It is designed to satisfy the requirement of real time stability assessment in the wide area power system. Different from conventional approaches the proposed method does not consider the process of system operation by certain parameter values but by the concept of continuity of system operation. The stability margin is defined by discontinuity boundary. This feature can greatly simplify the complicity of defining the stability margin for different cases. In this paper the discontinuity of the maximum swing angle has been studied for the power system TSA. The operation trajectory of the maximum swing angle is obtained via different fault clearing angles. Then the stability condition is determined by the continuity of maximum swing angle. The value of fault clearing angle, which correlated to the intersection of the operational trajectory and the discontinuity boundary, is equal to the critical clearing angle. The synchrophasor has been applied here to provide the initial condition of the disturbance and to obtain the center of inertia with the rotor angle as a reference.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123225344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, interconnect requirements for reactive power, voltage, and ramp rate control and the characteristics of solar power require unique solutions for optimal plant design. To ensure large solar plants can be connected successfully to the grid without impacting grid stability or reliability, the design process must include the development of suitable models of these plants for transient and dynamic simulation. Simulation tools and models can then be used to determine special requirements to deal with issues such as daily plant energization, low voltage ride-through, temporary overvoltage and feeder grounding, etc. The provision of dynamic and static reactive power and the optimization thereof for application at either low, medium, or high voltage and the control issues associated with plant-wide reactive power and voltage control are also key issues in the design. The presentation will focus on the key technical issues and design optimization of large solar power plants.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123363012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This information is needed to size the circuit breakers, to establish the proper system protection, and to choose the transient suppressor in the circuits within the WPP. This task can be challenging to protection engineers due to the topology differences between different types of wind turbine generators (WTGs) and the conventional generating units. This paper investigates the short-circuit behavior of a WPP for different types of wind turbines. The short-circuit behavior will be presented. Both the simplified models and detailed models are used in the simulations and both symmetrical faults and unsymmetrical faults are discussed.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121178936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The numerous and different types of information generated and time synchronized at a distribution network by smart meters, coupled with a communication infrastructure and data base management system provide the means to generate useful control algorithms. Attaching the location of each smart meter at the distribution grid to the monitored data opens the door to numerous advanced applications. Control applications lend themselves for logical stratifications unique to the intended targets of control. Demand response has a rippling effect all the way to generation and also to distribution assets performance. Distribution automation could be local to the distribution network served by a distribution substation. Fast transient phenomena, harmonics problems can be highly local, limited to a particular feeder or at customer premises. The data requirements for each of the control applications mentioned before can be quite different from each other and also depend greatly on the location at the network. This paper tries to illustrate how the physical behavior of the electric energy delivery system dictates the requirements for data generated by the sensing devices to design algorithms for Smart Distribution Grid control applications.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"57 32","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113957502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The procedure of constructing experiment-based simulation model and harmonic monitoring at various points of common coupling (PCCs) in LV network are introduced for analyzing voltage and current harmonic distortion behavior due to attenuation effect. The model is proposed for future microgrid modeling analysis at different PCCs in LV networks. The simulation model was constructed from captured harmonic data and the corresponding LV network topology. The simulation model has been verified by comparing with field measurement results. The VTHD and ITHD relationship curve and the attenuation effect curve for personal computers (PC) have been proposed by using the simulation model. Active distribution network and the so called Smart Grid enabling technologies provide solutions for the transition of distribution networks from the usual, passive fit-and-forget approach. However, there are still some barriers preventing the large scale deployment of such technologies, principally the high implementation costs. Despite this widely accepted barrier, there is still a lack of publicly available information about cost — benefit analyses and appropriate design tools. This paper proposes a simple methodology for the technical and economic evaluation of active distribution network projects. A case study is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology, where technical benefits are quantified in monetary terms in order to conduct a feasibility analysis of the project. The assessment shows that a better understanding of the impacts that such projects bring to distribution networks will push further development of active distribution network technologies.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"313 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113990311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, importance of customer load profile evaluation for detection of illegal consumers is explained in this paper. Classification of the customers based on load profile evaluation using SVMLIB requires us to choose training function and related parameters. Selecting these parameters would consume a lot of time and is not suggestible evaluation of real time electricity consumption patterns, as, the suspicious profiles are to be predicted instantly. In light of this issue, this paper implements a neural network (NN) model and suggests a hierarchical model for enhanced estimation of the classification efficiency, if that data was classified using support vector machines (SVM). In addition, this paper proposes an encoding technique that can identify illegal consumers with better efficiency and faster classification of data.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114749465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new scheme is based on the concept of critical machines and the approach of trajectory analysis. The two design stages focus on the system stability and viability issues respectively. Based on the trajectory analysis technology, different control measures can be combined together to prevent the possible island collapse after splitting. However, in the absence of advance technology to monitor, predict, simulate and control large-scale networks in real time, deterministic standards have historically delivered a successful operation of massive and complex electric networks. However, nowadays through the usage of new technology such as Special Protection Schemes (SPS), coordinated voltage control technique, wide-area monitoring and control systems (WAMC), Dynamic Security Assessment techniques (DSA), grid friendly controllers for Demand Side Management (DSM) etc, there is a genuine possibility to apply a probabilistic framework for network security. A risk-based framework will not only maximise the value of transmission but also speed up the connections of wind power. Through qualitative analyses we point out various problems of the present deterministic standards in the UK together with identifying key benefits at a regulatory and operational level of implementing a probabilistic standard. In addition, through quantitative analyses we show that current deterministic standards significantly overvalue reliability risks and, in fact, a probabilistic cost-benefit framework can lead to important savings in the cost of constraints without significantly increasing the risk of system interruptions.","PeriodicalId":159104,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124492778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
