(2013a,b), we proposed a theory to explain giving behaviour in dictator experiments by a combination of selfishness and a notion of justice. The theory was tested using dictator, social planner, and veil of ignorance experiments. Here we analyse gender differences in preferences for giving and notions of justice in experiments using the same data. Similar to Andreoni and Vesterlund (2001), we find some differences in giving behaviour. We find even stronger differences in the notion of justice between men and women; women tend to be far more egalitarian. Using our preference decomposition approach from Becker et al. (2013a) and parametric estimates, we show that differences in the giving behaviour between men and women in dictator experiments are explained by differences in their notion of justice and not by different levels of selfishness. We employ both parametric and non-parametric techniques, and both methods confirm the result.

In some contexts, these two forms of relatedness interact. Caring about others can conveniently be labeled altruism. Caring about how we fare in comparison with others who fare better than ourselves can conveniently be labeled relative deprivation. I provide examples of domains in which the incorporation of altruism and relative deprivation can point to novel perspectives and suggest rethinking, and possibly revising, long-held views. And I show that there are domains in which consideration of relative deprivation can substitute for the prevalence of altruism, and vice versa. I conclude that this is a fascinating sphere for research on economics and social behavior.

In the first stage, participants are incentivized to complete a compound task consisting of a targeted pro-social activity and a complement activity. In the second stage, participants are incentivized to complete repeatedly only the complement activity. The model predicts that, conditional on compliance with the first-stage compound task, intrinsic interest in the target activity is promoted regardless of compliance with the second-stage task. To test this we design and implement a field experiment on volunteering. The results are consistent with our model. Moreover, in the one year subsequent to our experiment, those who participated in our compound-task mechanism reported volunteering systematically more than those who participated in alternative mechanisms we investigated. Our approach has useful implications for promoting positive individual and social outcomes in many behavioral domains. WTP values for three hypothetical treatments of the demented patient were elicited. The treatment Stabilization prevents the worsening of the disease, bringing dementia to a standstill. Cure restores patient health to its original level. In No burden, dementia takes its normal course while caregiver's burden is reduced to its level before the disease.\u0000\u0000\u0000FINDINGS\u0000The three different types of therapies are reflected in different WTP values of both caregivers and patients, suggesting that moderate levels of Alzheimer's disease still permit clear expression of preference. According to the WTP values found, patients do not rank Cure higher than No burden, implying that their preferences are entirely altruistic. Caregiving spouses rank Cure before Burden, reflecting less than perfect altruism which accounts for some 40 percent of their total WTP. Still, this constitutes evidence of mutual altruism. VALUE: The evidence suggests that WTP values reflect individuals' preferences even in Alzheimer patients. The estimates suggest that an economically successful treatment should provide relief to caregivers, with its curative benefits being of secondary importance.

Yet, both are absolutely necessary to answer fundamental questions – even those that arise in corporate law. Corporate law scholars long have debated whether managers, in making decisions for a corporation, should employ a shareholder wealth maximization norm or a norm that emphasizes social responsibility. That debate continues. Its resolution rests in discovery of the truth about corporate governance. About a decade or so ago, scholars began using the lens of Catholic Social Thought to search for this truth. Since then, two differing schools of thought have emerged. One emphasizes the fundamental importance of human freedom in Catholic Social Thought; the other emphasizes Catholic Social Thought’s long-standing adherence to communitarian principles. In June 2009, Pope Benedict XVI issued Caritas in Veritate, a social encyclical that clearly articulates what Catholic Social Thought requires of corporate governance. This Article considers what Caritas in Veritate offers the debate about the appropriate norm for corporate governance. It begins with a description of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social Thought and a discussion of how modern popes before Pope Benedict XVI have explained those principles in addressing matters important to corporate governance. It then discusses the focus of Caritas in Veritate and its explanation of principles of Catholic Social Thought relevant to corporate governance. The Article then examines how scholars applied Catholic Social Thought to the corporate governance debate before Caritas in Veritate was issued and how Caritas in Veritate informs the debate. Finally, this Article concludes that Caritas in Veritate offers important lessons to those on both sides of the corporate governance debate by stressing that shareholder wealth maximization must be tempered by charity and that corporate social responsibility must be grounded in truth.

The existence of this ostensibly irrational behavior is often linked to other-regarding preferences in humans, which relate a person's decision to her social environment. Economists have begun incorporating other-regarding preferences in their utility frameworks to better capture empirical evidence. While these theoretical additions seem intuitive, their evolutionary foundation is poorly documented and the origin of altruistic punishment remains puzzling. Using a new approach, that closely integrates empirical results from a public goods experiment with punishment together with an evolutionary agent-based simulation model, enables us to identify the underlying key mechanism of this puzzling behavior. We design the agent-based model by means of a limited set of behavioral patterns observed in the experimental data. We validate our results by comparing our quantitative predictions of the punishment behavior and its effect on the level of cooperation with the corresponding empirical observations. Unlike descriptive theories, our approach provides a broad explanatory solution for the emergence and existence of altruistic punishment behavior in public goods game experiments: Altruistic punishment emerges spontaneously from a population of agents who are initially non-punishers, if variants of inequality or inequity aversion are the predominant preference sets. In particular we find, that a weaker, asymmetric variant of inequity aversion quantitatively explains the level of punishment observed in contemporary experiments: Our evolutionary model shows that disadvantageous inequity aversion cause altruistic punishment behavior to evolve to a level that precisely matches the empirical observations in public goods experiments.

Our goal is to verify if current theoretical conjectures actually explain differences in individual contribution behaviour, and to explore other plausible explanations. The presence of many team members discourages contribution, while the number of outsider contributors increase participation.
