The sensor was a Fabry-Pérot interferometer with approximately 16.19 μm thickness of PHMB coated on the fiber end face. Through experimental research, it was found that the proposed flow sensing method featured low medium dependency. Its flow response characteristics were only related to the CO<sub>2</sub> concentration in the measured gas, independent of other gas components in the gas. Both the flow measurement range and spectral phase variation range increased with the rise of CO<sub>2</sub> concentration. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of the sensor improved as the thickness of PHMB increased, and the sensor exhibited excellent repeatability and stability. This work provided new insights into the functional development of chemical-sensitive materials, and opened up a new path for the industrial applications of precision flow measurement and substance detection.","PeriodicalId":16144,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Lightwave Technology","volume":"44 17","pages":"7807-7813"},"PeriodicalIF":5.2,"publicationDate":"2026-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148877936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper experimentally validates a long-distance, high-capacity photonics-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless communication system. To overcome inherent challenges in the THz band, such as high path loss, the receiver innovatively employs an optoelectronic hybrid I/Q mixer, providing natural diversity reception branches. At the signal processing level, the system jointly utilizes diversity reception technology based on Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) and a novel Interleaved Symbol-wise Frequency Averaging Edge Re-Equalization (ISFA-ERE) algorithm designed to mitigate the edge distortion caused by the conventional ISFA technique. This hardware-algorithm co-design significantly enhances the robustness of channel estimation and equalization. Experimental results demonstrate the successful wireless transmission of Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) signals with a carrier frequency of 128 GHz, a transmission distance of 4.6 km, and a bandwidth of 32 GBaud. The proposed reconfigurable EO modulator consists of two parallel sub-modulators arranged in a nested interferometer configuration. By controlling the power splitting/combining ratios and phases of the signals in the modulators, the proposed EO modulator can be reconfigured on demand to generate PAM2/PAM4 and BPSK/QPSK signals in a single monolithic chip. Moreover, to reduce the π-phase-shift voltage, the sub-modulators are realized as ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder modulators. This relaxes the output voltage swing requirements of co-integrated CMOS drivers, which mitigates the bandwidth-swing trade-off, thereby achieving higher modulation speed. Thanks to the co-design and integration, the monolithically integrated CMOS driver supports energy efficiency up to 3.25 pJ/bit. An active area of the chip, fabricated in a GlobalFoundries 45SPCLO, is only 2.48 mm<sup>2</sup>, including the proposed reconfigurable EO modulator and two monolithically integrated CMOS drivers. A new method for non-destructive measurement of the ion pairing coefficient in Ho-doped fibers is introduced and validated. Using this method, we link our 57% slope efficiency to a low ion pairing coefficient of 4% in the NRL Ho-doped fiber as derived from our experimental data. However, under the combined influence of turbidity and bubble disturbance, the received signals will suffer from amplitude attenuation, signal distortion, and time-varying envelope fluctuation, making the reliable recognition of modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) extremely challenging. To address this issue, we propose a JMCR method based on a parallel heterogeneous multi-task learning framework for turbid and dynamic underwater environments. This framework is composed of an in-phase and quadrature sequence representation module, a parallel convolutional neural network-residual network feature extraction module, a bidirectional gated recurrent unit-based temporal dependency modeling module, and a correlation-aware multi-task recognition module, which are used to extract complementary features, capture temporal dependencies, and improve joint recognition consistency. For 24 MCSs composed of 4/16/64 quadrature amplitude modulation and 4/8/16 phase shift keying modulation formats, along with low-density parity-check codes (with code rates of 0.50 and 0.75) and Polar codes (with code rates of 0.25 and 0.50) coding schemes, we conduct feasibility verification of the proposed method in composite underwater environments with turbidity and bubble disturbance in the laboratory. The results show that the average JMCR accuracy of the proposed method reaches 92.7% under 16 underwater conditions, which includes the 