Personalization is concerned with building a closer relationship and understanding the needs of individuals or groups of customers, whether on the Internet or not. IDC Corp. forecasts a 212% annual average growth in personalization applications over the next decade. This minitrack includes all aspects of the personalization management systems life cycle, including technologies and development. This would include the conceptualization of personalization management systems and their associated constructs, proposed designs and infrastructures, empirical validation of personalization models, and case studies illustrating personalization success and failures. Some key topics include (1) building customer relationships, (2) gathering and analyzing transaction data, and (3) customer/employee education and learning systems.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. This paper studies the seriousness of the negative impact that free riding can have in a P2P file sharing system. We introduce the concept of utility function to measure the usefulness of peers to the system as a whole, and describe a scheme based on this concept to control free riding. A simple utility function is described to illustrate the scheme. We design and develop a simulation model to study various patterns of sharing behaviors among the peers in a file sharing community and their impact on the system. A set of experimental results is reported. The experiments indicate that the utility based free riding control can increase the lifetime of the system by 10 times, even with a simple utility function.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. Project learning occurs when new knowledge is captured, disseminated, and used by the project team. Y2K utility projects were studied with respect to knowledge benefits and management. Projects from developed countries using western technology were found to have knowledge benefits but their organizations were doing a poor job of capturing them. It was hypothesized that the failure to capture knowledge benefits was due to organizations not having an organizational knowledge management strategy. The respondents were surveyed with respect to their organization's knowledge strategy. The number of knowledge benefits and capture actions taken was compared between projects that had a knowledge strategy and those that did not. A significant correlation was found between the dependent variables and knowledge management strategy for those organizations having an organizational strategy both during Y2K and now. No significant correlation was found with those projects that had a strategy either during Y2K or now. Finally, types of capture actions taken were assessed using percent of respondents taking the capture action. Modifying existing processes and procedures was found to occur much more often in projects having a knowledge strategy. The implications are that project-based knowledge management systems, KMS, within organizations can successfully capture and transfer tacit knowledge without capturing context. However, organizations are much more likely to capture knowledge benefits if they have an organizational knowledge management strategy.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. This paper discusses the findings of a longitudinal research program comparing traditional and applications outsourcing methods and practices. Preliminary research has uncovered a mismatch between vendor hype about the benefits of the ASP business model, and customer caution in adopting the solution. Developing a taxonomy of net sourcing approaches, the paper argues that scale, scope and integration are three key areas which must be addressed by vendors in their business plans. With the advent of Web services as an IT architecture, it is suggested applications outsourcing will extend to business processes outsourcing as important challenges relating to scale, scope and integration will be overcome.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. Whereas transaction-oriented marketplaces are characterized by catalogs, auctions or exchanges, and support for negotiated pricing, collaboration marketplaces are characterized by planning capabilities such as continuous planning, forecasting, and replenishment or product life-cycle management. Collaboration marketplaces have different benefits than transaction-oriented marketplaces and different adoption considerations. Therefore, theoretical frameworks such as transaction cost theory, which apply quite well to transaction-oriented marketplaces, provide only a partial explanation of collaboration marketplace adoption. We compare three alternative theoretical perspectives on collaboration marketplaces and discuss their implications for future research.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. Technological innovations and increasing customer demand have led to the emergence of new services and new organizational forms for financial services firms. Willingly or unwillingly, banks are being forced to move toward worldwide operation. This enables them to offer services and credit facilities on a global scale, tailored to customers regardless of where they are based. However, variations among national markets present obstacles as well as opportunities to companies attempting to \"go global.\" This paper describes specific problems and solutions for the globalization of banking services, and a case study carried out on payment services for an international bank to develop system architecture for cross border payment. The proposed architecture aims to keep apart of the processes local, but transfers the core of the transaction operations to a centralized system with clear services and clear interfaces. The bi-directional translation of formats makes standardized processing possible, while output for the specific contexts can be provided in the original formats. An important property of the architecture is that the rich context has been integrated into the handling of transactions.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. This study introduces a new dimension in the process of filtering out unnecessary information: the conformity behavior. Conformity means that people will tend to converge on similar behavior because they are affected by social norms. This study compares the effects of four personalization mechanisms on subjective decision quality. The results show that pure conformity is better than target conformity. Target conformity is no significant different from collaborative filtering. The result could help people re-examine the ideal approach in making personalization systems.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003. While outsourcing is associated with several important benefits, it also entails risk. The main purpose of this study was to validate measures of the risk factors associated with outsourcing IT operations. Insights from transaction costs theory suggest that risk factors are inherent in the transaction itself, the supplier and the client. A survey of 132 senior IT executives was conducted to assess the measures, and reliability and validity assessment was performed using PLS.","PeriodicalId":159242,"journal":{"name":"36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003.
