The study employs the life-cycle cost to estimate a 25-year life-time cost of an off-grid electrification project using solar photovoltaic panels and compares with the cost of paying for grid-electricity within the same period. Comparing the cost of off-grid electrification with grid-extension is more appropriate; however, data on the cost of grid extension in Northern Nigeria are scarce. Thus, electricity tariff is used as a proxy since the Nigerian electricity market has been deregulated and the electricity tariff is expected to be market-reflective. The result shows that such project will not be economically viable at the prevailing commercial lending rate as it yields a negative net present value. However, the project becomes viable with adequate government support through the reduction in commercial lending rate for such projects and provision of start-up grants (as production subsidy). Such subsidy will not result in economic waste since the target is clearly defined. Apart from government financial incentives, creating necessary support mechanism in terms of legal and regulatory frameworks to encourage private investment will be necessary. In addition, engaging the community in the construction and maintenance of the project will ensure sustainability.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128355273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Countries like Japan with high per-capita income and high-density residential complexes remain at the forefront of FTTH and WDM-PON developments. The majority of African countries face unique socio-economic challenges, along with sprawling population distributions. As such, there is a need to develop network technologies, network architectures and business models applicable to the African case. In this presentation we discuss these issues and present potential solutions. We further show our experimental results of how low-cost Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are suited to long-reach 4.25 Gbps access networks in the African context. This work is part of a new and exciting project “Fibre-to-the-Hut: Researching Novel FTTH Solutions for Africa”, currently being launched by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132085392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was done in the particular context of a developing country and of supply to multiple vehicle manufacturers (OEMs). Decision factor constructs for automotive suppliers to locate in automotive supplier parks were identified from literature, but in the context of developed countries and of supply to a single OEM. A comprehensive construct from literature was tested with suppliers located in the first automotive supplier park (ASP) in South Africa to establish to which extent their decision factors corresponded to those of their counterparts in developed countries. The research design was that of an exploratory case study. It was found that the decision factors from literature were applicable and sufficient for the developing country multiple-OEM context but that the context caused distinct differences in the logistics service provider structure of the park tenants and the ranking of decision factors to locate in the park.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133416442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the tedious nature of processing clear-air meteorological data, and the cost involved in launching radiosondes, two interpolation techniques have been employed in extending the k-factor statistics obtained to cover the whole of South Africa. A comparison of the interpolation methods is drawn by using the Mean Absolute Error and Root Mean Square Error criteria and then the interpolated and gridded values are presented in contour maps.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132038456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method the determination of the available data transmission rates is performed by fuzzy inference systems. The telecommunications environment and the physical parameters that influence the transmission are briefly reviewed. Two methods used for the creation of the rule bases and an easy way for the evaluation for the observations of the physical system are presented.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125600181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Africa and Nigeria in particular, the production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil will also serve to eliminate or at least reduce a looming potential health risk associated with the consumption of over used cooking oil among the populace particularly those working in hotels, restaurants, eateries, etc and their families. Biodiesel is an alternative diesel fuel produced from a catalyzed reaction of the triglycerides in the oil or fat with a simple monohydric alcohol (methanol). The thrust of this work is the design and building of a compact table-top chemical reactor for carrying out trans-esterification of used cooking oil for the production of biodiesel. We first designed a special filter used to filter the used vegetable oil. The filter was made of activated carbon felt material, having an equivalent surface area of 1300m2/g. Subsequently, we developed a process to produce biodiesel from a compact chemical reactor plant with a control system using temperature sensors and an adjustable speed electric drive. Detailed operating conditions and equipment design for the process were obtained and analysis of the characteristic properties of our product was carried out to evaluate the technical and economic benefits, including environmental effects. Our analysis showed that the biodiesel we produced using waste cooking oil (used vegetable oil) met with international standards such as ASTM D 6751-07b. The cost of our pilot-scale produced biodiesel was $0.52/litre, which is about half the price of petroleum diesel in the Nigerian market. Thus, biodiesel from waste cooking oil proved to be technically and economically feasible and can be a competitive alternative to the highly priced petroleum diesel.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133875478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This framework is to check and confirm that the trajectories and events of DEVS-Driven Modeling Language (DDML) simulation models and that of the real system agree in order to achieve replicative, predictive and structural validity through the lightweight application of formal methods. This is to reduce and ease the Simulation model verification efforts while increasing the coverage of the process, in order to verify the transformational accuracy of the model development process, increase confidence in the simulation model and allow for performance evaluation of simulation models. This framework provides a model refinement iterative procedure that helps to enhance the DEVS Simulation Model, correct errors or adapt to changing contextual requirements. This refinement procedure is applicable to evolutionary software development and systems requiring rapid prototyping, in order to meet up with changing requirements of such systems with the aid of iterative refinement. Furthermore, we present a case study example of a GSM telecommunication system to reveal the ability of this framework to not only formally verify system but also refine their models.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122436789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The automation system is increasingly not only the platform for control algorithms but also for planning and scheduling solutions. Because of the importance and relevance of automation systems for instrument and control engineers, it is highly beneficial that students and industry professionals alike get exposure to automation systems in a safe and accessible laboratory environment. This paper investigates the construction of a model discrete manufacturing plant, built with Fischertechnik model stations, and using ABB's Freelance AC800F industrial automation software. The aim is to create an automation environment which can be utilized for discrete manufacturing planning and scheduling research, software development as well as demonstration for educational purposes.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124059766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article extends the idea of [1] that designs transmit symbols such that they are orthogonal at the output of such a channel. Knowledge of the channel coefficient's auto-correlation function is assumed at the transmitter and at the receiver. We show a concrete and numerically stable algorithmic implementation that designs higher order modulations, while being able to handle larger time variances. A new algorithm is proposed that designs signals under a given bandwidth constraint. Algorithm initialization and convergence speed are improved. Bit error rate simulations show superior performance to classical incoherent orthogonal FSK transmission, and that the new transmission scheme is relatively robust against design or estimation errors regarding the channel's maximum Doppler frequency.","PeriodicalId":159306,"journal":{"name":"2013 Africon","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128580715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
