Arguments prevalent in the past ascribed it to the identity of contradiction, viewing it as an implication of identity. Comrades Rong Kaiming and Lai Chuanxiang published in the fourth issue of Philosophic Studies of 1983 an article entitled \"Transformation Is a Relatively Independent Overall Category,\" which offers a different view. The article holds that the process of transformation itself is not an implication of the identity of contradiction but that the tendency and possibility of transformation has just such an implication. Furthermore, the article groups all categories of dialectics into three different levels and theorizes that the transformation, relation, and development of contradiction are an array of overall categories of materialist dialectics at the primary level; the various laws of dialectics and different pairs of categories are categories at the secondary level subordinate to the overall categories. For man to have consciousness is the most essential factor that differentiates him from animals. The article lays emphasis on probing into the following: the process in which the capacity for practice is converted from potential into reality and the specific social and historical conditions for the conversion; the dialectic relations between the purpose and effect, the effect and efficiency, and the general and the partial effect of practice and the objective criterion to judge the effect; and the feedback mechanism of the movement of practice and its function. As a matter of fact, in defining it as the history of knowledge, Alexandrov also drew his idea from Lenin's definition. The history of philosophy is the history of knowledge and also the history of the struggle between materialism and idealism. The two definitions should complement rather than exclude each other. However, in applying them a deviation will emerge as if the use of the one would invariably violate the other. This is an issue related to the strategic policy of building socialism. The historical experience of socialism and realities in China today tell us that whether or not this policy can be adhered to will have a bearing on the rise or fall, success or failure, of socialism. Why should we raise the question to such a high plane? How can a high level of spiritual civilization be built simultaneously with a high level of material civilization? In advancing a coordinated development of the two, this article tries to inquire into the above problems and provide some theoretical explanations.","PeriodicalId":162534,"journal":{"name":"Chinese Studies in Philosophy","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131176878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
