It is assumed the transmitter aims at sending individual information to a large number of single-antenna users (n) through a common wireless channel. Assuming there is a total transmit power constraint, the FPAS attempts to select the maximum number of active users in which each can receive the minimum rate constraint of Rmin. Noting this and assuming the system delay is defined as the minimum number of channel uses such that each user with probability approaching one is selected at least once, we show that for the case of single-antenna BC, the expected delay of FPAS scales as Rmin n logn/loglogn + ω(n/loglogn). Then, using our earlier proposed FPAS for multi-antenna BC, it is shown the expected delay of this strategy behaves like Rmin n logn/M loglogn−θ(1) + ω(n/loglogn), where M denotes the number of transmit antennas. Moreover, it is shown for sufficiently large (k) number of channel uses, the average number of services received by a randomly selected user for single-antenna and multi-antenna BC scale as k loglogn/nRmin (1+O(√logk/k)) and kM loglogn/nRmin (1+O(√logk/k)), respectively.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128365095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for the mimimum mean-square error (MMSE) of the channel estimator for an SFBC receiver is calculated comparing optimum versus robust Wiener interpolation. Further a lower bound on the bit error ratio (BER) of a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulated SFBC system with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is derived. Finally the bit error outage (BEO) of the linear Alamouti combiner in presence of log-normal fading signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is compared for different power delay profiles (PDP).","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129679016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationship between the extracted time and frequency domain parameters and the medical parameters of the patent ductus arteriosus has been investigated. This analysis revealed that the frequency parameters of the murmur could be related to the diameter of the PDA and to the maximal blood flow velocity through the PDA. Nevertheless the results are promising, further work is needed for more reliable parameter estimation for robust verification of the mentioned relationships.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123940361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different parts of the world experience varied and varying effects of the disasters depending on their physical, social, political and economic environment. These disasters have negative effects which include: loss of human and animal life; loss of property; and destruction of the livelihood systems. Given this scenario there is need to find ways of minimizing the negative effects of disasters through timely response and proper management of disasters. Technologies both old and new can help in reducing the effects of disasters in various ways. It is premised that ICTs do/can play an important role as a medium of information and communication in development and disaster response. In Africa, ICTs hold a great promise, firstly in the generation of important information, secondly its subsequent transmission, and thirdly by linking people and organisations. This paper reviews literature on the contribution of ICTs in development and disaster response from across the world, with special attention to the opportunities and challenges for Africa.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114195752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The derived estimator is optimized for ranging measurements exploiting the received signal strength (RSS). For this purpose, the bias and uncertainties of the RSS based ranging procedure are analyzed, considering a path loss model of an indoor ultra-wideband (UWB) network under line of sight (LOS) conditions. The nonlinearity of the path loss model is first taken into account before the statistics of the observed RSS are approximated by a Taylor sequence of first order. The so found metrics describe a weighted least squares (WLS) method. The metrics of the estimator are analytically derived in closed-form. The performance of the derived estimator is investigated in Monte-Carlo simulations and compared with a simple least squares (LS) method and another method exploiting RSS fingerprints.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126199920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EEG data came from 6 healthy volunteers repeatedly exposed to 20 min stimulation that comprised intervals with steady stimulation at 4 and 17 Hz. Entrainment of the brain waves and phase synchronization both significantly increased during the stimulation in comparison to nonstimulating conditions accross the whole cortex. Positive correlation of entrainment and phase synchronization was obtained. Directionality analysis suggests that applied methods may estimate direction of information flow from visual processing centers towards frontal cortex locations.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126226511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units) are often used in this area for assessing a specific movement which is relevant to the diagnosis of a particular disease or trauma. The evaluation is predominantly based on the analysis of the sensors output waveform in which a pattern can be recognized or the initial and the final positions of the movement detected. Using IMUs composed of tri-axial digital accelerometers and gyroscopes, we have attempted to obtain the actual trajectory of the whole movement, in order to track basic exercises related to specific planes of movement and/or rotation. In this paper we will explain how the techniques used can be exploited in a system for assessing post-traumatic rehabilitation for obtaining an immediate visual result of the activity done by the patient, precise monitoring, a comparison and (automatic) evaluation according to a standard rehabilitation protocol.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122263809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These networks, which are primarily comprised of low-power sensor nodes, provide long term health and physiological monitoring of patients without obstructing their normal activities. However, the time-varying nature of network resources poses a significant challenge to the high reliability of operations required of a body sensor network. In this paper, we address the problem of reliability optimization in multi-hop WBSNs, where the nodes co-operate with each other in maximizing system performance. We model our problem as a co-operative game which inherently induces a distributed mechanism that optimizes the reliability of network operations in a multi-hop WBSN supporting concurrent applications. By the term ‘reliability’, we imply the system utility generated when each sensor node (user) services its specific application. We denote the system utility as an instance of the vector of utilities of individual users, where each user's utility is a function of its allocated bandwidth. Our mechanism jointly accounts for the dynamistic nature of the wireless medium, application quality of service, user fairness in achieving the resources to service applications, and results in an optimal operating point (utility vector) at which the WBSN should operate. We arrive at the result that the Nash bargaining solution of the co-operative game gives us the optimal system operating point, i.e., the Nash bargaining solution optimizes the overall system reliability.","PeriodicalId":165367,"journal":{"name":"2010 3rd International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies (ISABEL 2010)","volume":"263 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115847011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
