Polymer-Carbon composites belong to this category and they possess very high mechanical strength with proven track record in automobile and space applications. These composites are investigated for EMI shielding applications. The EMI shielding effectiveness and parameters like skin depth and attenuation constant are discussed in this paper to highlight the advantages of using carbon composites for EMI shielding applications. To improve the flexibility of these composites, nylon-66 nanofiber interleaving of the carbon epoxy composites was used and its effect on the EMI shielding effectiveness is discussed. The deployment of these composites for EMI shielding applications in the field of high voltage engineering is suggested.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114722062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work a detailed case study has been done of the Indian Railways Traction network across various zones of the country to understand their requirements and preference of choice for their application namely composite/porcelain. Survey indicated Indian railways have realized significant benefits with the use of composite on multiple aspects. To further understand the healthiness of the composite insulators that have been in service for a considerable time, two of them were removed and tests on mechanical, electrical and material aspects were performed in third party NABL accredited labs. This further confirmed the healthy nature of in-service composite insulators.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125417096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed line is to be constructed in steel monopoles and will have 33kV overhead lines below the 132kV single circuit line. The recommended right of way (wayleave) for 132kV single circuit line is 30m as per Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) standards. However, since this particular line passes through highly constructed area in a city, the available right of way was constrained to 10m i.e, 5m on each side measured from the center of the line. From site survey, 3 specific points of interest were also identified where already constructed storey buildings were found just beyond the edge of the right of way. The objective of this paper is to do analytical calculations of the electric and magnetic fields anticipated to be experienced at 1m above the ground at the edge of the 10m right of way of the proposed 132kV line, as well as at the top of the storey buildings at the specific points of interest identified during site visit. The calculations were done using the parameters of the already proposed steel monopoles whose heights had been determined based on terrain and clearance requirements only. Since the electric field values obtained were found to be beyond the recommended limits by International Commission on Non Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) 2010 guidelines, recommendations on mitigation measures to ensure compliance are proposed and recalculations were carried out to demonstrate adequacy of the recommendations to ensure compliance.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127914516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Service cables are exposed to different stresses i.e. natural aging, electrical stress, mechanical stress, thermal stress etc. which are main causes of reduction of dielectric strength of insulation that leads to cable failure. Due to its high dielectric strength, Cross Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) is used in most of the high voltage (HV) cables for insulation purpose. The reason behind most of the HV cable unable to carry bulk power due to internal discharge happen in inner most parts of the insulation. In order to get advance information about the health of HV cables periodic condition monitoring of XLPE insulation cable is needed. In this work, chemical and electrical properties of thermally aged cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation was examined, by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and impulse breakdown voltage measurement respectively.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116783533","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The type tests are performed to assess the short circuit capabilities of transformer windings. These tests are carried out in indoor transformer testing laboratories. The required short circuit power and current in the test facility are made available from the national grid. This being an online test facility, the testing will have significant impact on the grid operation especially in the case of weak grids. Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) is establishing an online test facility at UHVRL, Hyderabad to test the distribution transformers. This is a unique online test facility for testing of distribution transformers of the class 11 kV and 33 kV. A comprehensive offline study is conducted to assess the impact of online testing of the distribution transformers on the Indian National grid, the results of which are discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126003684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This cost-effective way has clearly shown the performance improvement for the electricity supply industry. However, there is often resistance to make it a common use. The reduction of outages due to lightning activity and poor grounding makes their application vital. Meanwhile, some users apply this technology also for security of population, switching surge control, line uprating and compaction or live-line working. Even though the use of Externally Gapped Line Arresters can achieve outstanding results by minimizing the investment, this smart protection device shows a mild growth excepting in some specific countries. The EGLA application does not only improve significantly the performance and the operation of the power systems but also improve the design and lower the costs of the construction and the maintenance. The financial benefits are easily demonstrated. Today, proactive maintenance and trend monitoring is a key point for the transmission lines operators. While existing solutions to assess the conditions of the surge arresters are not suitable and relevant, the new generations of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming extremely cost-efficient and accurate to inspect transmission line components. This paper intends to present Siemens latest innovations for compact and cost-efficient lightning-proof transmission lines.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133028954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The factors that decide the performance of 400kV Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables are protrusions, void and contaminants on the layers of cable. The size of these defects assess the insulation performance of XLPE cables. Here, the protrusion defect is taken into consideration. A two dimensional (2D) model geometry of ellipsoidal, spheroidal and hemispherical protrusion on cable layers has been developed using software based on Finite Element Method (FEM). This paper estimates the effect of electric stress enhancement on the various geometry of protrusions on the conductor and inner semiconductor compounds surface used with pulse voltage, say, 10 kV, with pulse width of 2ms applications. The results of EHV insulated cable reveals that ellipsoidal protrusion at a distance of 1mm from the conductor is more severe than other protrusion geometry regarding the induced electric stress are reported here as 0.411 kV/mm and also at the same distance from conductor shield the induced electric stress is 0.212kV/mm.","PeriodicalId":165193,"journal":{"name":"2019 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Technology (ICHVET)","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131890053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
