This paper presents how simplification and aggregation strategies are incorporated in a modeling, simulation and analysis tool, with the aim of supporting decision making in conceptual phase. Conceptual modeling is guided by a framework using an object library with generic drag and drop system components and system control objects. Data inputs are simplified by the use of Effective Process Time distributions and a novel aggregation method for product mix cycle time differences. The out coming specification is through a Web Service interface handle by modeling system architecture, automatically generating a simulation model and analysis. Case studies confirm a breakthrough in project time reduction without appreciable effects on the model¿s fidelity.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124674722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, an approach based on active replication technique has been proposed to improve the performance of simulations by exploring software diversity. To guarantee the correctness of the approach, all replicas of the same federate are required to be Piece-Wise-Deterministic (PWD). However, the PWD restriction will not be satisfied if the replicas achieve software diversity by employing different kinds of synchronization approaches. A replication structure is proposed in this paper, which can transparently handle the federate replicas that use either conservative or optimistic synchronization approach. The execution speed of the federation is increased by always choosing the fastest replica to represent the federate in the federation. Besides presenting the implementation details, we also report the experimental results to demonstrate the performance improvement of the replication structure.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124753335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fault arrival in these networks is unpredictable, however the pattern of fault arrivals is predictable. A key decision involves the planning of staff levels in order to meet potential peak demand (which can be excessive); as planning to meet average demand leads to very poor service levels. The model is used find an agreed balance between service level and \"productivity\". The model also provides a collaborative and transparent decision making methodology for Eircom. The main groups involved are customer service, field management, and the field workforce. The model helps in analysing these conflicting requirements and bringing the three groups together to reach a decision. The models were developed in Micro Saint Sharp and are configured using hospital data and nationally available health episode statistics. The models can be separately but function best as a single, overall system model that allow users to develop understanding of the interaction effects of possible changes. An example of the use of DGHPSim is given, using UK NHS data, demonstrating how it can be used to investigate improvement options whilst keeping an eye on side effects.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129115035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As advances in technology continue to boost our ability to communicate in new and different ways, military forces are restructuring to incorporate these technologies. Yet we are still limited in our ability to measure the contributions made by information networks. We describe three recent studies at the Naval Postgraduate School that involve information networks. First, we examine a simulation model expanded from a two-person, zero-sum game to explore how information superiority contributes to battlefield results and how sensitive it is to information quality. Second, we examine how network-enabled communications affect the logistics operations in a centralized receiving and shipping point. The results are intended to provide operational insights for terminal node operations within a sustainment base. Third, we explore how social networks might be incorporated into agent-based models representing civilian populations in stability operations.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130228150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sequential design methods are iterative algorithms that use data acquired from previous iterations to guide future sample selection. They are often used to improve an initial design such as a Latin hypercube or a simple grid, in order to focus on highly dynamic parts of the design space. In this paper, a comparison is made between different sequential design methods on a real-world electronics problem. Error-based and density-based methods are compared against a novel hybrid technique which incorporates both an error-based measure, using gradient estimations of the objective function, and a density-based measure, using a Voronoi tessellation approximation. The test results indicate that a considerable improvement of the average model accuracy can be achieved by using this new approach.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121320090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The magnitudes of resource actions are often decided by estimating the discrepancy between the demand for services and the supply of workforce. However, naive feedback control of the resource actions by policies that equate the discrepancy to the control action can produce undesirable effects such as oscillation between hiring and releasing of workforce, and amplified oscillation through the stages of the service processes. Effective combination of multiple feedback control schemes can produce desirable policies of workforce resource actions. In this work, we study application of control theoretic principles in managing resource actions to see how various feedback control schemes can improve costs, utilization and stability of workforce.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125860976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
