An optimized Template Matching approach is adopted for pose initialization, while different variants of the Iterative Closest Point algorithm are considered for pose tracking. The algorithms process 3D point clouds generated by a scanning LIDAR. Algorithm performance is investigated within a numerical simulation environment reproducing realistic conditions in terms of target configuration and sensor operation. Results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms provide adequate initialization of the pose parameters as well as pose estimate in the tracking phase with 0.1° accuracy in attitude and sub-centimeter accuracy in relative position, operating with sparse point clouds. Finally, the effect of target visibility in the sensor field of view on the tracking algorithm performance is analyzed in detail.","PeriodicalId":162403,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114997687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper shows how Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) enable to analyze the strain values acquired through a monitoring sensor network and improve the diagnostic steps: 1) detecting a damage 2) identifying the specific component affected 3) characterizing the damage in terms of centre and size. The first two steps are performed through the SVM while the 3rd step is based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Finally, the remaining useful life is estimated by using ANNs to predict the values of two parameters of the NASGRO equation which is used to estimate the damage propagation.","PeriodicalId":162403,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130175307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, the authors present a THz imaging system that exploits compressive sampling (CS) to detect submillimeter cracks with a reduced measurement burden. Traditional methods for THz imaging usually involve raster scan of the issue of interest by means of highly collimated radiations and the corresponding image is achieved by measuring the received THz power in different positions (pixels) of the desired image. As it can be expected, the higher the required resolution, the longer the measurement time. On the contrary, two different approaches for THz imaging (namely, continuous wave and time domain spectroscopy) combined with a proper CS solution are used to assure as good results as those granted by traditional raster scan; a proper set of masks (each of which characterized by a specific random pattern) are defined to the purpose. A number of tests conducted on simulated data highlighted the promising performance of the proposed method thus suggesting its implementation in an actual measurement setup.","PeriodicalId":162403,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128242361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different parameters (geometric position of the microphones in the array, distance between antenna and the sources, quality of the used microphones, data acquisition system, and so on) influence the quality of the measure of acoustic sources position. In this paper, the authors present an analysis of the effect of the above mentioned parameters to the acoustic antennas performances in terms of uncertainty in the measure of sources position. These information can be used in the design phase allowing the correct choice of the different parts composing the acoustic antenna system in order to grant the desired measurement uncertainty. The analysis was carried out in a simulation environment (using a dedicated numerical model to theoretically predict the signals produced by each microphone) finally experimental tested on both linear and bi-dimensional shape acoustic antennas.","PeriodicalId":162403,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122249833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The innovative contribution of such an antenna system relies on modularity, customizability and accommodation friendliness. The antenna concept is based on a Plug and Play architecture, where the basic module is a 2.7 cm-cube with a mass of 53 gr, which can be clustered in array configuration. A catalogue of predefined and ready-to-use clusters could be developed with the possibility of adapting the antenna systems to various platform types by tuning just a few control parameters. Different levels of customization are, in fact, easily achievable reducing the qualification effort. The proposed antenna system has been prototyped and has been validated through two measurement campaigns, in standalone configuration and accommodated on a platform demonstrator having the shape of an ESA Proba V satellite. The whole antenna system has been also simulated with the commercial program ADF-EMS and a good agreement with measurements has been achieved, proving that the characteristics of such an antenna system can be very accurately predicted even in the most complex configurations. A comparison between the proposed solution and a more conventional space avionic radiator has been carried out: even though the EM performances are comparable, mass and encumbrance are instead extremely reduced in MCAS.","PeriodicalId":162403,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Metrology for Aerospace (MetroAeroSpace)","volume":"411 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124390271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Careful attention has been addressed in the integration of the required components in a proper architecture that can be managed by a single user. A specific Virtual Instrument has been developed in LabVIEW environment in order to manage the whole set of hardware components and to show graphical plots of each significant measure with easy operation features even for nonexpert users.
