The evidence, however, has been limited; like the telephone and the postal letter before that, the Internet has powers as a capable tool for organizing social action and protest. Otherwise, though, it seems to have been co-opted by commercial interests and to be used by the public for arguments concerning already settled opinions, a far cry from the fruitful and thoughtful debates demanded by a true public sphere.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125699315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reviews by Jennifer Jacobs Henderson, Yuwei Lin, and Jenn Burleson Mackay demonstrate that social media are creating a wealth of new and interesting questions. Perhaps not surprisingly, however, many of these questions can be traced back to enduring issues in media ethics, such as truth, privacy, and transparency, to name just a few. While the tools of social media are new (and continually evolving), media ethicists should not find themselves in need of a completely new skill set to deal with them; we may just need more practice.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123841191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ethical theory is applied to these cases as a means of analysis to reveal the moral principles associated with each case. Four cases are analyzed, ranging from bad to arguably innovative. Based upon comparing the moral principles upheld or violated, descriptive ethics are used to infer normative ethical guidelines to govern the use of social media. Fifteen ethical guidelines derived from the cases and normative moral theory are offered as a way to begin a discussion that leads to a deeper understanding of ethics in the burgeoning realm of digital engagement.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132494914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An obvious advantage of the book’s focus on the real-life ethical dilemmas of young professionals is that students can relate to people who are, in many cases, their peers. Just as guest speakers in classes often focus on their current responsibilities, needed skills, internship and job hunting tips, and career trajectories, the book’s case studies include these kinds of insights as well. While “older” professors might chuckle at the naivety of some of the young professionals featured in the book, students should experience that crucial contrast between short-term and long-term career perspectives. Individual cases in Media Ethics at Work could be used for student-written role plays in media ethics classes or senior capstone seminars. However, the book’s emphasis on broadcast and print journalism might discourage professors who teach students in multiple disciplines. Despite this minor drawback, Media Ethics at Work offers a fresh, practical, and “younger” alternative to traditional case study books.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126076653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead, this project focuses more on cultivating a true ethic; that is, a set of tools and propositions to enable individuals to negotiate inevitable conflicts among moral values and challenges posed by cultural contexts and technology use. Foot's “natural normativity” connects the conditions of human flourishing and objective reasons for acting morally, providing a framework for a digital media ethic to address three critical categories: virtuality and authenticity, privacy and autonomy, and exchange and discourse.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"206 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124375897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cases are drawn from actual experience in newsrooms, corporations, entertainment arenas, and other agencies. We invite readers to call our attention to current cases and issues. (There is a special need for good cases in advertising and public relations.) We also invite suggestions of names of people, both professionals and academicians, who might write commentaries. This edition’s section examines the ways images of Detroit are exploited. In their reviews, both Jack Breslin and Kristie Bunton reflect on how important it is to cover material with which students, most of whom are newcomers to media professions, can connect. Both reviewers give kudos to these books for being especially relevant to student readers. The third title in this section focuses on political communication and its increasingly personal nature. While not an “ethics” title per se, reviewer Debra Petersen suggests that the book offers a helpful look at one of ethics’ most enduring issues: privacy.","PeriodicalId":162833,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Mass Media Ethics","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122504568","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
