The automation system is increasingly not only the platform for control algorithms but also for planning and scheduling solutions. Because of the importance and relevance of automation systems for instrument and control engineers, it is highly beneficial that students and industry professionals alike get exposure to automation systems in a safe and accessible laboratory environment. This paper investigates the construction of a model discrete manufacturing plant, built with Fischertechnik model stations, and using ABB's Freelance AC800F industrial automation software.
