In this step, the researcher had a direct conversation with the informants who were guided with the list of conversation, then recorded it. The data were then sorted out using computer software PRAAT and were later analyzed. The results of data analysis show that all intonation contours produced by Japanese informants have the same characteristics, which are the intonation of the utterance focus or the most important part of an utterance rises, while the intonation of another utterance that is not the focus or after the focus falls. In general, the intonation of an utterance has one curve, but the existence of utterance focus can result in the change of intonation. The number of focus in an utterance can cause the emergence of several curves. In order to produce intonation that sounds natural or similar to the native speakers, learners must understand about the intonation contours in Japanese, especially the intonation of the utterance focus.","PeriodicalId":159474,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal KATA","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116704829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the expressions in the textbook occur in isolation, it does not give sufficient context in which the expressions occur. For instance, there are no strategies that the speakers use to make the hearers understand their questions. According to Relevance theory, the speakers tried to give relevant input to the hearers in order to obtain the goal of communication (Wilson & Sperber, 2008). Therefore, the present study analyzed expressions of asking opinions in BNC to provide what strategies the speakers use in order to make the questions relevant for the hearers. A corpus-assisted discourse study was conducted to find the strategies. The strategies were analyzed on the light of Relevance theory. It was found that some expressions were not found in BNC. The speakers applied several strategies namely introducing, asking more questions, giving options, and elaborating.  They provide relevant information when asking questions. When the speakers did not get hearers’ opinions, they tried to give more information or options to elicit hearers’ responses. ","PeriodicalId":159474,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal KATA","volume":"66 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132871382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of the story using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) reveals the meaning and ideology which the writer expresses through the work. In the ideational metafunction, the story uses the material and relational processes the most. The use of the two processes presents the grandmother and her character vividly and clearly. In the interpersonal metafunction, the sentences mostly use grandmother, she, and other objects related to her as the subject. The use shows how meaningful the grandmother to her granddaugher, the narrator, is. Furthermore, the change of the tense also indicates the significant transformation of the grandmother. Finally, in the textual metafunction, though low, the use of marked themes emphasizes the life phases of the grandmother. The analysis of the text using SFG reveals the centrality of life and death in the story. The analysis of the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of the text reveals well the meaning and ideology which the story conveys. Death is only a transform of a life to another life.","PeriodicalId":159474,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal KATA","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130884687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
