Polskę niepodległości, należy przedstawić stan samej instytucji, jak i warunków społeczno-gospodarczych panujących w Krakowie w ostatnich miesiącach I wojny światowej w porównaniu z okresem późniejszym.
