The OpenBTS project provides a software suite, created for the GNU Radio environment, and able to mimic the behavior of a GSM BTS. In order to allow GSM users to make calls and send text messages, it is necessary to operate some hardware modifications on the SDR motherboard, to set up a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server, to configure the server for providing connectivity between the mobile devices and the VoIP backhaul. In this paper, we will illustrate the needed software and hardware, and the steps necessary to create a small, cheap and autonomous GSM BTS.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129968654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The physical cause of snoring is an obstruction of the human upper airway found at three primary sites: soft palate, pharynx or tongue. Although palatal flutter may not be the only cause of snoring, it is found to be the dominant mechanical factor in many subjects. The main objective of this study is to design a biomechanical model of the soft palate in order to analyze its vibration behavior. The model, based on fluid dynamics fundamentals, can be used to compare the vibration of a healthy soft palate to a problematic one, considering its length and stiffness, and, thus, it could be a useful tool to estimate the effectiveness of the current treatments to snoring problem.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130056940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among these, the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) solutions promise to substantially improve both many processes in healthcare environments and the patient safety connected to the reduction of errors in drug prescriptions and administration. Unfortunately, there are still some barriers limiting the large-scale deployment of these innovative technologies in the healthcare sector. In order to face these challenges, multidisciplinary skills are required. A recent research project has attempted to coordinate heterogeneous activities focused on the tracing and tracking of drugs at item level on the pharmaceutical supply chain. One of these is related to the evaluation of potential effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields, generated by RFID devices in UHF band, on drugs. This paper aims to introduce some investigative techniques useful to carry out an experimental protocol able to evaluate the potential alterations of the molecular structure of some biological drugs exposed to electromagnetic fields. The work highlighted that the experimental analysis is complex because it depends strongly on particular molecules. Some experimental results on ActrapidTM, a human insulin preparation, are reported. They showed the absence of substantial alterations both in molecular structure and biological activity of ActrapidTM.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131738883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This algorithm has very good security and statistical properties. In addition it suggests a non trivial information theoretical interpretration of the redundancy mechanism in DNA sequences which does not seem to be present in the biological literature: according to this interpretation the introns do not directly code information, but play an essential role in the decoding procedure. Furthermore, using strategic functions, the algorithm is able to confound the standard statistical tests (like Test-U01 or Die-Harder) [1] responding in a nonsignificant way. The final result shows that rely on statistical tests as well as there's never sufficient, sometimes is also not necessary.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114652492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within each Intelligent Electrode, an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is integrated which includes a gain-bandwidth selectable analog front-end circuit, an 8-bit SAR ADC and a digital controller. The key of the ASIC is the analog front-end circuit with tunable gain and bandwidth which can be configured for Electrocardiogram (ECG), Electroencephalogram (EEG) or Electromyogram (EMG) measurement. Common mode interference is effectively rejected due to the circuit's high Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR), which is higher than 135 dB up to 100 Hz and better than 110dB up to 1 kHz. Since a dedicated data transmission protocol is implemented on chip, the Intelligent Electrodes can establish a self-organized network and perform synchronous measurements for multiple bio-signals.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114998424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The employed sensor concept requires a continuous wireless data exchange between the two systems implanted in the left and in the right eye, respectively. In this paper, we present three strategies for establishing this inter-implant communication link and evaluate them with regard to their lowest achievable duty cycle. We also describe a two-way synchronisation method for efficient computation of the relative timer offset between both systems. The method accounts for relative clock drift, which significantly increases accuracy when using clocks with large relative drift. The proposed communication strategies are currently being implemented in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band at 433 MHz using off-the-shelf transceivers and microcontrollers. First measurements of synchronisation accuracy and relative clock drift predict duty cycles in the range of 0.6%–1.0 %.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123728080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we consider frequency hopping as one possible frequency assignment approach. In particular we focus our attention on cognitive radio cellular systems as one of the very promising future access technologies, taking IEEE 802.22 as an example. While the optimal frequency assignment for such a system is conceptually straightforward as well as computationally complex, we demonstrate that usage of distributed methods leads to a significant loss of assignment efficiency. In addition, we suggest means of mitigating this adverse effect.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122060175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed antenna can be conformal to the capsule dome and is also characterized by light weight, low profile, low cost, small size. A broadband trapezoid monopole receiver antenna is developed for transmission measurements. The UWB transmission loss characteristics in body tissue are exploited based on the measurement solution. Moreover, a successful video transmission from inside to outside body has been carried out based on multiband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) scheme using the proposed antennas. Additionally, a preliminary research based on a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) carrier transmission has been done to investigate the potential capsule endoscope communication performance.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124468513","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
