Mail transportation takes place overnight by airplanes, trains, trucks, and cars in a transportation network comprising a huge number of possible routes. For testing and analysis of different transport solutions, a discrete-event simulation model of the transportation network has been developed. This paper describes the optimization of transport solutions using evolutionary algorithms coupled with the simulation model. The vast transportation network in combination with a large number of possible transportation configurations and conflicting optimization criteria make the optimization problem very challenging. A large number of simulation evaluations are needed before an acceptable solution is found, making the computational cost of the problem severe. To address this problem, a computationally cheap surrogate model is used to offload the optimization process.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122364748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Small lot sizes and the conversion of batch processes to mini-batch or single-wafer processes are widely regarded as a promising means for a step-wise cycle time reduction. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and meaningful studies. In this paper we present first results of our modeling and simulation assessment. Our simulation analysis shows that small lot size and the replacement of batch tools with mini-batch or single wafer tools are beneficial but lot size reduction lacks persuasive effectiveness if reduced by more than half.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114175048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the quantitative benefits of using the Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) technique for a SSP in a Mining and Iron Production Factory (MIPF). The DFSS was deployed through five distinct phases: DMAIC, for optimizing the current MIPF as a first part of the research. The second part of the research investigates the possibilities of developing the deliverables of the DMAIC for a DMADV for implementing a new MIPF. Use of the OPS in all phases of the DMAIC has provided highly effective and accurate prediction for factory process improvement. Furthermore, the paper explored the effective possibilities of developing the deliverables of the DMAIC for the DMADV for building new MIPF.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129757784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The policy for resolution method is under the control of the analyst, and may depend on event type, trajectory probability, or even some metric indicating the trajectory importance. However, taking advantage of the technique for exploring possible outcome spaces requires a probabilistic modeling of events that, in simulations of ground combat, are often treated as deterministic, such as decisionmaking. Even for events such as attrition, which have long been modeled as stochastic, how should the full event outcome set be sampled if one is only to keep two or three samples? This paper explores these issues with the goal of outlining what kinds of data would be needed to fully exploit multi trajectory methods in a combat simulation context.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128448767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inpatient pharmacy delivery systems are one of those that have a key role in hospital¿s service quality. Simulation is the best tool to analyze the hospital pharmacy operations due to their inherent complexity. In this article, a simulation model is developed based on data collected from a hospital in Turkey to analyze its pharmacy delivery system. In comparison to the baseline system, two different scenarios with varying factors are investigated, seeking to minimize drug delivery time to patients. The results presented here indicate the possibility for improved system performance.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128267442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research designed and developed a framework for visualizing complex military and non-military wired and wireless networks. Our framework provides a robust network simulator trace file parser, multiple network visualization layouts-including user-defined layouts, and precise visualization controls. The parser architecture is capable of accepting trace files from different network simulators and provides one common visualization environment to study network scenarios run on different simulators. The many dynamic multi-objective network views add to the analyst¿s suite of tools available for analyzing networks. Analysts can toggle between the different views to provide even greater analysis capability. We describe our methodologies for the design and provide example analysis scenarios. The car manufacturers have to meet the challenge of selecting the most suitable components for their purpose. One way of doing so is to evaluate these components by the help of a car simulation model. Because of the huge number of different technologies, also a lot of simulation models are needed to be able to compare all of those innovative technologies. In this paper, a system is described, with which it is possible to automatically generate simulation models. This system is used to generate varied simulation models which represent different car configurations. After the generation of a model for each car configuration, a parameter optimization is automatically executed. The result is a chosen car simulation model with its set of parameters, which presents an optimal solution for the regarded aim, e.g. efficiency.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130500912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such contracts can be valued using simulation methods proposed for the pricing of American options, but the mortality risk must also be taken into account when pricing such contracts. We also show how to incorporate the mortality risk into these pricing algorithms without explicitly simulating it.","PeriodicalId":162289,"journal":{"name":"2008 Winter Simulation Conference","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128006229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the input data management process is very important and, thus, consumes an extensive amount of time. To secure quality and increase rapidity in DES projects, there are well structured methodologies to follow, but a detailed guideline for how to perform the crucial process of handling input data, is missing. This paper presents such a structured methodology, including description of 13 activities and their internal connections. Having this kind of methodology available, our hypothesis is that the structured way to work increases rapidity for input data management and, consequently, also for entire DES projects.
