Sverstyuk “Cathedral in Scaffolding” as important linguistic means of expressiveness and logic organization of the publicistic text. Studying the category of expressiveness, which is provided by language means, is especially relevant for the study of the journalistic style genres, which perform two main interrelated functions – informing and affecting the reader. The purpose of the research is to analyze stylistic devices in Yevhen Sverstiuk’s essay “Cathedral in Scaffoldingˮ as important linguistic means of the logical and emotionally-expressive organization of the text. The emphasis is laid on the analysis of the figures of speech, most inherent in the intellectual and polemic style of the author’s narrative, namely, antithesis, parcelling, rhetorical questions, inversion, and stylistic devices of repetition (anaphora, epiphora), composite links. Stylistic devices make the text logical and expressive. The logical function of a stylistic device provides information correctness of the text, promotes its division into semantic segments/ fragments. The expressiveness is achieved by mental operations of convergence or opposition of concepts due to skillful changes of the author’s language tactics and results in the enhanced influence on the reader. Ye. Sverstyuk uses stylistic figures to draw the attention of the addressee (by highlighting keywords), to emphasize his point of view and provide the coherence of the discourse.","PeriodicalId":159224,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Linguistics","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132787035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The review of Ukrainian scientists’ papers dealing with studying various aspects of the anthroponymic microsystem “Patronymic surnames”, the problems of their lexicographic processing has been done. The ways of patronymic surname formation from the most widespread masculine Ukrainian variants of Christian names are investigated on large factual material.\u0000\u0000As the analysis proves, the most substantial part of surnames has been formed from the Ukrainian variants of masculine Christian names. The popularity of names both masculine does not influence the productivity of surname formation. Sometimes a less spread name may form much more surnames than a more popular one. The overwhelming majority of surnames derived both from masculine names has been formed by means of suffixation (186 or 88,6 % with 210 surnames), 77 surnames of them with the help of two suffixes (51 surnames or 27,4 % of masculine names). Non-affixal way, i.e. the case when the surname is identical with the name, gave rise to 31 surnames (24 surnames or 12,9 % from masculine names). To derive surnames from masculine names 27 suffixes are used. The most widely used suffixes to produce surnames from masculine names appeared to be suffixes -енк (-єнк) – 22 surnames correspondingly, -ук (-юк) – 20 surnames and -чук (–щук),– 18 surnames. 13 suffixes were used once to form surnames from masculine names: -ин-, -юр-, -ют-, -юш-, -ицьк-, -очк-, -н-, -ун, -аш, -ан, -ай, -ур-, -ник.","PeriodicalId":159224,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Linguistics","volume":"336 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133014983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sentences of desire (optatives) are more appropriately included in the inter-category modifications of sentences-information and prompting sentences. We also proved that among all it is important to single out the content of the sentence-statement, syntactic models of representation of this content, communicative intentions and purpose of the speaker as well as the cognitive environment of sentences-statements.","PeriodicalId":159224,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Linguistics","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117301007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These texts serve the field of actualizing atypical and non-usual narrative structures, the sphere of meaningful changes within the bounds of narrative categories and, which is important, of forming special communicative senses of aesthetic nature. The basic problems of the linguistic analysis of “unnatural” stories are identifying the types of changes in the narration constituents, reasons of these changes and narrative categories (first of all, events, participants, objects, chronotope characteristics, points of view, moduses, modalities, etc.). The article analyses one of the texts of mystical content aiming at the revealing of some specificities of the structure and functioning of the so-called “unnatural artistic narrations”. The object of the research is V. Shevchuk’s novel “The Beginning of Horror”. The subject of the analysis is lingual means of the narrative structure formation, the author’s objectification of the mystical artistic sense and lingual “signals” of a reader’s perception of these senses. The most important semantic means of creating mystical atmosphere of the story are predicates that ascribe the names of their referents atypical dynamic and static features connected with the Christian view of the infernal world. It helps to form narrative events that root in weird situations, which cannot take place in reality. Non-dispositional nature of these situations correlates with the reference to the mystery that goes far beyond the bounds of a usual perceptive and psycho-mental background. Among the pragmatic means of creating mystical atmosphere of the main hero’s story as well as of the novel in general, we specify the individual inimitative perception of the flow of time and modality of “real unreality” formed by the role of an unreliable narrator and a vague point of view of the described event with its perceptive, ideological and time planes of objectification. Due to the increasing interest to various expressions of the esoteric, the increase of the number of artistic works of such content and growth of their popularity, we consider it topical to proceed in further investigations of lingual-narrative aspects of “unnatural” stories, in particular, the ones with the modus of mystical in them.","PeriodicalId":159224,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Linguistics","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115670300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, a general survey of the basic principles and major strands of the grammatical theory is given. The main assumptions include the recognition that all linguistic knowledge is of the same type as knowledge in general and follows the same principles such as categorization, abstraction and generalization. In the second part, the presentation focuses on two important elements of construction grammar research: the concept of the construction as complex sign and the abandoning of the distinction between lexicon and grammar. Using examples from Ukrainian, the different relationships between constructions of different complexity and schematicity in the so-called constructicon – the common space of both lexical and grammatical knowledge – are described. It is shown, how abstract constructions offer slots for other elements and how these are constrained regarding form and meaning. In addition, the status of constructions as complex signs is assessed from the perspective of semantics and compositionality. It is highlighted that Construction Grammar rejects the assumption of compositionality and rather conceptualizes meaning as determined by the construction itself. At the same time, semantics is understood in an encyclopaedic sense, which renders the description of constructions highly detailed and language-specific.","PeriodicalId":159224,"journal":{"name":"Ukrainian Linguistics","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126980593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
