This research examines the prevalence of the disease in relation to general epidemiological variables like age, sex, religion, occupation, seasonal variation including its frequency of clinical variants and association of other skin and systemic diseases. Methods: 100 cases with MC were selected irrespective of age, sex, socioeconomic status of the first 100 patients attending out patient department of the Department of Dermatology STD and Leprosy K.L.E. Society’s Hospital and Medical Research Center and District Hospital Belgaum during the study period of 13 months from 1 September 1995 to 30 September 1996. Clinical examination was done to study the distribution, morphology and umbilication of the lesions. Results: The prevalence of MC was 0.64%. 62% patients belonged to ages 11 to 30 years. Male to Female ratio was 1.6: 1 Hindus (73%) were found to be more involved than Muslims (27%). The prevalence of MC was common among students and housewives (74%), followed by unskilled workers (30.7%), agriculturists and businessmen (26.9%) each and unskilled workers (4%). Conclusion: MC occurred mainly in unskilled workers and was most common in the age group of 21 to 30 (37%).","PeriodicalId":161194,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Dermatology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125872834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sensitivities were recorded after 48 & 96 hours. 83/3900(2.13%) patches in 53/300(17.67%) individuals tested positive. Incidence of reactivity was seen in the descending order as: Neosporin (16.67%)a Soframycin (3.33%)aFuracin (3.33%)aEnsamycin (3.33%)aSilversulfadiazine (2%)aEryacne (2%)aMetronidazole (2%)aDettol (1.33%)aBetadine(1.0%)aClindacA gel(0.67%)aMupirax ointment(0.33%)aFucidin ointment(0%). Majority of cases i.e. 32/53(60.38%) tested positive to only one antibacterial,15/53(28.30%) cases showed sensitivity to two antibacterials, 4/53(7.55%) cases showed sensitivity to three antibacterials and 1/53(1.89%) case each showed sensitivity to four & five topical antibacterials respectively. Cross sensitivity was also observed among Neosporin, Soframycin & Ensamycin. Indigenously designed Finn chamber used in this study proved to be handy , time saving, economical & ideal. Neosporin(Neomycin) was the commonest sensitiser while Fucidin (Fusidic acid) & Mupirax (Mupirocin)were least sensitizing. The last two antibacterials can be safely recommended for topical usage.","PeriodicalId":161194,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Dermatology","volume":"53 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123440318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of this study is to estimate the plasma levels of D-dimer in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria, to assess its possible role in CIU and to correlate such levels with the disease severity.Methods: Twenty patients with CIU; ten with urticaria of known cause and ten apparently healthy subjects matched for age and sex were included in this study. Plasma Ddimer was estimated for all groups while in the acute attack and after remission of symptoms.Results: Plasma D-dimer was significantly elevated in CIU patients , it was also significantly elevated in patients with CU of known cause with no significant difference between the two groups. Higher levels of D-dimer were detected in relation to the severity of urticaria that a highly significant difference was detected between severe and mild cases. D-dimer plasma levels after complete remission of symptoms show a dramatic drop which was significantly higher during the acute exacerbation of the disease.Conclusions: Plasma D-dimer could be a useful marker of disease severity and activity in CU patients.","PeriodicalId":161194,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Dermatology","volume":"96 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127991844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