0.6% performance improvement brought about by the correlation-aware supervision. This indicates that the proposed method has great application potential in composite underwater environments with turbidity and bubble disturbance.","PeriodicalId":16144,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Lightwave Technology","volume":"44 17","pages":"7543-7553"},"PeriodicalIF":5.2,"publicationDate":"2026-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148877889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work proposes and demonstrates a phase-modulated dual-frequency fiber laser (PM DFFL) architecture by utilizing two phase-modulated single-frequency lasers (PM SFFLs) separated by a controlled frequency interval. The proposed scheme leverages cascaded four-wave mixing to generate a multi-peak spectrum while preserving high temporal stability, thereby substantially reducing the spectral power density and thus alleviating stringent constraints on modulation parameters. When seeded into a Yb-doped fiber amplifier, the PM DFFL delivers a pump-limited output power of 2 kW and exhibits a 36.7 dB improvement in the signal-to-Raman ratio relative to a conventional fiber oscillator. Moreover, when employed as the Raman pump source in a Yb-Raman hybrid gain fiber laser system, the PM DFFL achieves performance comparable to that of high-bandwidth PM SFFLs in mitigating spectral broadening and suppressing second-order Raman scattering. These results validate the PM DFFL as a cost-effective and scalable strategy for high-power, temporally stable laser systems.","PeriodicalId":16144,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Lightwave Technology","volume":"44 17","pages":"7723-7728"},"PeriodicalIF":5.2,"publicationDate":"2026-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148877886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional methods often employ signal multiplexing across different frequency bands to overcome this limitation, which consumes additional frequency resources. To avoid this, we propose a chaotic pulse mismatched compression (CPMC) scheme for Φ-OTDR. By exploiting the quasi-orthogonality of chaotic pulses, the method prevents demodulation failure caused by the time-frequency coherent overlap of adjacent Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signals, breaks the sensing bandwidth limitation imposed by fiber length, and suppresses the generation of spurious phases induced by the noise floor after pulse compression. As a result, the sensing bandwidth is enhanced without requiring complex system configurations or additional frequency resources, thereby meeting the requirements of most engineering applications.","PeriodicalId":16144,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Lightwave Technology","volume":"44 17","pages":"7764-7773"},"PeriodicalIF":5.2,"publicationDate":"2026-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148877888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we demonstrate a microfluidic HMBR sensor based on the photothermal effect, capable of high-sensitivity flow rate detection and liquid identification. The principle is the thermal bistability response varying with flow rate and type of internal liquid, which modulate thermal conductivity. Theoretically, the dependence of HMBR thermal conductivity on thermal bistability response is verified, and the influence of flow rate and liquid type on thermal conductivity are simulated. Experimentally, a maximum flow rate sensitivity of -23.543 pm/(μL/min) is obtained even at a low pump power of 10 mW, and identification of liquid type is achieved by analyzing the spectral variations with flow rate. Furthermore, demodulation of these two properties is realized by employing optical barcode method to monitor spectral multimode variations simultaneously. However, existing externally Ag-coated HWG-based acetonitrile (CH3CN) sensors are fundamentally limited by inherent structural bottlenecks, restricting their detection limit to 10 ppb and hindering practical field deployment. To address this critical challenge, we develop a low-loss, highly flexible PP/Ag-coated HWG, and demonstrate its capability to push room-temperature CH3CN sensing to the 100 ppt-level. Targeting the characteristic absorption peak of CH3CN at 275.6 GHz, we optimize the dual-wavelength ultraviolet activation and silver-plating processes, enabling the fabrication of 200 cm-long HWGs with a low transmission loss of 0.96 dB/m. Systematic experimental investigations across 50∼200 cm waveguide lengths and 10∼20 cm bending radii identify the optimal configuration: a 150 cm HWG coiled at a 20 cm radius. The optimized sensor achieves a record LOD of 100 ppt for CH3CN, with a high sensitivity of 0.0134 dB/ppb, ultrafast response/recovery times of 3.5/4.0 s, excellent selectivity against 8 common interfering gases, robust thermal stability from −78.5 to 60 °C, and long-term reliability.
