The intensity increase of the spectral bands in the region of 3000-2850 cm-1 provided information about the increase of the lipophilic environment, which supported the formation of aggregates and amyloid protein formation. The appearance and the intensity increase of the \"marker band\" at 1744 cm-1 suggested protein peroxidation and inflammation progression. The shift of the amide I and amide II absorption bands from 1650 cm-1 and 1550 cm-1, respectively, to lower frequencies was related to changes of collagen conformation structure from α-helix to β-sheet and random coil. The appearance and shifts of the new bands in the region 1200-900 cm-1 were related with the increasing of glycosylation upon inflammation. Important was also the disappearance of the hydroxyapatite vPO43- absorption bands at the spectral regions 1200-900 cm-1 and 550-650 cm-1 indicated the osteolysis development. Moreover, the formation of corrosive metallic implants confirmed the effect of oxidative stress on the development of periprosthetic joint infection.</p>","PeriodicalId":16125,"journal":{"name":"Journal of long-term effects of medical implants","volume":"32 3","pages":"57-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40716830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Records from all patients who received dental implants between January 2013 and December 2014 at ILAPEO College were fully evaluated by two graduate dentists. Records with incomplete or unclear data were excluded from the study. The variables evaluated were demographic data, design of implants and prosthetic components, type of loading, data related to the patients' general health, and survival of implants and prostheses. The final retrospective sample comprised 776 patients with 2707 implants, with up to 5 years of follow-up. Survival rates of implants and prostheses were 97.93% and 98.77%, respectively. Implants with hydrophobic (97.87%) and hydrophilic (98.34%) surfaces exhibited similar survival rates. Considering the different types of loading, there was no statistically significant difference between loading protocols regarding implant survival rates. Unsuitable healing capacity, uncooperative and not motivated patient, loss of prosthesis, and peri-implant bone loss were confirmed statistically to be factors that may contribute to implant loss, according to hazard ratio and odds ratio. The present study showed similar and high overall survival rates for implant with both types of surfaces, in the long term. The surface treatment, implant model and loading protocol had no significant influence on implant loss. Therefore, the evaluated implant systems were able to offer a high predictability for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic implants.","PeriodicalId":16125,"journal":{"name":"Journal of long-term effects of medical implants","volume":"32 1 1","pages":"65-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67610666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A retrospective analysis was conducted in Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. One hundred (50 male and 50 female) CBCT images that included the maxilla of patients aged 18-65 years were selected at random from the archives of the Oral Implantology Department, which were taken in the period from December 1, 2019 to November 30, 2020. Two examiners assessed all the scans with special training to identify this structure. The CBCTs were examined carefully for the presence of accessory canals and the side of occurrence, gender, relation in proximity to the anterior teeth (central incisors to the first premolar). The diameter of the canal was also noted as either less than 1 mm or greater than 1 mm. Our study showed that accessory canals of the canalis sinuous were identified in a total of 18 patients (4 female, 14 male). This shows that in our study, the prevalence of this structure amongst male patients was 14% and for female patients, it was 4%. This study shows that although the accessory canals of the canalis sinuous in the site of endosseous implant placement are rare, it must not be taken lightly because its occurrence still poses a significant risk of iatrogenic nerve damage, especially during implant placement procedures. In some individuals, the terminal branches of this canal or its accessory canals can sometimes be present in the site of placement of endosseous implants placed in the anterior maxilla. Lack of knowledge and awareness of this structure and the fact that its occurrence is often overlooked due to its rare occurrence causes the potential for iatrogenic damage to the nerve resulting in complications.","PeriodicalId":16125,"journal":{"name":"Journal of long-term effects of medical implants","volume":"32 2 1","pages":"45-50"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67611362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pain, which was described by Rene Descartes in the sixteenth century, has been defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage or described in terms of such damage. Various dental procedures also provoke a perception of anxiety that culminates with pain and exaggerates the perception of pain. Hence, adequate pain control and assurance are of utmost importance during and following implant surgery. AIM The aim of the present study was to assess the analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs preferred following implant placement and also to find an association between gender, age, and various analgesics/anti-inflammatories prescribed following implant surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective data collection was conducted from June 2019 to March 2020 among 200 patients who underwent implant surgery, based on records management system software to analyze the most commonly prescribed analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs following implant surgery. RESULTS Among 200 patients the frequency distribution showed that 87% of the patients were prescribed with combination of Aceclofenac (100 mg), Paracetamol (325 mg), and Serratiopeptidase (15 mg), 10% of the patients were prescribed with Paracetamol (650 mg), whereas 3% of the patients were prescribed with Piroxicam (20 mg). CONCLUSION The present study showed that combination of Aceclofenac, Paracetamol, and Serratiopeptidase was the commonly prescribed analgesic/anti-inflammatory drug for postoperative pain management following implant placement. Also there was no significant association between gender vs. various analgesics/anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed following implant placement.","PeriodicalId":16125,"journal":{"name":"Journal of long-term effects of medical implants","volume":"32 1 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67610353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Posterior maxilla often has insufficient bone quality and quantity; for this reason it makes implant placement challenging in the site. Posterior edentulous maxilla presents special challenges to implant surgeons that are unique to this region compared to other regions of the maxilla. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the common implant dimensions used in posterior maxilla. Completed case sheets were collected from a private dental hospital software system. Case sheets were taken from June 2019 to March 2020. Data was retrieved and evaluated by two reviewers. The parameters taken were patients, age groups, gender, teeth indicated for implants (maxillary premolars and molars), implant height, and implant width. Two-hundred fifty-four implants have been placed on the posterior maxilla of which 139 were premolars and 115 were molars. There was no statistical significance between the implants placed in both males and females (p value: 0.274). Between the age groups, the highest number of implants was seen in 41-60 years (n = 146) followed by 17-40 years (n = 78) and finally > 61 years (n = 30). The p value was 0.000, which was statistically significant. Various implant sizes for posterior maxilla have been introduced due to its challenging site. Thus in our study, we can see there is a difference in sizes for premolars and molars. Implant dimensions with increased height are used in the premolars compared to the molars. Implant dimensions with increased width are used in the molars compared to the premolars. In general, implant width and implant height can range from 3.6 to 4.5 mm and implant height ranging from 9.50 to 12.00 mm.","PeriodicalId":16125,"journal":{"name":"Journal of long-term effects of medical implants","volume":"32 1 1","pages":"25-32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67610420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
