When attempting to contribute to their study, fleshing out research from a segment of critical theory seldom applied to this sort of literary work can prove useful. Taking infant listeners as possible venture points to explore the genre might allow us to outline an adequate theoretical framework to analyse lullabies whose textual configuration highlights the infant's reception as an opening for epistemological construction. Such is the case, I argue, in Magdalena Fleitas's ‘Rayito de sol’, as the singer-songwriter imprints her song with openings for the child to engage in a dialogic dimension pulsing in the articulation practices and enactment contexts of every lullaby, and which further allows us to account for how corporeality and emotion interconnect in order to substantiate a field of shared emotions between adults and children.","PeriodicalId":163936,"journal":{"name":"International Research in Children's Literature","volume":"7 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139687838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing from the critical work of scholars such as Richard Delgado, Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, Patricia Hill Collins, Joe R. Feagin, Tara Yosso, and Dolores Delgado Bernal, I demonstrate how Duncan and Angulo Cruz's work provides counter-stories for Afro-Latine young people to see themselves and their ancestors as a valuable part of the national imaginary, and further, from these kinds of affirmations, offers essential tools for resistance against racism and other exclusionary oppressions. My analysis draws on three stories from the Jack Mantorra section of the picture book, ‘Yemayá, jefe del pueblo’, ‘Vaicito’, and ‘Y una historia moderna: Miguelillo Tulipán y Bambembimbombum’, all which foreground the cultural wealth of Afro-Latine peoples and cast young Black people as leaders. I argue that these stories provide important tool kits for Afro-Latine children to effectively counter whiteness and Eurocentrism, thus propelling these young readers forward. Whereas colonialism and racism have erased, occluded, or devalued Black lives and their significant contributions, Black heroes like Yemayá, Vaicito, and Miguelillo provide young readers with vital tools for constructing new meanings of self and of community that are Afrocentric in nature. Armed with these forms of cultural awareness and knowledge, Afro-Latine children can become anti-racist activists who disrupt anti-Blackness in Nuestra América. Los cuentos de Anansi seeks to transform the lives of children so that they can transform the world around them. In this regard, Los cuentos de Anansi, in proposing these transformational possibilities, allows us to envision our hemisphere in profoundly more just and equitable ways.","PeriodicalId":163936,"journal":{"name":"International Research in Children's Literature","volume":"73 3-4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139886329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Chilean revolutionary process had curricular and pedagogical repercussions, exposing discomfort towards educational curricula and the hegemony of pedagogical methodologies employed for teaching literature in Chile. Rather than a concrete step-by-step programme for curricular and pedagogical reforms, this research will shed light on the array of institutional interventions and proposals that sought to redefine the relationships among childhoods, youths, and literature during the UP, aimed at dissolving idealised and elitist notions of literature into more ample categories of artistic works. I argue that such proposals illuminate perceptions of childhood and adolescence imbued with ideas of purity and contamination, in which cultural actors in the ecosystems of literature and education regard themselves as impervious to the risks of manipulation and, from the certainty of their positions, test various strategies to shape future citizens that meet the needs of Chile's socialist project.","PeriodicalId":163936,"journal":{"name":"International Research in Children's Literature","volume":"62 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139824634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From a methodological framework that considers situations of enunciation and communication, as proposed by Maingueneau, I will attempt to demonstrate that the discursive manifestations found in this corpus reinforce author-translators’ positioning as part of a groundbreaking literary-discursive tradition in Argentina. This literary and discursive disposition is characterised, among other things, by political commitment and a poetics that proposes novel, unprejudiced ways of looking at the world, far removed from indoctrination in all its shapes and forms. To complement this exploration, I will also venture towards a characterisation of the communicative identity of the enunciator, which ultimately constitutes the translator’s ethos (Spoturno), as a relevant aspect for theorisations of Translation Studies in the field of children’s and young adult literature.","PeriodicalId":163936,"journal":{"name":"International Research in Children's Literature","volume":"28 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139684631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
